If it weren't for Soldrin's reminder, Gawain indeed wouldn't have thought about this—although he was aware of the outpost's existence.
In fact, back when the Cecil Clan was still a duchy, Gawain first successfully established contact with the Silver Empire far to the southern end of the continent through this outpost as a relay—this was already a few years ago.
