Chapter 13 - Act 13: Faculty of the Dead [I]

Day: 2

Location: Kirishima High - Clocktower top floor

Time: 6:15 A.M

Remaining time before Night: 11 hours and 45 minutes left

"Then, who would be going to take the key? If I remember correctly, the school bus driver is the only one who has the key. Do we even know if the school bus driver is still alive?" Souichi looked at everyone with a frown.

"There should be a spare key currently being kept inside the faculty room. It is only used in case the key that the bus driver is lost. I don't think it has been used which means we can take advantage of that instead of looking for the school bus driver," Mr. Leo immediately revealed, giving the group a light on their dark situation.

Kyosei grabs his crowbar and is ready to fight. "Then, I will volunteer on this one."

"Wait, isn't it a bit too dangerous to go on this one? Last night, those freaks still lingered around for sure!" Miyuki is complaining and ready to stop Kyosei from partaking the task.

"Which is why we must hurry. With all the ruckus earlier, there is no way those zombies have stayed in one place. They will be scattered all around which is a good time to go and take advantage of the chaos," Souichi also grabs the baseball bat with him.

"I will go as well."

"Let's limit it to two people. Kyosei and Souichi will be taking this task while the rest of us shall hold the fort until they come back. The lesser people who will do this, the less risky the zombies comes around," Mr. Leo then grabs a nail nearby and was about to draw something on the ground when Nanami stops him.

"Sir, if you are planning to do the map, then how about we make use of the virtual map I have created?"

"Virtual map?" Mr. Leo is visibly confused.

Nanami grab her laptop and started typing furiously on the keyboard before she revealed a perfect replica of the hallways of Kirishima High. The model of the school is also close to similar to the real deal.

"Damn, this is perfect..." Mr. Leo grinned as he examined how Nanami navigates on the virtual model of the school.

Mr. Leo drafted the path that the people who will take the school bus key to quickly reach the faculty room where almost all of the keys are currently hanged and kept by teachers, security guards, and utility workers helping to repair tools. Although they don't have the paper, Nanami is currently emulating the school map. She has already made a model of the building interiors of each building of Kirishima High in the past and although she wanted to use it to make a realistic map for finding and noting the best places where the network is strong, that same map is the one they are now using to save their lives.

And thanks to Mr. Leo giving out precise instructions which areas they should head and which areas would be tricky to pass by as well as roads that leads to dead ends, the path to the Faculty Room has been drafted.

"Let's get this matter started," Kyosei geared up and along with Souichi, they will be heading down and head to the Faculty Room.

Day: 2

Location: Kirishima High - Stairway to 3rd Floor

Time: 7:50 A.M

Remaining time before Night: 10 hours and 10 minutes left

Compared to the first day, the hallways are silent. The only remains that the chaos that happened yesterday wasn't a dream are the bloody mess left behind by struggling victims that were preyed by zombies and the dead bodies of zombies.

But this time, the difference of the scenery is quite obvious. Kyosei personally killed a few of those zombies before. They were killed by having their skulls smashed but that's it.

However, right now, those same corpses are now torn apart like it has been ripped apart by other zombies and has been eaten. Kyosei still remembers them as zombies so it doesn't make sense for them to be eaten like so.

"These guys weren't like this before," Kyosei pointed on the other zombies that he also killed. Like the first zombie that he noticed, those other bodies are also torn beyond repair as well.

"Damn, I know that the human body is a bit grotesque inside, but seeing dead bodies torn apart and sprawled out on the floor is still a bit gross," Souichi shows his disgust.

"Better get used to it. If we are indeed experiencing a global zombie apocalypse, then you will know that will not be resolved that easily," Kyosei peers on both sides and gives a signal to Souichi that everything is clear.

The two continue to slowly walk the bloody hallways while making sure their footsteps are quiet. The two are also on high alert, making sure they won't be overwhelmed in case zombies jump forward all of a sudden.

"Still, seeing the busy hallways like this, it's kind of depressing, don't you think?" Souichi looks sad as they walk past the quiet hallway.

"It's always like this especially if classes are ongoing. Doubt it changes anything much, except for the atmosphere," Kyosei said while peering slightly on each door of the classrooms.

Soon, they reached the next staircase to descend. However, Kyosei quickly stopped Souichi from advancing.

"What's wrong?" Souichi frowned.

Kyosei gestured for him to be quiet, pointing out a few zombies on the stairs. They were currently idle, seemingly waiting for their next move and yet their eyes are so vacant that it is clear that they are only moving on instinct now, instead of reason.

"Let me handle this," Kyosei said as he asked Souichi to standby.

"Be careful!" Souichi feel nervous with what Kyosei is about to do.

Kyosei silently stalked the zombie, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When he was close enough, he grabbed the zombie's hair and slammed its head against the floor, crushing it like a melon.

Kyosei's brutal slam shattered Souichi's expectations. How could a regular person's head cave-in like that? The ease with which Kyosei did it was a bit unsettling yet he was also amazed with how easy he did that. Perhaps he can also do it as well? Souichi follows Kyosei as he move towards the next zombie that didn't notice what Kyosei's sneak attack from the previous victim.

Quickly reaching the next zombie, just like the first zombie, he grabs the female zombie's hair in quick motion and tightly grips her scalp before he forcefully slams her head down to the floor. Just like the first zombie, the attack causes her head to burst to pieces, shattering everything to a pulp.

This time, the zombies not too far from the second killed zombie noticed them and immediately started shambling their way towards Kyosei. Before Kyosei can react, Souichi preemptively move and with a powerful kick, he forced the shambling corpses down the stairs, knocking down the other zombie following it.

Souichi quickly moved towards the knocked down zombies and stomped one of them in their head as hard as he could. As soon as he did, the zombie's skull exploded to bits of pieces, shattering it like a melon. Souichi realized why Kyosei is able to do what he did on the previous zombies. The skulls of these zombies are no longer as hard as regular humans. One strong force, and their heads easily shatter.

Realizing this, Souichi move to the next zombie that is about to get up, knocking it down once more, before using his baseball bat to swing hard on the zombie's head, killing it.

Kyosei nodded at Souichi, glancing at his work. "Looks like you're settling in well. Thanks for the assist."

"Of course. We need to watch each other's back if we wanted to escape this place," Souichi nodded as he kick the corpse in his feet on the side.

"Let's get going, zombies tend to be attracted to noises. They'll be heading here shortly. Let's bounce," Kyosei said quickly heading down first.

Souichi nodded. He used to think Kyosei was a heartless delinquent. But now he realizes that Kyosei is just misunderstood. Kyosei might be stoic and emotionless, but he proves his trustworthiness through his actions. And now that an apocalypse is upon them, Kyosei's skills as a delinquent who's used to fighting are more valuable than ever.

Day: 2

Time: 8:20 A.M

Remaining time before Night: 9 hours and 40 minutes left

"Where are they now?" Miyuki asked, looking worried as Nanami is currently monitoring the two boys that are traversing the zombie infested areas.

"They are now nearing the bridge to the left wing. It seems that they are moving at a steady pace," Nanami quickly tapped on her laptop and zoomed a part of the map of the school where a red dot on the virtual map is moving fast.

"Looks like the boys are doing well. Everyone should also energize themselves so that once they return, we are all ready to move. Sleep or eat. The rest who don't want to do that should look around for weapons we can use. We only have a small number of weapons and we can't afford to have a few people who don't have a weapon," Mr. Leo acts as the leader of the group.

"Even me?" Mrs. Haruna frowned while holding her belly.

"Unfortunately, even you Haruna. You won't be on the frontline and actively fighting the zombies, but not every time someone will be able to defend you. It's best to be armed and have a way to fend off those zombies without fighting them rather than being unarmed," Mr. Leo explained.

Miyuki also nodded on Mr. Leo's comment. "He is right. It's best to hold on to something you can swing quickly rather than having nothing."

After hearing the three talk, Nejima and Okabe stood up. "We'll volunteer to find the weapons we need."

"Good. You boys look over on the pile. Anything sharp or blunt and heavy are good weapons, even alternatives like planks and the like. We can't just keep on relying on Kyosei and Souichi to do the fighting."

The boys nodded and started looking for the necessary items they need. Mr. Leo is about to go when Miyuki started asking.

"Mr. Leo, do you think we will be able to escape and go home?"

Mr. Leo sighed and shook his head. "We might be able to get out of here, but going home where every streets are in chaos? Doubt it, we will be lucky enough to even find a way to your home, but I doubt it will be part of the safest areas around here. If even a school that is gated from the outside is even breached with the zombies, I doubt your places are safe."

The others hearing Mr. Leo's words are now looking worried. He noticed it, but he didn't make any effort to calm them down.

"I'm telling you the truth, and it's important to face the facts head-on. Instead of hoping for the best, we should hope that our loved ones at home found safety, shelter, or were able to defend themselves against the zombies. After last night's events, a peaceful night seems unlikely."

Nanami, engrossed in her laptop, added, "I agree. Our immediate concern should be finding a way out of here. Our only chance lies with my brother and Kyosei. If they fail, we'll be trapped here forever, with no hope of rescue, unless someone else will do take the torch and continue what they failed to do."

The group fell into silence. Although they don't doubt the two boys, they are still feeling the fear of the current situation. An actual apocalypse is happening, and with only limited information regarding their situation is also adding dread and fear to their group.

Miyuki turned to look at Nanami. "Nanami, are you able to connect to the internet right now?"

"I do. I am currently downloading videos related to survival since there is a chance we will need to do this in the future. Who knows how long will the internet connection remain up."

Mr. Leo smiled. "Good idea. Useful videos like that might be really useful depending on the situation. You can even use my USB drive if you are running out of storage space. Feel free to delete the files there since I doubt I can still use those now that all of this sh*t is happening all over."

He pulls out the USB drive hanging from his ID and hands it over to Nanami.

"Great! The more storage, the better!" Nanami grinned and continue with her laptop.

Miyuki approaches Nanami. "Can you check the current situation on the internet? I doubt many people didn't post any videos or news regarding this matter."

"I already did. Just that I didn't tell you all guys. After all, the situation is not looking any better even for us," Nanami then opens a new tab, revealing the news regarding the ongoing apocalypse.
