Chapter 113 - Chapter 113: The Spear Given Before the Last Night

Kong Mingyuan did not leave Broken Ravine immediately.

He withdrew to the far side with the Demon Suppression Temple disciples, his prayer beads moving again between his fingers. One bead touched another with a soft sound, calm and measured, as if nothing had happened. Yet the disciples around him no longer looked at Fang Lin with the same clean arrogance as before. Their robes were still white. Their expressions were still restrained. Only their eyes had changed.

That alone was enough.

The smaller sect disciples moved even faster. Broken Cliff Sect carried Wei Zicheng away with pale faces. One disciple hesitated beside the cracked Cliff-Breaking Iron Ruler, then bent down and picked it up carefully. His eyes flicked toward Fang Lin more than once, afraid that the black sword would move again.

Fang Lin saw him take it, but did not stop him.

The ruler had already been damaged. Claiming it in front of so many eyes would only make Broken Cliff Sect's hatred louder while giving him very little in return. Sometimes, leaving a broken thing in another man's hands was more useful than taking it.

Ash Bell Hall retreated with their cracked bell treasures lowered. Red Smoke Ridge pulled its smoke inward until the red haze around them looked less like a method and more like a curtain for frightened faces. The dead Red Smoke Ridge disciple was dragged away by two companions, neither of whom dared to raise their heads.

No one spoke above a low voice.

That silence was better than whispers. It meant the people who wanted to talk had remembered who might hear them.

Feng Jiu'er turned away from Kong Mingyuan and faced the Green Bamboo Alliance disciples. Her white-red robes were stained by dust near the hem, and faint ash clung to one sleeve, but her posture remained straight. The crimson-green warmth around her did not flare wildly. It pressed outward with enough steadiness to remind everyone that she was still the leader here.

"Count the wounded," she said. "No one leaves the group alone. Su Wanqing, keep the Verdant Marrow Cleansing Bead sealed and storage treasure hidden. Li Shan, check the left passage but do not go beyond sight. Luo Chen, sit down before that spear in your hand breaks and takes your patience with it. Han Zhi, let someone bind your shoulder properly. Bai Qing, stop circulating Qi for now."

Her gaze moved to Zhao Feng.

Zhao Feng straightened despite his wounded palm. "Senior Sister Feng?"

"Carry stones."

His face stiffened. "Carry stones?"

"Yes. If you still have strength to ask questions, you can help make a barrier."

Murong Yue leaned against a broken stone wall and pressed one hand against her waist. Her face was pale, but her eyes still carried that familiar sharpness. "Senior Sister Feng is merciful. If it were me, I would ask him to carry Wei Zicheng too."

Zhao Feng looked toward Wei Zicheng's distant, half-conscious figure and immediately picked up a stone and said shamelessly. "The barrier is very important."

Luo Chen's mouth twitched once before he forced his expression back into seriousness. Bai Qing lowered her head, but her shoulders moved slightly. Han Zhi gave Zhao Feng a calm look that somehow made Zhao Feng carry the next stone faster.

The Alliance disciples immediately got to work.

It was not neat at first. Some had sword wounds. Some had bruised backs or twisted ankles. One disciple's left ear still bled from the Ash-Sealing Bronze Bell's sound pressure. Another had taken a smoke needle through the forearm and had to grit his teeth while Su Wanqing pulled the thin red needle out with a strip of cloth wrapped around her fingers.

Fang Lin watched the injuries carefully. None were instantly fatal, but several were serious enough to become problems if another fight broke out before they recovered. The outer region of the Rivercloud Demon Sealing Ruins had already shown enough cruelty. The last stretch before the expected fifteenth-day ejection would not become safer just because people were tired.

He took out a jade bottle and tossed it to Su Wanqing. "Six Clear Meridian Recovery Pills. Use them on those with disturbed Qi or meridian strain."

Su Wanqing caught the bottle and looked at him in surprise. "Fellow Daoist Shen, these pills are valuable."

"They are less valuable than people who can still stand in formation."

She was quiet for a breath, then nodded. "I will record this debt."

"Record it after you survive."

Fang Lin then took out a smaller bottle and placed it in Li Shan's hand. "Two Bone-Mending Pills. One for Han Zhi if the shoulder bone is cracked. One for Zhao Feng's palm if the joint is damaged."

Zhao Feng looked up from the stones with shining eyes. "Senior Brother Shen, I suddenly feel that carrying stones is beneath my talent."

Feng Jiu'er looked at him.

Zhao Feng coughed and lifted another stone. "But my talent is willing to suffer."

Murong Yue closed her eyes for a moment, as if enduring pain. "His talent talks too much."

The pills were quickly divided. Su Wanqing moved with practiced calm, checking injuries and giving orders to the younger Alliance disciples. Li Shan used cloth torn from his own sleeve to bind another disciple's leg before treating his own forearm. Han Zhi accepted help only after Bai Qing quietly stood beside him with the pill bottle in her hand and refused to move. He looked at her, then sat down without a word.

Luo Chen remained a little apart from the others.

His old spear lay across his knees. A long crack ran down the shaft, and the metal head had bent slightly from blocking too many heavy strikes. He had tried to mend it with Qi, but each time his spiritual energy entered the weapon, the crack trembled wider. The spear had not completely broken, yet everyone could see it would not survive another hard battle.

Fang Lin made his way over.

Luo Chen raised his head. "Fellow Daoist Shen."

Fang Lin looked at the damaged spear. "It is finished."

Luo Chen's fingers tightened around the shaft. For a spear cultivator, hearing that was not pleasant. Still, he did not argue. "It protected me long enough."

"That is already more than many weapons manage."

Fang Lin reached into his storage treasure.

When the Battle-Scar Spear appeared, the air around Luo Chen changed.

The spear was long and heavy, black-red from shaft to head, with faint battle scars running across it like old wounds that had never healed. Its spearhead was dark iron, narrow and cruel, with a dull red line through the center. It did not shine. It had the weight of something that had stood in an arena and waited for challengers to die against it. When Fang Lin set its butt against the ground, the stone beneath it gave a low sound.

Several nearby Alliance disciples looked over at once.

Even Feng Jiu'er looked over.

Zhao Feng's stone nearly slipped from his arms. "That spear looks angry."

Murong Yue's eyes curved. "Then it suits Luo Chen. He is also angry, just very politely."

Luo Chen slowly rose to his feet. His gaze did not leave the spear. "This..."

"Take it," Fang Lin said.

Luo Chen did not reach out. "This is too precious."

"I do not use spears."

"You could sell it."

"I could also keep watching you block attacks with a weapon that is already dying."

Luo Chen's expression changed. He lowered his eyes toward his old spear, then looked back at the Battle-Scar Spear. For a moment, his face showed the struggle clearly. He wanted it. Any spear cultivator with blood still warm in his veins would want it. But wanting and accepting were not the same thing.

Fang Lin lifted the Battle-Scar Spear and threw it toward him.

Luo Chen caught it with both hands. The weight forced his arms downward, and his feet sank half an inch into the broken stone. A faint battle intent pushed against his Qi, making his shoulders tense. Instead of letting go, Luo Chen adjusted his grip and stood straighter.

The spear hummed once, low and unwilling.

Fang Lin's eyes showed a faint trace of approval. "Good. It does not like weak hands."

Luo Chen held the spear across both palms and bowed deeply. "I will not disgrace it."

"Disgrace yourself first if you must. The spear can wait."

Zhao Feng stared. "Senior Brother Shen, was that encouragement?"

Murong Yue answered before Fang Lin could. "For him, probably."

Luo Chen did not smile, but the grip of his fingers around the spear became steadier. The old cracked weapon was placed beside him, no longer held like a lifeline. Some things did not need farewell. They only needed to be remembered properly before being set down.

Feng Jiu'er walked to Fang Lin's side after Luo Chen began adjusting to the spear's weight. Her gaze lingered briefly on the weapon, then moved to Fang Lin's face. The shallow cut near his brow had almost closed, but not so quickly that it would frighten sharp eyes. He had controlled even that.

"You give away a Superior Spirit Foundation weapon as if it were an ordinary spear," she said.

Fang Lin looked at Luo Chen. "It is ordinary in my hands."

"And in his?"

"That depends on whether he can make it less ordinary."

Feng Jiu'er remained silent for a moment. The warmth of her fire aura had faded until only a faint heat remained near her sleeve. "You are dangerous when you fight, Fellow Daoist Shen."

"Only then?"

Her eyes shifted toward him. There was still dust on her cheek, and the faint red at the edge of her robes made her look colder than before, but the corner of her lips moved slightly. "You are also dangerous when you give gifts. People may misunderstand."

Fang Lin glanced at her. "What would you misunderstand?"

"That you are soft-hearted." said Feng Jiu'er

"That would be a serious misunderstanding."

"Good." Feng Jiu'er looked away first. "I would hate to owe favors to a soft-hearted man."

Fang Lin's smile was faint enough that only she could see it. "Then you can owe one to a dangerous one."

Her fingers paused on the hilt of her sword for half a breath. Then she turned back toward the Alliance disciples as if nothing had happened. "Rest for one hour. After that, we change positions and prepare for the night."

Behind them, Murong Yue had somehow opened her eyes at the perfect time. She looked from Feng Jiu'er to Fang Lin, then wisely lowered her head and focused on tying the cloth around her waist. The smile she hid was sharper than the dagger at her sleeve.

The next hour passed in careful silence.

The Alliance disciples formed a small defensive area against the broken ravine wall. Zhao Feng and two others stacked stones into a low barrier. Li Shan marked the safest retreat path with shallow sword cuts on the ground. Han Zhi and Bai Qing guarded Su Wanqing while she kept the Verdant Marrow Cleansing Bead sealed inside storage. Luo Chen sat near the outer edge, both hands on the Battle-Scar Spear, letting his Qi touch it little by little instead of forcing submission.

In the distance, Demon Suppression Temple remained quiet.

Too quiet, perhaps.

Kong Mingyuan did not come forward again. He spoke softly with two disciples beside him, and from time to time, his gaze crossed the ravine toward Su Wanqing's position. He did not need to say anything for Fang Lin to understand. The Verdant Marrow Cleansing Bead had not stopped tempting him. He had only decided that tonight, under these eyes, was not the right moment. That item was extremely useful in places like this.

Fang Lin remembered that.

He also remembered Chen Yueshan's silence, Chen Hao's cold laughter from before, and the way the Faction side had watched Alliance disciples bleed without moving. Those debts were not loud, but quiet debts often lasted longer.

Above Broken Ravine, the sky inside the Rivercloud Demon Sealing Ruins was dark and heavy. No stars shone there. Only slow grey cracks moved behind the clouds, appearing and fading like veins beneath dead skin. Some cultivators in the ravine looked upward from time to time, as if trying to judge how long remained before the fifteenth day. Others refused to look at all.

Hope was a strange thing within ruins.

The more people held it, the more afraid they became of hearing it break.

Fang Lin sat with Night Burial Sword across his knees. His divine sense remained restrained, moving only in thin threads around the Alliance's defensive area. He did not scan too far. There were too many cultivators, too many treasures, and too many old formations buried in the ravine. Carelessness with the soul was no different from shouting one's name in a den of enemies.

Beside the sealed quiet of the night, the black marks on some cultivators remained hidden beneath sleeves.

No one understood their meaning.

No one spoke of them for long.

And beneath the stone of the Rivercloud Demon Sealing Ruins, the ancient silence continued without giving an answer.
