Mathematics is essentially what's supposed to be a universal language, however, it's often complex to the point that even mathematicians have trouble understanding it. If something takes hundreds of pages to prove, how many people will have the time, energy and knowledge to understand as well as correct any potential mistakes or oversights?
The few who are knowledgeable enough to do so, are almost certainly constantly busy.
