Whether or not a human dies is entirely dependent on if it would be interesting. A human can die by simple tripping, whilst sometimes being able to survive falling out of a plane without a parachute. That's how the concept of plot armor came to be. In most cases, it would be bad plotwise if the main character were to die. Thus, the universe will bend its rules to keep them alive.
