Chapter 52 - Array Specialist License Exam (2)

After completing the C-grade arrays, Luca turned to face the three Array Specialists with a slightly aggrieved expression, "I can make a B-grade array too, but I am currently unable to alter their designs. The designs are more advanced and complex compared to magecraft and alchemy ones, so I can't alter them until I improve. So far, C-grade is as far as I've gone with alterations."

Grandmaster Athers had to wet his mouth before speaking due to his mouth being open for a very long time, "If you'd managed to alter B-grade designs by now, all three of us Array Specialists might as well retire on the spot."

"Please don't, the Head Guildmaster is already going to cane me later. I've already caused Grandmasters Runette and Edgewick to give her headaches. Adding you on top of them, I might not be able to leave my mock duel on my own feet." The young Dragonborn genuinely begged the seniormost Array Specialist, even if it was fruitless to some extent. "Now I'm going to attempt to make my first B-grade array," said the boy as he cleared the simulated environment of his previously built arrays.

After reviewing his archived knowledge of B-grade designs, Luca eventually settled on an especially potent territory-type supportive design named as the Solar Corona Array. Due to its complexity, which was eventually scaled down very precisely with the assistance of the Dwarves and the two Light-side Elven races, this array was considered rare in its complete form. Smaller, downgraded versions of it were made over time, but the original remains the most horrifying. As a combination of the elements of Light and Flame, the array would absorb the heat and light energy that sunlight carried when left uncontrolled, meaning it was always absorbing energy. When unleashed, even on its lowest output, the stored solar power would be converted into a pillar that would pierce high into the sky before, at its peak, expanding outward into an enormous dome. As it was designed specifically to target the Undead, though it did not have the Holy/Divine element in its repertoire, the overwhelming concentration of Light and Fire energy was responsible for several things. Dark-side races all suffered a 20% stat debuff within its range, with the Undead being weakened by between 25-50% depending on their level or abilities. In addition, the Light power would constantly batter away at their magic shields so the Fire energy could slip through a crack and inflict a [Burning] debuff on its target, which grew worse the longer the target remained inside the array. These effects would increase or decrease based on the output of the array, with the maximum output having been proven to disintegrate any Undead unfortunate enough to come into contact with it.

Luca knew that he would not be able to simulate the array's full prowess due to its need to store solar power over time; not even the simulation could void this necessary process. As such, he simply put it together as it was designed: 81 formation flags made of numerous precious materials distributed into 3 layers in a circular setup, a special magic metal made by the Dwarves to conduct both heat and light to form the array's lines in order to connect the flags properly, and 5 pillars of the same special magic metal, four in a square placed around the taller fifth in the centre of the array. The solar energy would be absorbed by the outermost flags before following the metal lines to the middle layer, where the flags would store it until it reached a certain density of about 200%. Upon reaching that targeted limit, the charged energy would follow more metal lines to the inner layer, where the flags would again store and charge it until it quintupled in density. With 24 of the 27 inner layer flags separated into four quadrants, the four separate parts would send their quintuple density energy to their respective pillars, with the remaining three set aside as emergency support. The four pillars would imbue about 10% of their total energy capacity, which theoretically only had a limit after charging for 25 years, into the central pillar that served as the array's activation point.

After Luca spent about an hour to complete the design, he fell on his butt with a grunt before flopping on his back. "Tired... barely any time to rest..." The ten minute periods between his exams only amounted to him walking from room to room. He had virtually no time to recover his mental strength, so it was only natural that he was reaching his limits. The young boy almost began drifting off to sleep, with only the semi-distant and unfocused conversation between his three examiners keeping him from doing so.

Surprisingly, they left him alone even after finishing their discussion. Arcturus ended up being the one to wake up the young lad that had, to his confusion, somehow drifted off into dreamland. Grandmaster Athers chuckled with a smile, "Everyone's been treating you like a genius to the point where we'd forgotten that you're only ten years old. Unless you're impossibly strong, there's no way a ten-year-old could go through all of these exams without rest. I already told our fiery Head Guildmaster we decided to give you a chance to rest, which she agreed to after remembering your age. Did you enjoy your hour-long nap, my boy?"

"I fell asleep for an hour..? What time is it, then?" When he learned that it was closing in on 6:00 pm, the boy grumbled, "So now I get beaten up before going to bed? Fantastic." The three Array Specialists laughed heartily at this.

Master Helene managed to recover her wits first, walking over to kindly pat the half-dragon lad on the head, "You've already performed outstandingly, Luca. Don't forget that you have a long road ahead of you." After the Dragonborn boy nodded in agreement, she continued, "Now then, after our deliberation during your nap, we've come to the conclusion that you are a B-grade Array Specialist. From what we understand, this will be your second B-grade profession. Congratulations, young man, you are the first in over 500 years to have three professions at or above B-grade simultaneously before the age of 20."
