Chapter 55 - Royal Reception (1)

After the exhausting process of multiple exams, Luca was understandably taxed both physically and mentally. Of course, the sun had begun setting by the time the mock duel began, so it was decided to call it a day and let the poor boy rest. Luca took over a couch rather than head up two flights of stairs to the infirmary, where Elizabeth had mentioned that several beds in the recovery wing were unoccupied, falling into a deep sleep almost at the same instant his body flopped onto the cushions. Before he did though, he'd given Arcturus permission to explore and find something to eat, since the pair of them hadn't eaten since they'd left Bristol. The Dragonborn boy was too taxed to feel his hunger, but he would when he awoke.

The dragon whelp ended up deciding to follow the Head Guildmaster, just so he could talk with someone. As he hadn't learned [Telepathy], a common but often difficult to acquire Lv. 1 Unique ability, meaning that anyone could use it as long as they learned it, he could only chat with high-level mages, such as Elizabeth, or with her familiar. Normally, the Cyclone Goshawk would be roosting atop her perch in Elizabeth's office, but with the arrival of a Dragon Clansman stirring her curiosity, so Ella assured her partner that she'd keep Arcturus out of trouble.

Hours flew by as the sun fully dipped below the horizon, followed by the appearance of the glittering and fantastic starry sky and the rise of Selene, the satellite moon named for the Moon Goddess, one of the patron gods of all Elven races due to her being a prevalent figure during the age of the Ancient Elves. She was still revered by the Elven races, but not as profoundly as in ages past. She had mostly become the next most important deity to each Elven race, with the first varying based on which race. Wood Elves followed the Goddess of Nature, Mother Nature, often just simply called 'the Mother'. High Elves held the God of Magic, Heka, at the greatest esteem. The God of Darkness, Rahu, was the most revered to the Dark Elves. Blood Elves were odd, as they worshipped Ixtlilton, a minor deity of health that was often referred to as the Medicine Deity due to his great relationship with medicines. He was also a special deity as he supported the growth of all medicine and, by extension, alchemy, especially when Paracelsus rose to become the Alchemy Sage. A Blood Elf's innate magic was directly related to their health, especially when it came to their blood. The few rare exceptions to that were those whose expertise lay in the element of Poison, for varying reasons.

After an uneventful night, Luca and Arcturus prepared themselves for the arrival of the Royal Guard squadron, which would escort them to the palace. Unbeknownst to Luca at the time, Elizabeth had used the simulation array from the second exam to get his measurements, after which she found a friend in the city, a Grandmaster Tailor, to sew him an outfit appropriate for both formal and informal noble-related gatherings. Luca looked spectacular in the outfit, which gave the boy a striking impression of Kieran's clothes from Dragon Age: Inquisition. Though it did not have the crest in the centre of the chest like Kieran's did, everything else was identical save for the colours, which had been altered: a dark grey for the long-sleeved shirt and collar, and a similar grey but one shade darker for the pants, a shade of purple called 'purpureus' or 'purpura' was used for the vest, a metallic silver fabric took the place of the golden accents while a darker shade of silver made up the borders and replaced the blue laces in the collar. Paired with dress shoes that matched the shade of his pants, the Dragonborn boy had trouble recognizing himself in the mirror, especially after Elizabeth took it upon herself to trim his hair to suit a noble image, all while chuckling to herself about when she used to do this to her sons, the eldest of which hated haircuts. If Luca didn't know any better, he would have mistaken himself for a long-lost fraternal twin of Kieran.

The Dragonborn lad sighed a number of times as he waited for his escorts to arrive. When asked, he just mentioned that he knew he wasn't cut out for the behaviours of a noble. He also found formal clothing to be uncomfortable since it always came with a requirement of behaving like nobility.

About two hours past sunrise, the squadron of Royal Guards on horseback, followed by a carriage, arrived at the Mages Guild Headquarters, along with one of the seniormost stewards. After the steward entered the building, one of the employees near the entrance briefly stopped them and stated that their arrival had already been reported to the Head Guildmaster, who was currently en route with Luca and his familiar. Having saved some time thanks to the employee's quick response, the steward thanked him before taking a step off to the side to wait for his charges.

The unexpected appearance of the Royal Guards caused a stir of conversation among the populace in the area, as no announcement had been made of any major figure had been issued. However, when the two individuals responsible for it came from the offices in the Mages Guild Headquarters, the stir became more pronounced. A young white-haired boy in a custom-made suit and a silvery dragonling walked side-by-side, followed by Elizabeth Tudor.

Upon the trio arriving at the entrance of the building, the steward stepped forward, "I assume you are the young sir Luca, correct?" Upon receiving confirmation, along with a quick reintroduction of the boy and his familiar, the steward politely bowed and asked for them to follow, whilst thanking Elizabeth for her assistance.

"I know I was not invited by His Majesty, but may I come along? Luca has never experienced court affairs before, so I'd like to assist him somewhat." Despite Luca's brilliance, he was still only a child and had no actual guardian. As she planned to suggest to the king that he be placed in her care, Elizabeth hoped to provide some sort of support for Luca.

After a moment, the steward agreed before leading the three to the carriage, which soon began to follow the knights of the Royal Guard back to the palace. As they departed, rumours of a young boy and a dragon started to circulate from the Mages Guild Headquarters. With the amount of traffic that the Mages Guild saw on a regular basis, by the time Luca would meet the king, most of the city would be aware of the existence of the aforementioned dragonling and the white-haired boy.
