Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Promises and Uncertainties

(Liam's POV)

The ambient tapestry of clinking crystal, low laughter, and soft acoustic jazz filled the warm air of the restaurant as Linna and I finished the last remnants of our celebratory dinner. The flickering flame of the table's single candle danced wildly across her dark eyes, illuminating a raw, radiant joy that made my throat tighten. We had spent the last two hours talking about absolutely everything—unearthing buried university memories, dissecting our final exams, and projecting our wildest dreams onto the canvas of the future.

Yet, beneath this flawless, celebratory veneer, a quiet, toxic unease continued to claw ruthlessly at the margins of my mind, a persistent phantom refusing to let me go.

As we slowly sipped on our rich, dark after-dinner coffees, Linna leaned forward across the white linen tablecloth. She rested her chin in her palms, a beautiful, breathless smirk playing on her lips while her eyes practically caught fire with an electric, intoxicating excitement.

"You know," she began, her voice dropping to a soft, deeply intimate pitch that made the bustling room around us fade into static. "This just feels... right. Our graduation, this beautiful dinner, our survival... and, well, I think it's finally time for us to talk about what comes next, don't you think?"

"What exactly do you mean?" I asked. I forced my voice to remain perfectly smooth and casual, even as my pulse spiked violently against my ribs. The intense warmth radiating from her gaze and the eager, trembling anticipation in her tone filled me with equal, volatile parts of profound happiness and paralyzing apprehension.

"The promise, Liam! The one we made to each other!" she exclaimed, her untamed enthusiasm spilling over as she sat up, her hands moving animatedly. "Remember? We swore that the exact moment we both had those diplomas in our hands, we would officially start planning the wedding. That promise has been living in our hearts for so long now, just waiting for today."

Suddenly, that word—wedding—hung in the small space between our faces like a living, breathing entity. It was a beautiful, terrifying reminder of the shared universe we had spent years building block by block. A sudden, massive wave of genuine tenderness washed over me, melting a fraction of my icy armor. Yielding to the sheer beauty of her hope, I reached across the table, sliding my palm over hers and tightly interlocking our fingers.

"Yeah... I remember, Linna. Of course I remember," I whispered, fighting with every fiber of my being to inject the perfect, unblemished amount of romantic excitement into my expression.

A breathtaking smile completely fractured her face, her eyes shining so bright with unadulterated hope that it felt almost holy. "I am just so incredibly happy we're finally standing here at the starting line! Can you actually believe it?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly with the weight of her emotion. "We survived the gauntlet, Liam. All those horrific, endless nights of studying, the crushing stress of the exams, the moments we thought we'd break... it's all behind us. And now we finally get to move forward into the real world. Together. Permanently."

"Together," I echoed.

And for a single, fleeting, beautiful moment, I allowed myself to be entirely swept up in the current of her euphoria. My chest swelled to the point of aching at the profound thought of waking up next to her for the rest of my life, sharing a name, sharing a home. But the nagging, dark intuition in my gut refused to dissolve. In the absolute deepest shadows of my consciousness, the image of Aaron doubling over on the concrete walkway, running away into the blinding glare of the afternoon sun, flared back to life. It felt like a massive, suffocating eclipse looming directly over my joy, a silent betrayal of my best friend.

"So, tell me," Linna whispered, leaning in even closer over the candle, her eyes narrowing playfully as if we were co-conspirators sharing a sacred secret. "What grand dreams do you have now that you are officially a graduate?"

"Well, for starters," I said, a low chuckle escaping my throat as I desperately grabbed at a familiar, safe topic to bolster my performance, "I'd love to finally open up those old design notebooks and get started on the independent gaming studio we always talked about. We always believed we had the stomach to build something genuinely epic, didn't we?" I smiled, trying to harness the pure nostalgia of that dream to drown out the static in my head.

"Yes! Oh my god, yes!" she gasped, her grin widening until her cheeks flushed. "And wait—what if we incorporated that into our actual wedding? Liam, think about it! What if we combined our two biggest passions? A full video game theme for the ceremony and reception? It would be the ultimate, legendary celebration!"

Despite the anchor dragging in my chest, a genuine, breathless laugh broke from me at her sheer creativity. "That would certainly be an unforgettable event, Linna. I'm pretty sure our old classmates would lose their minds if they were invited to a gaming-themed wedding."

"Can you even imagine it? All of our closest friends showing up in flawless medieval or sci-fi cosplay, literally battling it out with foam swords on the dance floor during the reception? It would be absolutely legendary!"

The more we joked, the more her vibrant, relentless joy successfully pushed the heavy dark of my anxiety into the background. I allowed myself to anchor into her laughter, letting the fragile illusion of a perfect future soothe the raw edges of my spirit. For a few beautiful minutes, I was just a man dreaming with the woman he loved.

"And you know," she continued, her animated tone slowing down, shifting into a deeply serious, profoundly tender resonance that caught me entirely off guard. She looked down at our joined hands, her thumb gently tracing my knuckles. "I just... I truly cannot wait to start building our actual life, Liam. It's not just about the party or the wedding day. It's about every single quiet milestone that comes after it—finding our first apartment, launching our careers, and eventually... whenever we're ready... starting a family of our own."

My heart gave a violent, beautiful flutter at the word family, a sudden picture of a sunlit living room and children's laughter flashing across my mind. But the moment the image formed, the walls of my joy felt like they were closing in, suffocating me. The contrast was too brutal. How could I sit here in a five-star restaurant, mapping out the next thirty years of a perfect, blessed life, while my brother-in-arms was somewhere out there in the dark city, drowning in a silent crisis that had ripped him away from me?

"Linna," I began, my voice cracking slightly as a desperate, heavy need for honesty fought against my duty to protect her happiness. I swallowed hard, the words tasting like ash. "Linna, listen, I'm just—"

But before the confession could clear my lips, her excitement surged forward again, completely overtaking the fragile moment like a beautiful tidal wave. "And oh! Remember the old castle ruins?" she interrupted, her eyes wide with a sudden, brilliant realization. "The place where we used to skip classes and hide from the world when everything got too loud? Liam, I can totally see us taking our official engagement photos right there against the ancient stone walls! It's absolutely perfect, right?"

A soft, bittersweet chuckle escaped me, the sheer poetry of her mind breaking through my internal panic. "Yeah... yeah, it would be incredibly special, Linna. A beautiful nod to where we came from."

"Exactly!" she beamed, her eyes sparkling like stars under the amber chandeliers. "It will be like our story is coming entirely full circle. We can show the whole world that we successfully built an unbreakable, gorgeous life together from those exact humble, hidden beginnings."

"True," I agreed, but the word felt hollow as the terrifying worry inside my chest flickered back into a roaring flame. The safety of the restaurant felt like a lie. "Linna... please, just listen for a second. What if—what if things aren't as perfect as they look right now? What if—"

"I just honestly cannot wait to turn the page to this next chapter," she breathed, completely, blissfully blind to the agonizing civil war tearing my soul apart. She reached across, her fingers gently cupping my jawline, her features etched with a sincerity so profound it physically pained me. "Liam, for the first time in my life, I feel like we are exactly, flawlessly where we were always meant to be. Just the two of us. Intact. I love you so much."

Her words wrapped around my shivering spirit like a heavy, velvet embrace, offering a sanctuary I desperately wanted to surrender to. But as I leaned into the touch of her hand, the thick, heavy barrier between my heart and my mind widened into a canyon.

Where is Aaron?

The thought screamed through my head, a vicious reminder of the jagged, bleeding void left in my gut. I was living a double life in the span of a single heartbeat.

"I love you too, Linna. With everything I have," I replied. The words were entirely sincere—I loved her enough to die for her—but the moment they left my mouth, the immense, suffocating weight of my unspoken fears loomed over the table like a shroud.

As the conversation naturally drifted back to the lighter logistics of venues, color palettes, and guest lists, I made a conscious, brutal choice. I threw my entire being into her optimism, aggressively matching her enthusiasm and savoring every single smile she offered me. She was a brilliant, untamed light in my life, and in the radiant center of her presence, the dark, scratching unease in my mind finally began to quiet down, if only for an hour. But it never truly vanished. It sat there, coiled in the dark, waiting for the candles to burn out.

For the rest of that night, I chose to accept the profound beauty of the present moment while silently holding onto the terrifying uncertainty of what lay ahead. I would let her have her perfect graduation night. She deserved that much.

But as we finally stood up to leave, and I felt the weight of my diploma folder in my hand, I looked out past the restaurant windows into the black, sprawling city grid. Tomorrow, the illusion would end. Tomorrow, I would find Aaron. I would hunt him down to the ends of the earth and force him to let me inside his walls, because a future built on real love isn't just about dreaming in the light—it's about being brave enough to show up and fight for the people who belong in your kingdom, even when they vanish into the dark.
