Chapter 110 - The Things That Must Not Stay

Chu Hanyin noticed the problem after everyone else had declared the test successful.

That was becoming a pattern.

She stood in the center of the training field with Stillwater Thread suspended around her in lines too fine for ordinary sight.

Twenty paces away, Long Canglan lowered his newly bonded spear.

The Ninefold Resonance faded from around them.

Qi Qinghe checked the meridian lattice.

"Clean release."

Mu Shuyin looked through three overlapping arrays.

"No residual routing."

Jin Lianzhen was smiling.

That should have warned everyone.

Long Zhaoyan stretched both arms above his head.

"See? Perfect."

Hanyin said, "No."

The smile vanished from Lianzhen's face.

Zhaoyan lowered his arms.

"Ah."

Everyone looked toward Hanyin.

She had not moved.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

Lianzhen crossed the distance first.

"What?"

Hanyin lifted her left hand.

A single thread ran between two fingers.

"Again."

Lianzhen frowned.

"The test?"

"No."

Hanyin pulled.

The thread moved.

Barely.

Ji Xuanyue saw nothing wrong.

Neither did Shen Yaoran.

Han Zhenyu narrowed his eyes.

Feng Chixiao tilted his head.

Qinghe was already moving closer.

Hanyin released the thread.

Then moved her wrist again.

This time Ji felt it.

Not in the thread.

In Hanyin's sleeve.

A resistance so small Ji would have dismissed it as imagination if Hanyin had not already told them where to look.

Lianzhen's face changed.

"Take it off."

Hanyin did.

Immediately.

The bonded garment separated from her body but did not lose its connection.

The soul-bond remained.

It always would now.

That was the point.

The fabric rested across Lianzhen's hands.

Qinghe touched two fingers to it.

Pale meridian-light entered the material.

Mu layered an array over the garment.

Silence.

Then Qinghe said:

"It kept the reinforcement."

Zhenyu frowned.

"Which reinforcement?"

Mu expanded the test record.

During the Ninefold exercise, Hanyin had taken a pressure strike from Canglan.

Not a serious one.

Enough to force the Ninefold to redistribute support through the recipient structure.

Hanyin's bonded garment had responded correctly.

It had become fractionally more resistant along the line of impact.

The Ninefold released.

The garment had not completely returned.

Lianzhen stared at the reading.

"It learned."

Hanyin nodded.

"The wrong thing."

Zhaoyan looked at the sleeve.

"It protected you."

"It interferes now."

He nodded immediately.

"Wrong thing."

Hanyin glanced toward him.

Something almost like amusement touched her eyes.

Zhaoyan noticed.

He smiled.

Then, unusually, did not say anything else.

Canglan rotated his spear once.

Stopped.

Everyone looked toward him.

Lianzhen's expression darkened further.

"You too?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"The left pull."

Zhaoyan brightened.

"More dramatic?"

Canglan looked at him.

"Less."

Zhaoyan's expression became genuinely offended.

"That is catastrophic."

Canglan ignored him.

He held the spear horizontally.

"It is correcting for Ninefold support."

Ji frowned.

During the test, the Resonance had partially compensated for the directional stress produced when Canglan deliberately invoked the old leftward deviation.

The weapon had adapted.

Correctly.

Temporarily.

Now it remembered.

Canglan thrust.

The spear moved left.

Then corrected itself halfway through.

He stopped.

"No."

Lianzhen closed her eyes.

Two successful permanent systems.

Two successful Ninefold interactions.

Two failures afterward.

Zhenyu looked toward the forge.

"Do we destroy them?"

Lianzhen's eyes snapped open.

"No."

The answer came with enough force that he lifted both hands.

"I asked."

"They are bonded."

"I know."

"You do not destroy bonded equipment because it learned something wrong."

Zhenyu considered.

"What do you do?"

Lianzhen stared at Hanyin's garment.

Then Canglan's spear.

"I don't know."

Everyone became very quiet.

Lianzhen noticed.

Her expression sharpened.

"I said I don't know yet."

Zhaoyan nodded solemnly.

"Much better."

Qiu Liezhen elbowed him.

Hard.

He looked at her.

"That was encouragement."

"That was noise."

Feng smiled.

Qiu looked toward him.

"Do not."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were about to."

"I was going to agree with you."

"That would have been worse."

Feng looked delighted.

Ji turned back toward the equipment.

The problem was worse than another failed prototype.

Failed prototypes could be discarded.

Permanent equipment could not.

Or rather, it should not.

The entire philosophy Lianzhen had built depended upon continuity.

History.

Accumulation.

The equipment was meant to grow with its bearer rather than being replaced every time the bearer changed.

But growth created another possibility.

Learning something that should have been forgotten.

Mu projected the Ninefold state around Hanyin's garment.

"The equipment cannot distinguish why it changed."

Qinghe nodded.

"It recognized a valid bearer-state interaction."

"It was valid."

"Yes."

"Then what makes it wrong afterward?"

Hanyin answered.

"It was never mine."

Silence.

Ji looked at her.

Hanyin touched the sleeve.

"The protection came through Ninefold."

Qinghe's eyes sharpened.

"The state was real."

"But borrowed," Ji said.

Mu looked toward her.

Ji felt the thought forming.

The equipment knew Hanyin had survived a pressure condition.

It knew what adaptation had allowed her to survive it.

It did not know that the adaptation had been partially enabled by twelve other people.

Canglan looked at his spear.

"Same."

Lianzhen nodded slowly.

"The weapon remembers that this correction produced a successful attack under Ninefold."

"But without Ninefold," Canglan said, "the correction is wrong."

Zhenyu folded his arms.

"So the equipment remembers outcomes."

Lianzhen looked toward him.

"Yes."

"Not ownership."

Her eyes changed.

Qinghe looked toward Zhenyu too.

Mu smiled.

Zhenyu glanced around.

"What?"

Lianzhen pointed at him.

"Say it again."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because now you're looking at me like I am part of the forge."

"You are standing in the forge."

"That is different."

Ji laughed.

Lianzhen ignored her.

"Outcomes. Not ownership."

Zhenyu sighed.

"The equipment learned that something worked. It did not learn whose power made it work."

Lianzhen stared.

Then turned toward Qinghe.

"Path origin."

He nodded.

"Possible."

Mu was already rebuilding the recorded state.

"Every Ninefold contribution has routing history."

"Not enough," Qinghe said.

"Why?"

"Because the bearer participates in the route."

Mu frowned.

Then understood.

"You cannot simply label all Resonance-derived change external."

"No."

Hanyin's threads moved around her.

"Some of it becomes mine while I use it."

Ji looked toward her.

There was the next problem.

Ninefold did not merely lend strength like someone passing a weapon across a table.

It altered what the thirteen could do together.

A correction could begin outside the bearer and become part of their own technique before the instant ended.

Qiu walked closer.

"Then the distinction is not internal and external."

Lianzhen looked at her.

"What is it?"

Qiu touched Hanyin's garment.

"Accepted."

Ji frowned.

Qiu continued.

"A boundary does not care where something originated."

She looked toward Hanyin.

"It cares whether it belongs on this side."

Feng's smile faded into thoughtfulness.

Qinghe nodded.

"Ownership through incorporation."

Mu looked at the routing model.

"Temporary states remain provisional unless the bearer retains them after the Resonance is gone."

Lianzhen inhaled.

"History needs layers."

Zhaoyan looked concerned.

"How many?"

No one answered him.

He looked toward Jinheng.

"Too many?"

Jinheng nodded.

"Always."

Lianzhen moved.

The entire group followed.

They returned to the forge.

Hanyin's garment lay across one table.

Canglan placed his spear beside it.

Lianzhen projected both histories.

Not metaphorically.

Every bonded system retained a record of its meaningful adaptations.

The history appeared as a branching lattice.

Some changes had already become deep.

Canglan's deliberate leftward option.

Hanyin's requirement for structural silence.

Those belonged to them.

Other changes were shallow.

Recent.

The unwanted Ninefold reinforcement sat near the outermost layers.

Lianzhen stared.

"Why did we let every successful adaptation become permanent?"

Mu answered.

"Because before soul-bonding, survival was the success condition."

Qinghe nodded.

"And now survival is insufficient."

Ji smiled faintly.

They kept learning that lesson.

A thing could survive and still be wrong.

Lianzhen separated the outer history.

"Provisional."

Qinghe said, "Until?"

"The bearer confirms it."

Hanyin frowned.

"Consciously?"

"No."

Lianzhen answered immediately.

"That would be unusable."

Zhaoyan nodded.

"Imagine having to approve your sleeve after every attack."

Hanyin looked at him.

"I would remove the sleeve."

"Exactly."

Qinghe studied the model.

"Confirmation can be behavioral."

Mu understood.

"If the bearer continues producing the adaptation after Ninefold ends—"

"It belongs to them."

"If it disappears—"

"Do not retain it."

Ji lifted one hand.

"What if something happens once and matters permanently?"

Lianzhen looked toward her.

"Of course you would ask that."

"It is a real problem."

"Yes."

"A person can learn from one moment."

"Yes."

"Equipment has to as well."

Lianzhen looked irritated.

Not at Ji.

At the fact that she was right.

Qiu crossed her arms.

"Then frequency cannot decide."

"No."

Qinghe said, "Continuity."

Ji looked toward him.

He continued.

"If the changed behavior remains continuous with the bearer after the external condition disappears, it can be promoted."

Lianzhen frowned.

"That sounds difficult to measure."

Ji smiled.

Everyone looked at her.

She stopped smiling.

"No."

Xuanye's voice came from behind her.

"You haven't been asked."

"I know what that look means."

Lianzhen looked innocent.

Ji pointed.

"You want causality."

"Yes."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because every time something becomes complicated, all of you decide causality is convenient."

Zhaoyan nodded.

"It is."

Ji glared.

He smiled.

Xuanye stepped beside her.

"She is right."

Ji turned toward him.

"Thank you."

"About becoming a shortcut."

Her gratitude weakened.

Lianzhen sighed.

"Fine."

Mu looked toward Ji.

"We only need you to identify the pattern once."

Ji considered.

That was different.

Not maintaining the system.

Not being responsible for every future decision.

Teaching it what to recognize.

She looked toward Hanyin.

"Wear it."

Hanyin did.

The bond settled around her.

Ji opened her Gate slightly.

Not enough to manipulate.

Only perceive.

Mu activated a weak Ninefold link.

Zhenyu supplied a small pressure field.

The Resonance compensated.

Hanyin's garment adapted.

Ji followed the causal change.

The garment recorded:

Hanyin under pressure.

Ninefold support.

Protective response.

Successful survival.

Then Mu released the Resonance.

The support vanished.

Hanyin's body returned to ordinary conditions.

The garment tried to retain the adaptation.

Ji watched.

There.

The causal relationship broke.

Not violently.

The reason for the adaptation no longer existed.

Hanyin herself did not preserve it.

"Now."

Lianzhen separated the history layer.

The garment relaxed.

Hanyin moved her wrist.

Stillwater Thread appeared.

No drag.

She nodded.

Lianzhen smiled.

Again.

This time Hanyin deliberately altered her own defensive technique while Ninefold was active.

She changed the angle of her thread lattice.

The garment adapted.

Ninefold released.

Hanyin kept the altered technique.

The reason remained.

Ji watched.

"Keep."

Lianzhen promoted the history.

The garment retained only the relevant change.

Hanyin moved again.

No interference.

Qinghe nodded slowly.

"Good."

Mu looked at the model.

"We can encode the distinction."

Qiu corrected.

"The boundary."

Lianzhen smiled.

"Accepted history."

Zhaoyan frowned.

"That sounds sentimental."

Qiu looked at him.

"You sound unnecessary."

He placed one hand against his chest.

Hanyin's thread flicked out.

Caught his wrist.

Pulled his hand down.

He looked at her.

She said:

"Hold still."

Zhaoyan immediately did.

Lianzhen had been trying to measure the resonance response through his sleeve.

Ji noticed.

So did Feng.

Neither said anything.

Hanyin adjusted one thread around Zhaoyan's forearm.

"Again."

He released a small pulse of scarlet-gold flame.

She watched the fabric.

"Too slow."

Lianzhen groaned.

Zhaoyan remained perfectly still.

That might have been the most impressive thing Ji saw all morning.

The new history architecture took two days.

Lianzhen called it provisional adaptation.

Mu called it conditional state retention.

Qinghe called both names imprecise.

Qiu called it:

"Do not remember everything."

That name survived longest.

The rule was simple.

Implementation was not.

Permanent equipment could change freely in combat.

It could even preserve useful responses through repeated states.

But no new adaptation entered deep history merely because it had prevented damage.

The equipment waited.

Observed.

Compared the state after Ninefold release.

Compared the bearer's own continued behavior.

Only when the adaptation remained continuous with the bearer did it become part of the equipment's lasting identity.

The rest faded.

Not forgotten.

Stored shallowly.

Available if the same temporary condition returned.

A memory without a scar.

That distinction transformed the forge.

Canglan tested his spear again.

Ninefold altered the leftward commitment route.

The weapon adapted.

Ninefold released.

The correction disappeared.

Canglan thrust.

The spear curved exactly as he intended.

No more.

No less.

"Good," he said.

Lianzhen smiled.

Zhaoyan leaned toward Jinheng.

"That is basically screaming for him."

Canglan heard.

"Yes."

Zhaoyan stared.

"Stop accepting insults."

"No."

Hanyin's garment behaved correctly too.

Afterward, Zhaoyan inspected one sleeve.

Hanyin noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You are staring."

"I wanted to see if it moved."

"It didn't."

"Good."

She looked at him for a moment.

Then reached over and straightened the fastening at his collar.

Zhaoyan froze.

Hanyin released it.

"You were crooked."

He looked down.

Then at her.

"Thank you."

She had already turned away.

Feng was smiling.

Qiu stepped on his foot.

He looked at her.

"What did I do?"

"Nothing yet."

"That is tyranny."

"Yes."

The forging accelerated.

Not because the remaining systems became easy.

Because mistakes stopped requiring new philosophy every time.

Shen Yaoran bonded next.

Her equipment had learned to survive the returning cycle without anticipating it.

The distinction mattered.

Every time her twin returning radiances completed a loop, her garments and protective layers accepted the energy passing through them.

They did not prepare the next return before she chose it.

The first time the bond settled, Qinghe checked every pathway three times.

Shen watched him.

Then placed a cup beside his hand.

He did not notice.

She moved it closer.

Still nothing.

She looked at Ji.

Ji smiled.

Shen picked up the cup.

Put it directly into Qinghe's hand.

He blinked.

"What?"

"Drink."

"I am measuring—"

"Drink."

He looked at the readings.

Then at her.

Then drank.

Shen smiled.

Qinghe returned to the readings.

Half a breath later:

"Your third return is still hotter on the left side."

Shen sighed.

"You couldn't let me have one moment."

"It matters."

"I know."

She moved closer to the projection.

"Show me."

He did.

Neither released the cup.

Mu Shuyin followed.

Her system was not one thing.

It was clothing.

Protective layers.

Small array interfaces.

Storage architecture.

A weapon component that Lianzhen refused to classify because Mu kept changing what it needed to do.

The whole system bonded cleanly.

Then Mu created a formation.

The clothing participated.

Not commanded.

Participated.

Jinheng stood across from her.

"Ready?"

Mu looked at the array.

Then at him.

"Yes."

He moved.

Lightning crossed the field.

Mu lifted two fingers.

Left.

Jinheng had already moved left before she finished the gesture.

The array closed behind him.

Another pulse returned from the opposite side.

He shifted again.

No collision.

No hesitation.

They repeated the sequence faster.

Mu changed one route deliberately.

Jinheng changed with it.

A third.

A fourth.

Then she stopped.

Jinheng stopped at the same instant.

Mu looked at the equipment readings.

"Good."

Jinheng stepped closer.

There was a thin burn across his wrist.

Mu caught his hand.

He looked down.

"You're burned."

"Barely."

"That was not the question."

"There was no question."

Mu looked at him.

Jinheng smiled.

She repaired the damaged fabric around his wrist anyway.

He let her.

Zhaoyan watched from a distance.

Hanyin's thread wrapped around his sleeve before he could say anything.

He looked at it.

Then at her.

She shook her head once.

He sighed.

Silence survived.

For almost a minute.

Han Zhenyu's equipment bonded after that.

The process took less time than expected.

The tests took longer.

Lianzhen had finally learned that his system needed to treat monstrous pressure as an ordinary environmental condition.

The first permanent armor candidate succeeded.

Then Zhenyu increased output.

It sank through the floor.

Lianzhen stared.

Zhenyu looked down.

"Too heavy."

"No."

"Yes."

"The floor is weak."

"This floor survived Jinheng."

"It did not survive you."

"Exactly."

Lianzhen crossed her arms.

Zhenyu smiled.

She made another.

That one did not sink.

He moved.

Stopped.

"Too light."

She closed her eyes.

Ji looked toward Xuanye.

He was watching with suspicious calm.

"You find this funny."

"No."

"Liar."

He looked at her.

"You are learning."

"That was not a denial."

Canglan, passing nearby, said:

"No."

Xuanye stopped.

Ji laughed.

The third Zhenyu system worked.

Heavy enough to belong to him.

Light enough not to dictate his movement.

His weapon foundation responded to his pressure without amplifying it unintentionally.

When the soul-bond settled, the ground beneath him compressed two inches.

Lianzhen stared.

Zhenyu looked down.

"Acceptable."

She nodded.

"Acceptable."

Then he handed her food.

She took it.

No conversation.

Ji noticed that had become routine.

Lianzhen no longer complained.

That might have been the strangest development of all.

Feng Chixiao and Qiu Liezhen became problems simultaneously.

This was mostly their fault.

"You are not testing together," Qinghe said.

Feng looked toward Qiu.

"Why?"

Qiu answered.

"Because you are irritating."

"I meant him."

"I know."

Lianzhen pointed at two separate forge stations.

"Different systems. Different problems."

Feng walked toward his.

Qiu toward hers.

Neither argued.

For three breaths.

Then Feng looked over.

"What material is that?"

Qiu did not look at him.

"None of your concern."

"It looks brittle."

"It isn't."

"Looks brittle."

Qiu turned.

"Would you like to test it with your face?"

Feng smiled.

"There she is."

Qiu stared.

Then turned away.

Lianzhen rubbed her temples.

Feng's permanent system had one central law:

Renewal could never mean restoration to the past.

His equipment had to survive destruction, repair, cycling, and Embodiment without deciding that the correct version was an older version.

An earlier bearer of the Phoenix Royal Gate supplied several inherited memories of exactly that mistake.

One old protective system had become nearly impossible to destroy.

It had also become nearly impossible to improve.

Every time it was damaged, it restored itself to the configuration it had possessed centuries earlier.

Eventually the bearer had outgrown it completely.

Feng rejected the principle immediately.

His equipment would renew forward.

Never backward.

Qiu's problem was almost opposite.

Everything around her wanted to become separate.

Weapon from hand.

Armor from garment.

One bonded piece from another.

A predecessor of the Qiongqi Royal Gate had once solved that by enforcing absolute unity across an equipment system.

It had worked until a single component broke.

The definition of one system had caused the fracture to propagate everywhere.

Qiu stared at the inherited memory.

"No."

Lianzhen nodded.

"No."

Feng looked over.

"You two agreeing is frightening."

Qiu looked at him.

"Focus."

"I am."

"No, you're watching me."

Feng smiled.

"Also true."

Qiu's expression remained flat.

Her ears did not.

Ji noticed.

She looked away.

Some things deserved mercy.

Feng's first permanent bond almost succeeded.

Renewal moved through weapon, garment, and protective layers.

Damage occurred.

The system repaired forward.

Good.

He deepened into shallow Primordial Embodiment.

Still good.

Then he withdrew.

One section of the armor renewed too quickly.

Qiu's hand closed around his wrist before Qinghe spoke.

"Stop."

Feng stopped.

Immediately.

No joke.

No argument.

Qiu looked at the equipment.

"It's carrying the Embodied state into withdrawal."

Lianzhen reached them.

Qinghe confirmed.

"She's right."

Feng looked at Qiu's hand around his wrist.

Then at her.

"I knew you'd catch it."

Qiu released him.

"Someone has to."

Feng smiled.

Qiu walked away.

Lianzhen stared after her.

Then at Feng.

"Do not."

"I said nothing."

"You were about to."

"No."

Ji laughed from across the forge.

The correction took six hours.

Feng bonded successfully before midnight.

Qiu refused to bond hers while tired.

That was sensible.

Everyone praised her.

She threatened them.

She bonded the next morning.

Qi Qinghe's system took longer.

Not because the forging failed.

Because he kept redesigning it.

Lianzhen eventually took his notes away.

He stared.

"Give those back."

"No."

"They are mine."

"They are harming you."

"That is not how notes work."

Shen appeared beside him.

"It is today."

Qinghe looked between them.

"This is unreasonable."

Shen took his cup.

It was empty.

She frowned.

"You didn't refill this."

"I was working."

"Exactly."

She walked away with it.

Qinghe looked toward Ji.

Ji shook her head.

"No help."

Qinghe sighed.

The staff foundation in front of him was already beautiful.

Not ornamented.

Correct.

Its meridian pathways could shift without moving the physical center.

No channel was mandatory.

No route permanent.

The weapon could support his order without becoming the order itself.

Lianzhen returned his notes only after he agreed to test it.

He lifted the staff.

Energy moved.

Ten thousand possible pathways seemed to awaken without any one demanding priority.

Qinghe's expression changed.

The staff turned once in his hand.

Then again.

His Gate opened.

The bond began.

Shen returned with the cup.

Stopped.

Watched.

The meridian lattice expanded around Qinghe.

The staff accepted it.

Did not copy.

Did not dominate.

Participated.

Qinghe exhaled.

The bond settled.

For several breaths nobody spoke.

Then Shen handed him the cup.

He took it.

Still looking at the staff.

"What do you call it?" she asked.

Qinghe was silent.

The answer did not seem newly invented.

It seemed recognized.

"Meridian Halo Staff."

Lianzhen looked toward him.

Qinghe's hand tightened slightly around the shaft.

"The Celestial Axis of Ten Thousand Channels."

Zhaoyan stared.

"That is an absurdly long name."

Qinghe drank.

Shen smiled into her own cup.

"No one asked you."

Zhaoyan looked betrayed.

Hanyin's thread tightened around his sleeve.

He sighed.

Ji decided the forge was becoming dangerous in entirely new ways.

Days passed.

Permanent systems accumulated.

Not finished.

Bonded.

Alive with history in the only sense that mattered.

Hanyin.

Canglan.

Shen.

Mu.

Zhenyu.

Feng.

Qiu.

Qinghe.

Eight.

Others approached.

Zhaoyan's system survived everything except Zhaoyan.

He found this insulting.

Jinheng's survived Jinheng but not the speed at which his charge could redefine where the equipment was expected to be.

Lianzhen's own system kept becoming too efficient at manipulating weight.

She destroyed two versions herself.

Xuanye's refused to be solved at all.

Nothing Lianzhen built could decide how much adaptation was enough when the bearer himself could make change stop being a reliable assumption.

And Ji—

Ji was worse.

Lianzhen had stopped pretending otherwise.

Six garment foundations.

Four weapon cores.

Three interface architectures.

All failed before bonding.

Not because they broke.

Because they knew too much.

Ji stood in the forge wearing the latest candidate.

Lianzhen circled her.

"Fold."

Ji folded space.

The equipment followed.

"Time."

Ji altered the local interval.

The equipment followed.

"Energy."

Ji changed the flow through her Gate.

The equipment followed.

"Causality."

Ji looked at her.

"Be specific."

"Do something."

"That is not specific."

"Exactly."

Ji sighed.

She changed the relationship between her next step and the point where she arrived.

The garment followed.

The weapon foundation adjusted.

Nothing broke.

Lianzhen frowned.

Ji smiled.

"You look disappointed."

"I am."

"Why?"

"It worked."

"That seems bad for your mental health."

"Yes."

Xuanye stood at the edge of the forge.

Lianzhen looked toward him.

"Again."

Ji turned.

"No."

Xuanye raised an eyebrow.

"You are tired."

"I am not."

"You are."

"I have been standing here for an hour."

"You have been altering causality for an hour."

"That is not the same."

"It is worse."

Ji stared.

Lianzhen looked between them.

"Ten minutes."

Ji looked at her.

"Whose side are you on?"

"The equipment's."

"Of course."

Ji left the forge.

Xuanye followed.

They sat on the ridge above the training field.

Not close.

Not far.

The artificial sky was turning toward evening because someone had decided the dimension should imitate days.

Ji suspected Mu.

Possibly Shen.

Zhaoyan would have made sunsets excessively dramatic.

She looked toward Xuanye.

"You told her to stop?"

"No."

"You agreed very quickly."

"Yes."

Ji frowned.

"You think I'm tired."

"Yes."

"I am not."

Xuanye looked at her.

She sighed.

"Fine."

Silence.

Comfortable.

That had happened without Ji noticing when.

Below them, Lianzhen and Zhenyu argued over something heavy.

Ji could not hear the words.

She could infer them.

Too light.

Too heavy.

Probably both.

Feng and Qiu were testing separate sections of equipment while pretending not to watch each other.

Hanyin had Zhaoyan standing perfectly still again.

Ji smiled.

"What?" Xuanye asked.

"Nothing."

He looked toward the forge.

Then smiled faintly.

Ji caught it.

"There."

"What?"

"You smiled."

"No."

"I saw it."

"You were looking away."

"I have excellent peripheral vision."

"Convenient."

Ji leaned back on her hands.

"Very."

Another silence.

Then Xuanye said:

"Your equipment is failing because it is trying to learn you."

Ji looked toward him.

"That is the purpose."

"No."

She waited.

He looked toward the forge.

"Everyone else's equipment learns stable rules."

"Hanyin's doesn't interfere."

"Yes."

"Canglan's follows commitment."

"Yes."

"Feng's renews forward."

"Yes."

"Qiu's—"

"You do not have stable rules."

Ji stared.

"That was rude."

"It was accurate."

She considered throwing him off the ridge.

He would survive.

That reduced the appeal.

"What do I have?"

Xuanye looked at her.

"Authority."

Ji's expression changed.

He continued.

"You decide what the technique is when you use it."

"That is not always true."

"No."

"But?"

"The equipment keeps trying to recognize your methods."

Ji looked down at her hands.

Fold.

Time.

Causality.

Energy.

Space.

All manifestations.

Not the source.

Xuanye said:

"It should recognize when something is yours."

Ji looked at him.

Not how.

Not what.

Who.

Her pulse changed.

She hated when he did that.

"Lianzhen is going to be annoyed."

"Yes."

"Because you solved part of her problem."

"I did not."

"You did."

"No."

Canglan's voice floated from far below.

"Yes."

Ji laughed so hard she had to cover her face.

Xuanye looked toward the forge.

"How does he keep hearing us?"

"I don't know."

Canglan did not answer.

That made it worse.

Ji returned ten minutes later.

Exactly.

Lianzhen looked at her.

Then Xuanye.

"What?"

Ji smiled.

"He has an idea."

Xuanye looked at her.

"You have an idea."

"You started it."

"I stated an observation."

Lianzhen pointed at both of them.

"Someone talk."

Ji picked up the latest failed weapon foundation.

"Stop teaching it my techniques."

Lianzhen went still.

Qinghe looked over.

Mu too.

Ji continued.

"It does not need to understand what I am doing."

Lianzhen's eyes narrowed.

"We already learned that."

"No. We learned it should not validate causality."

"Yes."

"We still keep building around every way I use my Gate."

Silence.

Xuanye stepped beside her.

"It should recognize her authority."

Lianzhen looked at him.

Then Ji.

Then the equipment.

Qinghe approached.

"Authority is not a measurable state."

Ji smiled.

"Good."

Qinghe frowned.

"That was not praise."

"I know."

Mu looked interested.

"Identity without method."

Qiu joined them.

"Ownership again."

Lianzhen's eyes widened.

Hanyin's problem had been temporary reinforcement that never belonged to her.

Ji's was the inverse.

Unknown effects that did belong to her even if the equipment had never seen them.

Lianzhen took the garment foundation.

"You do something impossible."

Ji smiled.

"Frequently."

"The equipment asks one question."

"What?"

Lianzhen looked at her.

"Yours?"

Ji's Gate stirred.

That simple.

Yet that difficult.

Qinghe slowly nodded.

"If yes, maintain continuity."

Mu added, "Do not interpret the effect."

Qiu:

"Do not classify it."

Xuanye:

"Follow."

Ji looked toward him.

He met her eyes.

For a moment the forge disappeared.

Not literally.

Ji would have noticed.

Then Zhaoyan called:

"Why is everyone being dramatic?"

The moment died.

Ji turned.

Hanyin tugged his sleeve with a thread.

He looked down.

"Again?"

"Yes."

He sighed.

Ji smiled.

Lianzhen was already building.

The new candidate looked simpler than the others.

That had become another pattern.

The closer they came to the right answer, the less the equipment tried to prove how clever it was.

No catalog of techniques.

No causal prediction architecture.

No temporal anticipation.

No space-fold templates.

The structure held only continuity.

Bearer.

Authority.

Acceptance.

Ji wore it.

The weapon foundation settled into her hand.

Still unfinished.

No name.

No final shape.

Lianzhen stepped back.

"Do something I haven't measured."

Ji looked toward Xuanye.

He smiled.

Barely.

"Fight?"

She smiled back.

"Now?"

"Yes."

Lianzhen pointed.

"Not seriously."

Neither answered.

"That was not optional."

Feng laughed.

The training field opened.

Ji and Xuanye entered.

No Ninefold.

No Embodiment.

Suppressed enough not to destroy the equipment candidate before it could provide data.

Xuanye attacked first.

Ji expected that.

So he stopped.

That she did not expect.

His strike halted before commitment.

Ji had already folded space to evade.

Nothing needed evading.

Xuanye changed direction.

Ji collapsed the fold into an attack.

He stepped through the point she had intended to occupy.

Impossible.

Annoying.

She changed the causal outcome.

Not a technique she had practiced.

Not exactly.

The weapon in her hand moved.

Did not hesitate.

The garment followed.

No attempt to interpret.

No correction.

No drag.

Xuanye's hand reached her shoulder.

Ji removed the usefulness of the contact by making her next motion causally precede the balance shift it should have required.

She moved.

The equipment moved.

Lianzhen shouted from outside the field.

"It held!"

Ji smiled.

Xuanye attacked.

She barely blocked.

"That was rude."

"You were distracted."

"I know."

He moved again.

Ji folded time around the weapon.

Then abandoned the effect halfway through and used the collapsing interval to alter distance instead.

The equipment accepted the contradiction because it did not consider it a contradiction.

Ji had done it.

Therefore it belonged.

The candidate stayed continuous.

Xuanye's eyes sharpened.

Ji smiled.

He increased pressure.

Not power.

Complexity.

He attacked decisions.

Changed rhythm.

Refused expected follow-ups.

Forced Ji into reactions she had never rehearsed.

The equipment followed everything.

Ji became increasingly delighted.

Xuanye noticed.

"That is concerning."

"You started this."

"You say that often."

"Because you often start things."

He nearly smiled.

Ji attacked.

The field bent around them.

Then Xuanye appeared behind her.

His hand touched her back.

Ji froze.

He had won the exchange.

Again.

Closer.

Again.

She turned.

"You cheated."

"No."

"You knew where I would fold."

"Yes."

"That is cheating."

"No."

From outside the field, Canglan said:

"No."

Ji looked toward him.

"Whose side are you on?"

"Accuracy."

Zhaoyan laughed.

Ji turned back toward Xuanye.

He was smiling now.

Actually smiling.

Small.

Undeniable.

She pointed.

"There."

The smile disappeared.

"Nothing."

"Coward."

He attacked.

Ji laughed and moved.

The candidate survived seventeen minutes.

Then the garment tore.

Lianzhen shouted.

They stopped.

Ji looked down.

One seam had opened.

Physical failure.

Only physical.

Lianzhen crossed the field at frightening speed.

She inspected it.

Qinghe followed.

Mu behind him.

Ji waited.

Lianzhen looked up.

"Material."

Ji smiled.

"No conceptual failure?"

"No."

"No authority conflict?"

"No."

"No method prediction?"

"No."

Xuanye looked toward her.

Ji felt herself smiling too widely.

She did not care.

Lianzhen looked at the torn seam.

Then at Ji.

"I can forge this."

The words landed differently now.

Not a prototype.

Not another candidate.

This.

Her system.

Not yet bonded.

Not yet complete.

But solved.

Structurally.

Ji looked toward the table where the other histories waited.

Eight bonded.

Five unresolved.

Now four.

Lianzhen turned toward Xuanye.

He immediately said:

"No."

Everyone stared.

She frowned.

"I did not say anything."

"You were going to use Ji's solution on me."

Lianzhen paused.

"Yes."

"No."

"Why?"

"It will fail."

"How do you know?"

"Because her authority permits change."

"And yours?"

Xuanye looked toward his own hand.

Cold gathered.

Not temperature.

State narrowing.

"Mine permits refusal."

Lianzhen stared.

Then smiled.

Xuanye looked displeased.

Ji laughed.

"Your turn."

He looked at her.

"You seem happy."

"Extremely."

"Concerning."

"Very."

The forge continued into night.

Nine systems were now structurally solved.

Eight bonded.

By dawn, Zhaoyan became nine.

His bonding ceremony was ruined by his own attempt to make it dramatic.

Hanyin extinguished the unnecessary flame display with one thread.

He looked at her.

"That was part of the atmosphere."

"It was blocking the measurement."

"It was beautiful."

"It was blocking the measurement beautifully."

Zhaoyan paused.

Then smiled.

"I'll take it."

Hanyin looked away.

Jinheng bonded later that afternoon.

Mu stood beside the monitoring arrays.

He looked toward her before beginning.

"Left?"

She checked the pathway.

"Always."

He nodded.

No one understood what that meant.

They apparently did.

The bond settled cleanly.

Ten.

Lianzhen's own equipment followed.

She complained throughout the entire process.

Zhenyu stood beside the forge holding three tools she had not asked for yet.

Every time she reached out, the correct one was already there.

Eventually she stopped looking.

Her hand moved.

A tool appeared.

Again.

Again.

At one point she reached without speaking.

Nothing touched her palm.

She looked toward him.

Zhenyu was holding food.

"Wrong tool."

"You need this more."

She frowned.

He waited.

She took it.

Then held out her hand again.

The hammer appeared.

Ji smiled.

Eleven.

Qiu watched too.

"Cute."

Lianzhen nearly dropped the hammer.

Zhenyu looked toward Qiu.

"Thank you."

Lianzhen stared at him.

"That was not—"

"I know."

He smiled.

She looked away.

Ji almost laughed.

Almost.

By the end of the week, eleven permanent equipment systems were soul-bonded.

Ji's was ready.

Not bonded.

Xuanye's was not.

Everyone agreed that this was probably his fault.

He accepted the accusation without concern.

The Ninefold Resonance had changed too.

Its relationship with equipment was no longer dangerous in the same way.

Temporary support stayed temporary.

Borrowed states remained shallow history.

True bearer adaptations could become permanent.

The equipment remembered enough.

Forgot enough.

And most importantly, it no longer confused surviving something with becoming something.

Qinghe stood before the full model one evening.

Eleven bonded systems glowed faintly within their bearer structures.

Not anchors.

Never anchors.

Extensions of bearer identity.

"Next test."

Zhenyu looked up.

"Full power?"

"Yes."

Zhaoyan smiled.

"Finally."

Mu added:

"Bonded equipment."

Feng's smile matched his.

"Ninefold."

"Yes."

Canglan:

"Combat."

"Yes."

Lianzhen looked toward the unfinished Ji and Xuanye systems.

"Not yet."

Zhaoyan groaned.

Qinghe nodded.

"She is right."

"Everyone keeps saying that lately."

Lianzhen smiled.

"Growth."

"No."

Ji looked toward her own equipment foundation.

Ready to bond.

Waiting.

Then toward Xuanye.

His problem remained on the forge table.

A dark cluster of materials that had survived every test while answering none of them.

Ji smiled.

"What?"

He asked it immediately.

"Nothing."

"You are looking at my equipment."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because mine works."

"Not bonded."

"Details."

"Important details."

Ji stepped closer.

"You are jealous."

"No."

"Obviously."

"No."

Canglan, without looking up from his spear, said:

"Yes."

Xuanye closed his eyes.

Ji laughed.

Around them, eleven permanent equipment systems rested with eleven bearers.

Not finished forever.

That concept no longer existed.

Finished enough to begin.

Two remained.

Then combat.

Then Embodiment.

Then the Ninefold under everything they could actually do to it.

Then whatever failed next.

Ji looked around the forge.

Weeks ago, they had been trying to make things strong enough not to break.

Now they were teaching permanent things what deserved to remain.

That seemed harder.

It was also probably why they finally had a chance.
