Chapter 5 - System Class? 5

Morning came like it owed me nothing.

Sun through the blinds. Fridge humming. The diploma still in the jacket on the chair. Dad's truck was still a state away. No Principal Smith. No alley. Just a Tuesday that the other forty-seven versions of me had never lived long enough to see.

I ate cereal that tasted like cardboard and victory. Showered. Stood in front of the mirror and checked the place the Echo had opened my shoulder. Skin. No scar. The Trait had done its job while I slept.

Then I sat at the kitchen table and opened the System on purpose.

Physical exertion (untrained): 2–12 EXP

First-time routes / broken habits: 5–15 EXP

Surviving a dawn you were not supposed to see: 0 EXP. The System does not pay you for living. That part is yours.

Dungeon Keys:

Alley That Remembers — Cleared

Empty Classroom — Condition: stay after hours with intent. School is closed for summer. Condition unmet.

Long Way Home — Condition: take a route you have never died on. Available.

Other functions that had been grayed out until Level 4:

Inventory — 8 slots. Currently: notebook, pen, rusted-pipe memory (not an item), Skill Book (locked).

Quest Log — First Night (updated: survive dawn — complete). Hidden objective complete.

Shadow Attendance — 3 watching. They do not explain themselves.

Class Seed — Ready.

I spent an hour testing the edges.

Washing the same plate twice gave almost nothing the second time. The System wanted change, not repetition. Walking to the corner store the way I always had given 1 EXP. Cutting through the park I had never used as a corpse gave 11 and a flicker toward the Long Way Home key.

Push-ups still worked. So did writing the deaths in order until my hand cramped. Will ticked when I forced myself to remember the curb-stomp instead of flinching away from it.

[+3 EXP]

Will check: stable.

No map of the city. No shop. No gacha. The System was not generous. It was a crack that happened to have menus. Mundane work for fragments. Dungeons for the rest. The real Laundry was still out there treating murder like a dry-cleaning errand.

I could live with that.

Afternoon. I took the long way around the block twice, bought nothing, came home, and sat on the bed with the Class Seed window open.

[Class Selection]

Three seeds had grown from the clear and the Trait. All of them bent toward the same three things the loops had burned into me: get there first, put the blood back, refuse to stay down.

Option A — [Scarpace Adept]

Speed first. Healing as afterthought. Will as fuel for sprint skills. Fragile if you stand still.

Option B — [Adamant Recoverant]

Healing first. Speed secondary. Will locks wounds closed. Slow to start a fight.

Option C — [Refusal Pulse]

Will is the core. Speed and healing both scale off it.

Movement haste rises with Will.

Blood returns to the body faster while you are moving toward a marked target or away from a finished death.

Control effects (silence, bind, "shush") have a chance to fail equal to Will.

Passive: Pulse Step — short burst in a direction you have died before. Cooldown measured in heartbeats.

I did not need to think long.

I had never been the strongest in the room. I had been the one who kept coming back with a headache and a list. Speed to not be where the hand was. Healing so the hole was not the end of the sentence. Will so the next loop—if there was one—I still knew my own name.

I selected C.

[Class acquired: Refusal Pulse]

[Spotless Intent (Incomplete) can now be learned.]

[New Skills]

Pulse Step (Active) — Dash along a remembered death-line. 3 heartbeat cooldown.

Returning Tide (Passive) — While moving, regenerate a sliver of lost blood and close minor wounds.

Iron Quiet (Passive) — Will contests forced silence and body-lock.

The unfinished book opened in Inventory by itself. One page.

He does not get dirty because he never lets the work touch him.

You will get dirty. That is the point.

I closed the window.

Evening next. Same house. Same empty driveway. Revenge Mark still tugging six kilometers out, lazy, like Laundry had somewhere better to be.

I stood in the hallway and used Pulse Step toward the front door—along the line of a version of me that had once run home screaming.

The world skipped a half-meter. My stomach caught up a second later. The cut on my knuckle from the pipe, the one the Trait had almost finished, sealed the rest of the way while I was still moving.

[+2 EXP]

Returning Tide: active.

I wrote one line in the notebook before I went to look up bus routes I had never died on.

Class is Refusal Pulse. I am not the laundry. I am the stain that will not come out.

The Shadows in the corner did not clap. They never did.

The System did not congratulate me either.

It just waited for the next mundane thing, the next key, and the 99 percent that still did not know my name.
