She'd asked the question while dumping heavy loads of exposition into his lap, and he sat with it for a moment quietly.
He liked when things were straightforward and not overly complex. He didn't like to be involved with powerful monsters he had no chance against far too early in the game. But existence had never been fair enough to give him just the right adversity at exactly the right time. It hadn't worked that way once across his entire existence, and it wasn't going to start now.
If there were levels to existence, a Level 1 Hunter never held the guarantee that they'd always meet a Level 2 or 3 monster manageable enough for them to overcome. They might meet a Level 100 monster and be utterly curbstomped, and existence wouldn't apologize for the mismatch. Existence had never apologized. Existence had no language for apology!
Noah had never had any guarantees that something similar wouldn't happen to him. That was just how existence worked.
