Chapter 23 - The Doggy Door

Victor's statement kicked Jacen and I into gear. "I'm fine, I promise." I said as I turned to Jacen. "Okay, then, let's get moving." Jacen said. We went outside as we began focusing on the distortions in the air, attempting to locate the nearest rift between our world and the world of, "hopefully," the Anasazi Tribe. Victor began to explain, "The spots around the world where physics doesn't seem to work properly are areas with larger portals, the gravity from the other plains leaks from the other worlds, and the different gravitational pulls cause distorted frames of time. Most people can't just walk through the portals, but those that can walk through naturally are where stories of alien abductions and other similar things come from. The distortions you can see now are waves of life energy. The Chinese call it chi, the Lakota called it Wakan Tanka and the Iroquois call it Orenda, but no matter what you call it, it flows towards the portals. I believe that the life energy that leaks from our bodies is naturally drawn to the other plains of existence by the lack of life inside of them, forcing tares or rifts in the fabric of reality. The energy from populated plains cuts through the fabric of reality filling the unoccupied plains with life energy, in order to attempt to generate life. Or at least that is what I believe is the reason. I also believe that is the reason that the portals all go to one place upon entering, but trying to come back is so hard. I believe that the energy from all the populated plains cuts through the fabric of reality in roughly the same spot in each universe, compounding like a river, pushing everything that gets into the stream along as it is washed further down, landing in one of the driest unpopulated plains. Then, when trying to get back, you have to fight your way back up stream, and it is easy to end up going through the wrong inlet." Jacen and I just stared at Victor for a moment as we processed the mass of information and theories about the rifts, their origins, and functionality. "What?" Victor asked in an incredulous manner. "Nothing, we were just processing what all you said." Jacen and I both said. I continued, "It's just a lot of information and in depth information at that. Not to mention that the information you gave is about the very fabric of not just our reality, but also the fabric of the entire multiverse. It's just not something people usually just drop on someone else, especially not so casually." Victor explained, "I'm sorry, it's just nice having people that are interested in the things I have been telling you. And I figured that you might be interested in more of my observations now that you have seen that some of what I've claimed is validated to some degree." "No, Victor, it's ok, I just wasn't prepared for such a profound revelation. But everything was relevant, and important to the current situation. It's just not something people usually think about, but I guess you had a decent amount of time to acclimate to the information and it just seems like another casual conversation." I'm not sure if my explanation made anything better for Victor or of it just made things worse as he mostly stayed quiet after that save for a few moments of observation in the direction of the life energy direction of flow. It wasn't an exact science, the energies in the air flowed like currents in the ocean, some fast, some slow, some more direct, others making erratic turns and swirls that did little more than waste time. The energy also seemed to change direction sometimes, seemingly being pulled by two or more portals in close proximity to the sources of them. We found several small portals, but nothing that was seemingly large enough to actually travel through. They might have been large enough for some squirrels to fit through, but nothing of a suitable size for our intended passage to the other plains of existence. We followed stream after stream of energy to many different portals, none of which met the expectations of our little trio. We searched hi and low for any signs of a portal large enough for us to fit through, but were unfortunately not finding much of anything. It even got to the point that Jacen and I shifted, me to my werewolf form and him to the form of the sunfox. I carried Victor on my back, and we ran, blazing across the country side in a blur, not that anyone could see us anyway. We practically flew from portal to portal before finally finding something that might maybe just be able work. It was small, but not impossible to fit through in our human forms. We would have to crawl through on our hands and knees like a couple of dogs. "Well, that's not too odd of a situation for Jacen and I, but Victor had a bit more difficulty as he wasn't entirely ocustom to crawling about on the ground, especially not in order to squeeze through a tight space like what we were planning to attempt because Victor had a severe case of claustrophobia. It was roughly the same size as a doggy door on one of those fancy houses. Small enough to be a giant pain in the tail, but big enough to just be usable. Jacen, being the largest of us decided to go first, showing Victor that we all should easily be able to fit through. The idea was solid, but when reality hit, I wound up having to push Victor through, because he stopped and tried to reach for the edge like he could hold onto the door frame of the universe, but his hands simply passed through the air futily. I, much stronger than Victor, pushed him through the, "doggy door portal," as we'd become used to calling it. Despite having an absolute fit in the moment, Victor calmed down quickly on the other side. It was actually quite amusing. One second he was flailing about, the next he was completely still, almost as though he had realized that hilarity of what just happened.
