Chapter 49 - Outpost

Chapter 49 – The Outpost

They changed direction at dawn.

East.

Away from Veyra.

Away from the road they had originally planned to take.

The decision didn't sit well with Elias.

"You're trusting a compass that belonged to Brook's father."

Crowley nodded.

"Yes."

"Even though you don't know what it's pointing toward."

"Correct."

Elias stared at him.

"That's reckless."

Crowley looked at Brook.

"Probably."

Brook shrugged.

"At least we're consistent."

Henry laughed.

Sera shook her head.

"You two are going to get us killed."

Crowley mounted his horse.

"Eventually."

They started east.

The forest became rougher as they traveled.

There were fewer paths.

More abandoned structures.

Old stone markers appeared along the roadside, each bearing symbols that had been deliberately scratched away.

Brook noticed one.

"What happened here?"

Elias examined it.

"Someone didn't want the name remembered."

"Why?"

"Because names have power."

Brook looked at him.

"That's cryptic."

"Most useful things are."

Brook rolled his eyes.

"Everyone outside talks like that."

Sera laughed.

"You're becoming one of them."

"I'm not."

Crowley glanced back.

"Give it time."

Brook smiled.

"Not you too."

For a while, the journey was peaceful.

They crossed a shallow river.

Stopped to rest beneath a massive tree.

Found wild fruit growing along the road.

It was almost ordinary.

Almost.

Then they saw the first bodies.

Three men.

Hanging from the branches of an old tree.

Henry stopped.

Sera looked away.

Brook didn't.

He studied them.

There were no obvious wounds.

No blood.

No weapons.

Just three dead men.

Elias looked disturbed.

"We should keep moving."

Brook looked at him.

"Who killed them?"

"I don't know."

Crowley examined the tree.

"They weren't killed here."

Henry frowned.

"How can you tell?"

Crowley pointed toward the ground.

"No footprints."

Brook looked closer.

The ground beneath the tree was untouched.

"Then how did they get here?"

Crowley looked upward.

"They were dropped."

Henry looked into the branches.

"From where?"

Crowley didn't answer.

Brook felt the third Source react.

A cold sensation moved through his chest.

He looked at the bodies.

For the briefest moment, he could hear something.

Whispers.

Not words.

Just voices.

Brook stepped backward.

Sera noticed.

"Brook?"

"I'm fine."

She stared at him.

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

He turned away from the bodies.

He didn't tell her.

He didn't tell anyone.

The voices continued for another few seconds.

Then stopped.

Brook pulled his sleeve down.

The third Source had gone quiet.

By late afternoon, they reached the ruins.

The trees opened into a massive valley.

At the center stood a stone fortress.

It had been partially destroyed.

Its towers had collapsed.

The walls were covered in vines.

But the symbol above the entrance was still visible.

A circle divided into three sections.

Brook recognized it immediately.

"Xcution."

Henry looked at Crowley.

"You said this was an outpost."

"It was."

"What happened?"

Crowley stared at the fortress.

"They abandoned it."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Elias laughed.

"That's the first time I've heard you say that."

Crowley didn't respond.

Brook dismounted.

"Then let's find out."

They approached the entrance.

The massive doors were already open.

Inside was darkness.

Sera lit a small flame in her hand.

They entered.

The air smelled old.

Not rotten.

Just old.

Dust covered the floors.

Broken furniture lay scattered across the halls.

There were weapons.

Books.

Empty containers.

And dozens of symbols carved into the walls.

Brook ran his fingers over one.

"How old is this place?"

Crowley looked around.

"Older than the Walls."

Henry stared at him.

"Xcution existed before the Walls?"

"Yes."

Brook looked at Crowley.

"Who were they?"

Crowley didn't answer.

"Why?"

Crowley walked deeper into the building.

"Because the name has been used by different groups."

Brook followed.

"So this isn't the same Xcution?"

"No."

"Then what was this one?"

Crowley stopped.

"An organization that studied the Sources."

Brook looked around.

"Why?"

"To understand them."

"Did they?"

Crowley looked at him.

"They thought they did."

Brook noticed something on the wall.

Six symbols.

Each had been crossed out.

Except one.

The symbol for Soul.

Brook stared.

"Why is that one different?"

Crowley approached.

His expression became serious.

"I don't know."

Brook frowned.

"You just said they studied the Sources."

"I did."

"Then you should know."

Crowley looked at the carving.

"I wasn't here."

Brook studied him.

For some reason, he believed him.

That was becoming rare.

They found a large chamber at the center of the fortress.

There was a table covered in old papers.

Most had decayed.

Some remained readable.

Henry picked one up.

"These are records."

Sera leaned over.

"About the Sources?"

Henry nodded.

Brook approached.

The document described the normal rules of Source possession.

One Source.

One vessel.

One connection.

Brook read silently.

Then he stopped.

"There's something here."

Henry looked at him.

"What?"

Brook pointed.

A paragraph had been underlined.

No human vessel has ever successfully carried more than one Source.

Brook looked at Crowley.

"Then how am I doing it?"

Crowley didn't answer.

Another line followed.

Multiple Source integration results in immediate biological collapse.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Biological."

He looked at the paper again.

"Why would they describe the vessel biologically?"

Crowley remained silent.

Sera looked between them.

"Brook…"

Brook continued reading.

The next page had been torn out.

Henry searched the table.

"There's more."

He found a second document.

The first sentence was almost completely destroyed.

Only a few words remained.

Subject was created…

Brook froze.

He grabbed the paper.

"What?"

The next line was missing.

Henry turned it over.

Nothing.

Brook looked at Crowley.

"Created?"

Crowley didn't respond.

Brook's heart began beating faster.

"Who creates a Source vessel?"

No answer.

He looked around the room.

There were diagrams.

Human anatomy.

Unknown symbols.

Genetic markings.

Brook stared.

"This isn't a study."

Sera stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Brook looked at the drawings.

"They were trying to make something."

Henry looked at Crowley.

"Something like Brook."

Crowley's expression hardened.

"Maybe."

Brook looked at him.

"You knew."

"No."

"You suspected."

Crowley hesitated.

"Yes."

Brook's anger rose.

"You've known something was wrong with me since we left the Wall."

"I knew you were different."

"How different?"

Crowley looked directly at him.

"I didn't know."

Brook stepped closer.

"Then start telling me the truth."

Crowley didn't move.

"I am."

Brook stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Brook walked away.

He wasn't angry enough to shout.

That bothered him.

He should have been furious.

Instead, he simply felt tired.

Sera found Brook later.

He was standing in a corridor looking through an old window.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

"You keep saying that."

Brook smiled.

"I know."

She leaned against the wall.

"You don't have to talk."

"Good."

"But I'm staying."

Brook looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because we're family."

The word hit him harder than she expected.

Brook looked away.

"Family."

"Yeah."

He smiled faintly.

"That's what Henry said."

Sera smiled.

"He's right."

Brook nodded.

For a moment, the emptiness disappeared.

He felt something.

Not much.

But enough.

He looked at Sera.

"Thanks."

She smiled.

"Anytime."

That evening, Crowley explored the lower levels alone.

He found an old iron door.

It opened with a key he had carried for years.

Inside was a small chamber.

A single chair.

A table.

And a wall covered in names.

Crowley stared at them.

Some he recognized.

Some he didn't.

At the center was one name.

PROJECT ANOMALY

Below it:

SUBJECT: B-01

Crowley's expression changed.

He stepped closer.

A second line appeared beneath the name.

Genetic compatibility: Six-source integration.

Crowley whispered:

"Brook."

A sound came from behind him.

Crowley turned.

The room was empty.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"You weren't supposed to find that yet."

Crowley drew his sword.

"Who are you?"

A shadow moved.

Crowley attacked.

His blade passed through empty air.

The voice laughed.

"You really haven't changed."

Crowley stood still.

"Show yourself."

"No."

"Then speak."

A pause.

"The boy isn't the only anomaly."

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Silence.

Then the voice whispered:

"There were others."

Crowley's grip tightened.

"How many?"

"Enough to prove the experiment worked."

Crowley stared into the darkness.

"And Brook?"

Another pause.

"He wasn't the first."

The door slammed shut.

Crowley stood alone.

For the first time in years…

he looked genuinely shaken.

Outside, Brook stood beneath the night sky.

Henry and Sera were arguing over who had taken the last piece of food.

Elias was trying to sleep.

Brook listened to them.

He smiled.

He didn't feel as much as he used to.

He knew that now.

But he still wanted to be there.

That had to mean something.

He looked toward the fortress.

He didn't know what was waiting inside.

He didn't know who had created the anomaly.

He didn't know why he could carry three Sources.

And he didn't know how many people had existed before him.

But he knew one thing.

He was going to find out.

Inside the fortress, Crowley stood before the old records.

He looked at the name again.

SUBJECT: B-01

Then beneath it, almost hidden under years of dust, was another notation.

STATUS: SUCCESSFUL

Crowley stared.

His expression darkened.

Because Brook had never been an accident.

Someone had made him.

And whatever that person had intended…

they had succeeded.
