Chapter 206 - What Hutena Saw

Chapter 206 — What Hutena Saw

Hutena had always believed the future made noise.

Not literal noise.

Not voices.

Not words whispered into her ears by some invisible being.

The future had a rhythm.

A pressure.

A sensation that arrived before the vision itself.

Sometimes it felt like standing beside a river and knowing which way the water would flow.

Sometimes it felt like a thousand doors opening at once.

Sometimes it was painfully clear.

A battlefield.

A death.

A meeting.

A city burning.

A child growing old.

A hand reaching for another hand.

She never knew why certain things appeared.

She only knew that they did.

And when the future changed, she felt it.

A tremor.

A distortion.

A sudden emptiness where something had been.

But what happened when Heaven opened above Asteria was different.

The future didn't change.

It disappeared.

Hutena stood in the palace courtyard with Sera's arm still around her.

Her breathing was shallow.

Her eyes remained fixed on the figure who had descended from the sky.

Six wings.

White light.

A presence that made the Earth itself recoil.

The stranger stood several meters away from Brook.

Hutena couldn't hear the words being exchanged.

She could barely hear the people around her.

Her entire mind was somewhere else.

Somewhere beyond the present.

She was looking forward.

And there was nothing there.

Hutena blinked.

The courtyard disappeared.

A road.

A long road stretching into darkness.

Brook was walking along it.

Alone.

Hutena watched from somewhere above.

She couldn't move.

She couldn't speak.

Brook stopped.

He looked toward something in the distance.

A figure.

Hutena tried to see its face.

Nothing.

The vision changed.

Brook was standing in Asteria.

Sera was beside him.

Henry was behind him.

Crowley stood several steps away.

Tala was looking toward the sky.

Everything was exactly where it should have been.

Then the sky opened.

The winged figure appeared.

Hutena waited.

She knew this moment.

She had seen pieces of it before.

Brook would look upward.

The figure would descend.

Something would happen.

Something important.

Something that would change everything.

She waited for the future to continue.

It didn't.

The vision froze.

Brook remained standing.

The wings remained open.

The sky remained split.

Nothing moved.

Nothing happened.

Hutena frowned.

"Continue."

The future didn't listen.

She tried again.

"Show me what happens."

Nothing.

She reached deeper.

The vision shattered.

Hutena opened her eyes.

She was back in Asteria.

Sera was still holding her.

"Hutena?"

Hutena didn't answer.

Sera shook her gently.

"Hutena."

"I saw it."

"What?"

"The moment."

Sera frowned.

"What moment?"

Hutena looked toward Brook.

"The one after this."

Sera followed her gaze.

"What happens?"

Hutena swallowed.

"I don't know."

That frightened Sera.

"You don't know?"

Hutena shook her head.

"I saw the moment."

"Then what did you see?"

Hutena looked at the stranger.

"I saw him arrive."

"That's already happening."

"I know."

"Then what is different?"

Hutena's expression tightened.

"I couldn't hear it."

Sera stared.

"What?"

"The future showed me this moment."

Hutena pointed toward Brook.

"This exact moment."

Then toward the stranger.

"And him."

Then toward the open sky.

"But when they spoke…"

She stopped.

Her voice became quieter.

"I heard nothing."

The present blurred again.

Hutena's vision returned.

She was somewhere else.

Not Asteria.

Not Heaven.

Not Earth.

A place without a sky.

Brook stood in the center.

The stranger stood opposite him.

Their faces were impossible to see.

Hutena could see their mouths moving.

But there was no sound.

She stepped closer.

Nothing.

She tried to force the vision to reveal the words.

Still nothing.

Then she saw Brook turn.

He wasn't looking at the stranger anymore.

He was looking directly at her.

Hutena froze.

Brook's eyes were different.

Older.

Tired.

Almost empty.

He reached toward her.

Hutena stepped back.

The entire vision cracked.

Behind Brook stood five figures.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

Someone else.

And—

nothing.

The fifth position was empty.

Not occupied by darkness.

Not hidden.

Empty.

Hutena stared.

She had seen empty places before.

But this wasn't an empty space.

It was an absence.

As though reality itself had decided that something should never have existed there.

The vision collapsed.

Hutena gasped.

She nearly fell.

Sera caught her.

"Easy."

Hutena grabbed Sera's arm.

"Don't let me sleep."

Sera frowned.

"I wasn't planning to."

"If I close my eyes…"

"What?"

"I'll see it again."

Sera looked toward Brook.

"What did you see?"

Hutena hesitated.

She didn't know how much she could say.

Some visions were dangerous to describe.

Not because speaking them caused them to happen.

Because speaking them made them feel more real.

And Hutena had learned that some futures became stronger when given a name.

"I saw Brook."

Sera nodded.

"That doesn't sound unusual."

"He was alone."

Sera's expression changed.

Hutena continued.

"He wasn't fighting."

"Then what was he doing?"

"Walking."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Who was with him?"

Hutena looked toward the stranger.

"No one."

The vision returned without warning.

Hutena saw Brook again.

This time—

he was standing in a forest.

The trees were enormous.

Their roots twisted across the ground.

The sky was dark.

Brook touched one of the trees.

The entire forest moved.

Hutena saw the Earth respond.

Then she saw a woman.

Not Tala.

Someone older.

She stood behind Brook.

Her face was hidden.

Her hair appeared to be made from roots.

Hutena tried to approach.

The woman turned.

Hutena couldn't see her face.

But she knew—

this was important.

Then the woman looked toward the sky.

Heaven.

She looked toward the ground.

Earth.

Then back toward Brook.

She raised one hand.

The future disappeared.

Hutena opened her eyes.

She was trembling.

Tala noticed.

"What did you see?"

Hutena looked at her.

For several seconds, she couldn't answer.

Then:

"Someone else."

Tala's expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Was she human?"

"I don't know."

"An angel?"

"No."

"A demon?"

"No."

Tala stared.

Hutena's voice became quieter.

"She felt like the Earth."

Tala went completely still.

Brook noticed.

"What?"

Hutena looked at him.

"Nothing."

Brook frowned.

"You're terrible at that too."

Tala didn't smile.

Hutena looked away.

She wasn't ready.

Not yet.

Then she saw the stranger again.

The future pulled her back.

He was standing beside Brook.

The sky remained open.

Michael was there.

Lucifer was there.

Death was there.

But this time—

Hutena could see something else.

The stranger looked toward Brook.

His expression was warm.

Almost relieved.

Brook stared at him.

Confused.

Suspicious.

Afraid.

Then—

the stranger spoke.

Hutena watched his lips.

Nothing.

She tried again.

Nothing.

She moved closer.

Still nothing.

She could see the words.

She could see Brook's reaction.

She could see Michael reacting inside him.

She could see Lucifer smiling.

She could see Death remaining apart.

But the sound was gone.

Hutena understood.

This wasn't an incomplete vision.

It was being hidden from her.

The future was allowing her to see the moment—

but refusing to let her hear it.

Why?

She didn't know.

She pushed harder.

The vision resisted.

Hutena forced herself deeper.

The world around her began cracking.

She saw the stranger's mouth move.

Brook's eyes widened.

Michael opened his eyes.

Lucifer smiled.

Then—

Hutena heard one word.

Barely.

A whisper.

"Brother."

Hutena froze.

The vision shattered.

She returned to Asteria violently.

Her body jerked.

Sera nearly lost her grip.

"Hutena!"

Hutena gasped.

Her eyes were wide.

She looked at Brook.

Then at the stranger.

Then back at Brook.

"What?"

Sera stared at her.

"You said something."

Hutena shook her head.

"No."

"You said a word."

"I…"

Hutena couldn't finish.

She looked at Brook again.

He was still standing there.

Still unaware.

Still waiting for answers.

The stranger was looking at him.

Something inside Hutena trembled.

She had heard the word.

Only once.

Only for a second.

And yet—

it felt like the most important sound the future had ever allowed her to hear.

Brother.

But there was something else.

She had seen three reactions inside Brook.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

Only two had reacted to the stranger.

Death had remained apart.

Hutena didn't understand why.

But the future had made the distinction clear.

Michael and Lucifer belonged to something connected to the stranger.

Death did not.

And Brook—

Brook stood between them.

Hutena looked forward again.

She forced herself to see beyond the moment.

The future resisted.

She pushed.

A new path appeared.

Brook and the stranger walking through Asteria.

Another.

Brook and the stranger fighting.

Another.

The stranger standing beside Xcution.

Another.

The stranger standing against them.

Another.

Brook alone.

Another.

Brook surrounded by six figures.

Hutena's breath caught.

Six.

She counted.

Brook.

Sera.

Henry.

Crowley.

The stranger.

And—

someone else.

A woman.

Her face was completely hidden.

Hutena tried to see it.

The future turned away.

"No."

She pushed harder.

The faceless woman remained faceless.

Hutena tried another path.

The woman was gone.

She tried another.

A sword appeared.

She tried another.

Nothing.

She tried another.

Brook stood alone.

Hutena pulled herself out.

She was breathing heavily.

Tala approached.

"You went too far."

Hutena nodded.

"I know."

"What did you see?"

Hutena looked at Brook.

"Possibilities."

"How many?"

"Too many."

Tala understood.

"Because of him."

Hutena nodded.

"Because of Brook."

Hutena had once believed fate was a straight line.

Then she learned it was a tree.

Every decision created branches.

Every death removed one.

Every unexpected action created another.

But Brook wasn't creating branches.

He was cutting through them.

His existence was making futures disappear and reappear in ways she couldn't predict.

And now—

the arrival from Heaven had made it worse.

Hutena looked toward the open sky.

The future had never been this quiet.

She could see the moment.

She could see the people.

She could see the wings.

She could see Brook.

She could see the two ancient presences inside him reacting.

But she could not hear the most important words.

She had only heard one.

Brother.

And that single word had been enough to tell her something.

The man standing before Brook wasn't simply an angel.

He wasn't simply a messenger.

He wasn't simply someone searching for Michael.

He was connected to something inside Brook.

Something older than Brook's understanding.

Something that had been waiting.

Hutena looked at Brook again.

He was still asking questions.

Still searching for answers.

Still unaware of how much the future had already changed around him.

Hutena almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then she remembered what she had seen.

Brook walking alone.

Brook disappearing from every future.

Brook standing among six figures.

Brook covered in blood.

Brook holding something she couldn't identify.

And the empty place where the fifth figure should have been.

She closed her eyes.

The future whispered.

Not in words.

In possibilities.

Hutena opened them again.

The stranger looked toward Brook.

Brook looked back.

The sky remained open.

And Hutena finally understood the cruelest part of her gift.

She could see what was coming.

But sometimes—

the future showed her exactly enough to make her afraid.

Never enough to make her safe.
