Chapter 10 - Instincts

Gray's POV

The morning sun filtered through the blinds of my bedroom, casting warm slats across the floor. My hands were trembling slightly as I tied my hair back, trying to focus. Today was "girl time," as Zoey had gleefully dubbed it yesterday. But beneath her exuberance, I could still feel the tension from Zodiac's presence lingering like a shadow, his amber eyes etched into my memory. I wasn't sure whether I was more nervous about seeing him again or about being out in public without his—or Capricorn's—ever-watchful gaze.

Zoey burst into my room before I could even finish adjusting my shoes. "Let's go, Gray! You're going to be fabulous today!" she announced, her grin radiant. "And don't worry, I've already got the day planned. Shoes, clothes, a little pampering—everything a Luna deserves."

I hesitated, glancing at the mirror. "I don't even know if I deserve… all of this," I admitted softly.

Zoey placed a firm hand on my shoulder. "Gray, listen to me. You do. And even if you don't think so, today isn't about deserving—it's about living a little. You've been cooped up, stressed, terrified of stepping on the wrong foot around Zodiac. Today, we're stepping on our own feet, and we're going to have fun doing it."

I took a deep breath, letting her energy seep into me. Maybe she was right. Maybe it was time to claim a small piece of normalcy in the chaos of my life.

The drive to the boutique was lively. Zoey sang along to the radio, punctuating every chorus with exaggerated dance moves that made me laugh despite the nervous pit in my stomach. It felt absurdly freeing to be in a car, away from Zodiac and Griffin and the mansion's suffocating tension. I allowed myself a tentative smile.

The boutique was a small, sunlit haven tucked between larger stores, and Zoey practically dragged me inside. The air smelled faintly of vanilla and sandalwood, a comforting scent that reminded me of safer, simpler times. The moment we entered, Zoey's eyes lit up. "Shoes, Gray! Shoes first! Come on, try these on!"

I laughed nervously. "I don't know if—"

"No arguments. Shoes first. Rules are rules," Zoey declared with mock severity. She handed me a sleek pair of black ankle boots. "Go on, try them. You'll see how good they look on you."

I slipped them on, wiggling my toes. They were surprisingly comfortable. Zoey clapped her hands. "See? Perfect. Now that's step one of your transformation today."

As we wandered the boutique, Zoey pointed out combinations of outfits and accessories, her chatter a constant stream of commentary and advice. I found myself relaxing, laughing at her jokes, and even trying on a few daring pieces I never would have considered before.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, Zodiac's presence lingered, a quiet hum of tension. I knew he wouldn't be far away, even if he hadn't said anything. Capricorn's wolf growled faintly at the idea of me enjoying myself, still protective and wary. I tried to push the thought aside. This was my day, my little bubble of freedom.

By mid-afternoon, we had a small pile of purchases and had even indulged in coffee and pastries at a nearby café. I could feel a shift inside me, a tiny spark of confidence building with each passing moment. Zoey had this uncanny ability to make the world seem less threatening, less overwhelming, and for that brief window of time, I allowed myself to believe I could be happy, even just a little.

It was on our way back to the car that I sensed the subtle change in the air. My wolf, Virgo, pricked up, and Capricorn's growl rumbled like distant thunder. I froze, sensing something I couldn't immediately name.

Zoey followed my gaze, frowning. "What is it?"

Before I could answer, a sleek black car pulled up beside us. The window rolled down, revealing Zodiac's amber eyes, intense and unreadable. Griffin sat beside him, silent, his piercing gaze locked on me. My stomach dropped, and for a moment, I felt the old familiar fear curling inside me.

Zoey, undeterred, waved cheerfully. "Hey! Having fun?"

Zodiac's eyes flicked to her briefly before settling on me. His jaw was set, his posture commanding, and I could feel the surge of raw energy radiating from him even from across the street. Capricorn snarled in frustration at the mere presence of his Alpha, tense and alert.

I forced myself to step forward, lifting my chin. "I'm fine," I said evenly, though my pulse raced.

Zodiac's lips twitched into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "I can see that," he said softly, voice carrying a low rumble. "But I want to make sure you're okay."

Griffin's gaze softened slightly, and I sensed a quiet reassurance from him. He didn't speak, but the calm energy radiating from him grounded me.

Zoey, ever the bridge between tension and relief, clapped her hands. "Okay, boys. Step back. Gray's mine for the day. But I guess a short ride isn't a bad thing."

Zodiac's eyes lingered on me, intense and unreadable, before he nodded slightly. "Ten minutes," he said, his tone both warning and promise.

The ride back to the mansion was quiet, thick with unspoken tension. Zodiac's wolf hovered near the surface, powerful and restrained. Capricorn's presence was equally strong, growling low at Zodiac's restraint, warning me to tread carefully.

When we arrived, Zoey practically shoved me toward the door. "Gray, you survived! You conquered! Now, get ready for the next part of our day. Spa time. You deserve it."

I hesitated at the threshold, glancing back at Zodiac. He watched me with unreadable eyes, and for a moment, I wondered if I could ever truly navigate this world, this tangled web of emotions and instincts.

Zodiac's voice, low and intimate, broke through my thoughts. "You're stronger than you realize, Gray. Don't forget that."

I swallowed hard, the weight of his words settling over me like a shroud. "I'll try," I whispered.

And for the first time, I felt a flicker of hope that maybe, with time, patience, and guidance from Zoey—and perhaps even Zodiac—I could reclaim a part of my life that had been overshadowed by fear, confusion, and the overwhelming pull of a bond I didn't fully understand.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting golden light over the mansion, I knew this was only the beginning. The real challenge wasn't the shopping, or the coffee, or even the small victories. It was navigating the storm that was Zodiac—his fire, his possessiveness, and the undeniable pull of a mate bond that neither of us fully controlled.

And deep down, I wondered if I was ready for the storm.
