Alex immediately ran onto the battlefield toward the unconscious Gardevoir, already holding a Hyper Potion in his hand.
He carefully treated her injuries before gently returning her to her Poké Ball with a smile. Alex said quietly. "You did more than enough,"
After confirming that Gardevoir had been recalled, the referee looked toward Alex and announced, "Participant Alex, you have thirty seconds to send out your next Pokémon."
Alex had already made his decision. He picked up a plain-looking Poké Ball from his belt and threw it into the arena.
A flash of white light erupted from the Poké Ball. When it faded, a small purple Ditto appeared on the battlefield.
It was the first time Alex had used Ditto during the tournament.

Alex couldn't imagine a better situation for Ditto than this one.
Even though it was at a five-level disadvantage against Altaria, the Altaria—now down to just 10% HP—couldn't withstand even a single move from the transformed Ditto.
And once Ditto defeated Altaria, it could effectively use the broken move Perish Song against the rest of Winona's Pokémon.
The referee raised his hand and shouted, "3, 2, 1, Go!"
Ditto immediately activated its Imposter ability and instantly transformed into Altaria.
At the same time, Alex telepathically told Ditto, "Use Dazzling Gleam."
Ditto was the only one of Alex's Pokémon that didn't receive short codenames for moves or move sequences; instead, Alex had to issue standard commands.
The reason was obvious: Ditto could theoretically possess any move, and since Alex couldn't know beforehand which moves a future opponent at the Expert or Master Rank might have, he couldn't plan ahead.
Alex had tried a few tests using codenames that instructed Ditto to use an effective type Master Rank move as a codename, but there were issues.
Ditto didn't automatically know which moves were best to use; it always needed a second or two to figure out which type of moves its opponent was weak against.
It was simply too difficult and complicated, so Alex decided not to use codename commands for Ditto for the time being.
But that didn't mean Alex had given up on training Ditto in tactics.
Alex used the time to explain to Ditto when to use specific moves, aiming to improve its understanding of moves—just as he did with all his Pokémon—so it could fight intelligently even without his guidance.
Altaria began preparing a move without a word from Winona, which impressed Alex a little.
It seemed this Altaria had a vast amount of experience and tactical training; otherwise, Winona wouldn't have allowed it to make its own decisions at this moment.
Although Alex was slightly impressed, he knew that this slight difference in timing wouldn't matter in the end.
Altaria finished its move first and used Dragon Claw—her best option.
Ditto, having transformed into an Altaria, tried to dodge but failed and was struck by the attack. It sustained heavy damage, leaving it with less than 20% of its HP.
Ignoring the pain, Ditto unleashed the move it had just finished preparing. It used Dazzling Gleam.
Although Altaria tried to dodge, the move's area of effect was too wide, and it took the hit.
Altaria fell unconscious to the ground.
Winona quickly ran to her Pokémon and gently healed it with a Hyper Potion, whispering, "Good work."
The referee allowed her thirty seconds, but Winona sent out her next Pokémon after only ten.

Seeing Winona call out her weakest Pokémon next, Alex realized she had figured out his rather obvious plan.
He wasn't surprised that she had spotted it so quickly.
The referee raised his hand and shouted, "3, 2, 1, Go!"
For the first time in the match, Winona called out, "Show 2"—a command.
Alex, on the other hand, said nothing; he trusted Ditto to understand which move to use next.
He was confident that, after so much tactical training, Ditto would know exactly which move was best for the situation.
Ditto didn't hesitate and immediately began preparing a move.
Noctowl tried to fly away from Ditto but wasn't fast enough; the two Pokémon were already within striking distance of each other.
Ditto finished first and used Perish Song—an move Noctowl couldn't dodge.
Noctowl took considerably longer but managed to complete his move as well: Moonblast. he struck Ditto, who had attempted to dodge it.
Ditto had planned to use Roost to heal the damage if he could doege this moves, but since it failed to dodge Noctowl's attack, that plan became moot.
It fell unconscious to the ground.
Alex quickly ran over to Ditto with a smile. As he healed it, he said, "Good job. You couldn't have done better."
The referee quickly signaled to Alex, reminding him that he had only thirty seconds to send out his next Pokémon.
Seeing that Alex didn't immediately send out his next Pokémon, Winona called out, "Hey, where's your pride? Is this how you want to win?"
Alex gave a faint smile as he replied, "Why, winning this way isn't anything new for me."
It didn't take long for Noctowl to collapse to the ground, unconscious, and since Alex took no more than thirty seconds to send out his next Pokémon, he didn't violate any rules.
