Chapter 2 - Did I just awaken consciousness?

"Do you think he saw us?" A boy sitting on a wooden chair scratched his head.

"He most probably did. I saw him giving the side-eye as he left" A hopeless voice answered to him.

"So, is it completed?" They both turned to a person standing in the corner of the room holding a book, staring intently into it's pages.

"We will have two newcomers today" The guy with the book answered, completely irrelevant to their question, as if not having listened to them at all.

"Again? That's quite fast. The gap time used to be much longer before" Another confused voice sounded.

"They are very important people I suppose. You better be prepared" The guy with the book spoke again, before closing the book and setting it aside on a nightstand at the corner.

----

Over there, Evand wrinkled his face with faint displeasure watching the guy who quickly slipped away after stuttering a few apologies about an accident and promising to send over some supplements.

So it was him, the guy that bumped into him at the dispenser.

Just how unlucky was he to get chain-electrocution from that guy and actually fall unconscious? He still felt like electricity was running through him, and sparks were flying out of his fingertips! On the contrary, that slippery guy looked completely fine. Does this even make sense?

He picked up the water and took another sip. The sooner this tingling goes away, the better.

Out of the infirmary, Yuan patted his chest a few times. Phew, he finally got away. Why did it seem like he said the wrong things right off the bat? Anyway, it's good that guy is fine. As long as he's careful enough and don't cause any troubles in the future, everything should be fine.

He wondered whether it was the right decision to come to the infirmary after all. He went back to the classroom that was almost empty, picked his bag and slung it over his shoulder. The last period was empty today as the teacher was absent, and he was planning to take advantage of this to sneak over the wall and head home early. Judging by the number of the empty seats, it seems he was not the only one with that idea.

The walls surrounding the school's back gate were old and weathered, with patches of overgrown vegetation providing convenient footholds for anyone attempting to climb them. On the way to the back gate, he was sure to avoid the main routes, making sure not to bump onto the disciplinary committee. The route was quite deserted, considering that there might be plenty of students today who might want to reach the back gate today, especially from their class.

Yuan had only taken a few steps when he discovered the reason for the "low population", with great regret. The disciplinary committee member was standing a few feet away, with a pen tapping the notebook in his hand, the batch representing the evening duty pinned firmly to his chest and reflecting the sun.

The disciplinary committee member had his back to Yuan's side, and given Yuan's slow and silent steps the committee member was yet to see him. Yuan quickly grabbed the opportunity to take a turn and ducked behind a tree with lush branches. He was just about to dash toward the next one when his foot caught on a root that had pushed its way above the soil, sending him sprawling face down, his head knocking on a nearby stone with a sharp knock.

The knocking sounds attracted the attention of the disciplinary committee member, who turned in Yuan's direction, searching for the source of the sound with suspicion. Therefore, Yuan had no choice but to stifle his cry of pain, and lay prone, suppressing the urge to rub his head, hoping that the member will not check the ground.

Fortunately, there were several bushes that were not properly maintained around the path, serving as a cover, and the committee member turned his attention back to the notebook with a yawn after failing to notice any students sneaking around.

Noticing that he avoided the immediate crisis, Yuan tried to get up, only to feel his vision going black with a sharp pain from his head. He even felt like there were ring golden spots floating around and couldn't help groaning in pain.

He once again tried to slowly sit-up, this time supporting his weight on the elbows, which only worsened the pain. He raised a hand to touch his head, carefully probing for anything sticky. Fortunately, his hands turned out clean except for some dirt, but unfortunately not only the pain in his head increased, but he also started hearing a slight ringing sound.

Desperate, Yuan supported himself against a nearby bush, his elbows scraped from earlier, and his ears ringing and thudding. His head was like split open, and he could swear he felt like something being poured into his split brain, cool, gooey and sluggish. Yuan closed his eyes dizzily.

When he opened them again, he discovered with a start that there seemed to be something extra in his brain, like extra memories ?

For the first time, he couldn't even care for the committee member and cursed out loud "what the h*ll!"

You're telling me that this world is a novel? And that I'm the main character of this freaking novel?! Yuan was beyond dumbfounded after probing roughly through his extra 'memories' that has been planted his brain, in a rather painful and non-desirable way.

So did I just awaken consciousness??
