'What did I miss?'
'Cali,' I reply. 'You've got remarkable timing as always.'
'Ha, ha,' her eyes shot open as she shouldered her way past me. 'Did you see that?!'
What I'd seen, I'd assumed, had been my imagination or a bit of dirt in my eye. But as Cali singled out the creature, I couldn't help but notice how its human-sized legs shuffled impossibly fast over the flat tarmac and especially how its four muscle-ripped arms waved from side to side as if searching for something to grab.
'Get that thing a basketball,' Cali shouted. 'Who covers two hundred and fifty yards in under three seconds?'
'Eight seconds, twelve, twelve and a half, fourteen and sixteen. Three of the other four were moving so slow that they still hadn't finished, and the fourth was hopping back and forth over the half-court line as if unable to pull its attention away. Kangaroos were known to be rather springy, though this hybrid seemed to add a low basketball IQ to that list of characteristics.
