CHAPTER 242
Ezekiel's chair scraped harshly against the floor as he shot halfway to his feet. His emerald eyes narrowed. "What?"
Astrid forced herself to continue before he could interrupt. "I was stabbed before I shifted to my human form." Her fingers unconsciously drifted to the center of her chest. "Afterward, it took my life."
Ezekiel's jaw tightened.
Astrid looked down at her hands. "Yet what had taken me was also what brought me back." She slowly turned toward Alistair. "Perchance…"
Alistair met her eyes and gave a small nod, then he turned to face Ezekiel. "It was a gamble." His voice was steady despite everything. "I didn't know if it would actually work. I wasn't bringing her back with certainty." He lowered his gaze. "There was no guarantee."
Astrid looked back at Ezekiel. "Then it is the hand of fate that shall decide."
Heavy silence followed. No one spoke for a moment.
