AFTER the first screenings of the movie played in several theaters, posts about it started filling up [Cyberspace]. Because it was an independent film, few well-known critics put out early reviews. But one of them did. Her name was Kristin Kirkwood, a film critic with a decent following who had been posting reviews of every movie Astrid had appeared in so far.


Kristin Kirkwood v: [<The Shadow Within> opens with a strong sequence that sets the tone immediately. It grips you from the start and establishes the kind of dread the film is aiming for. However, the middle act does lag. The investigation scenes lose some momentum and could have benefited from tighter editing.


But the film picks up again in the third act. The tension returns, and the payoff is worth the wait.
