Marshal Gu Ying seems to have suffered some kind of backlash after his contracted beast was killed. Though it didn't kill him, it had greatly affected his mortal vessel. If it was the original Gu Ying, he might be able to survive the backlash as most humans before contracting a beast would swore a vow especially for those who had signed an equal contract. The kamaitachi and the original Gu Ying had signed an equal contract and their lives are connected. The beast knew that his master had somehow changed because it didn't know that the soul inside its master's body had long been replaced.
