Chapter 74 - The network (3)

It didn't take long until Dario was called on by the woman. As he followed her Amelia stayed seated, looking at the falling snow through the window while silently sipping on her tea.

Although she should have been used to it by now the woman's blantant distrust of her seemed to have hit a nerve. Like yet another reminder of her true position.

In her frustration Amelia hadn't been able to keep herself from being a little bothersome. When the woman had brought her the tea before she'd sent her back not only once but twice; first for milk and then for sugar. Although petty at best, perhaps even pathetic, this small act of revenge had made her feel a little better.

Her lips curved slightly at the thought of Dario's obvious amusement and of the woman's poorly hidden annoyance.

'Absolute power corrupts absolutely' she mused while stirring the cup, wondering what kind of person she was for letting even such a small amount get to her head.

When only the dregs remained in the bottom she started to grow restless. She'd tried to figure out what this place was to pass the time but had quickly given up as she kept hitting dead ends. Each theory was more ridiculous than the last, ranging from not-so-legal finincial consulting to Dario hiring hitmen.

That's why Amelia couldn't contain her curiosity when the sound of a door opening finally reached her ears. Since he had wanted her here Dario surely wouldn't mind if she was a bit nosy?

She stood up and carefully made her way towards the door, being mindful of her steps as to not overpower the sound of Darios' as well as another's subdued voices. When she drew closer she slowed her pace as to discern what they spoke of, but she could only make out snippets of their conversation.

"...come back in a month or so... hopefully more news then" a man said.

"...recieve the full payment until you do."

"... would expect nothing else... prefer you come alone the next time we meet. For both of our sakes."

When a floorboard creaked beneath her feet Amelia realised her cover was blown. She nonchalantly turned the corner into the room as if she hadn't just been trying to listen in on the two.

In front of a half opened door in the furthest back of the antechamber stood Dario along with a shorter and somewhat unkept man who appeared to be middle aged. He glared at her when their eyes met, making his feelings towards her presence perfectly clear.

Amelia put on a clueless, warm smile.

"My apologies. I was growing restless waiting but it seems I've interrupted you. Shall I go and wait?"

"That's not necessary, we were just finished" Dario said and slipped a note into his pocket. He then nodded towards the man.

"Until next time."

Peering over the man's shoulder Amelia spotted something interesting through the door that was left slightly ajar. A crudely drawn map on the wall in his office with several locations marken with pins, one of which she recognized.

The man must have notocied her wandering eyes because he gave her a deadly stare. She answered him with a jolly grin and greeted him goodbye.
