It felt like the ground collapsed on him, and his heart dropped into that pit.
Haxel blinked, tracing the shadowy woman's features with his eyes.
He tried remembering who she was, but his memory failed him.
For as long as he could remember, he had never made an enemy of her caliber. Never. This should be the first time the two of them met eye-to-eye, but the woman was staring at him with such intense hate that it made him second-guess himself.
"I don't understand…" He rasped. Beads of sweat were trickling down his face. "I don't know you."
The urge to flee was strong, but his back was against the well.
No way for him to escape.
"You don't know me, but I know what you did," the woman said slowly. Her voice was shaking—like she was holding back rage. The sight of Haxel filled her with rage—but he didn't know why. "Who do you think you are... Sir Haxel?"
