In the big V reviews and discussions on Sina Weibo, drama and film studies PhD and film critic @OneMyRoad2010 commented: "If the film is describing the continuous corruption and devouring of a person's life from the external to the spiritual realm, then the film merely sketches out the basic storyline of the original novel at a shallow level."
Compared to the complete restoration of the dialogue, the original work has a large amount of scene description which the film is difficult to convey to the audience intuitively, such as "the roof was changed to a layer of ancient-style green glazed tiles," "etched iron bars were installed on the windows," "jade snuff bottle and ivory Guanyin statue were displayed on the stove platform, with a striped bamboo screen surrounding the sofa."
