The question visibly caught Starla off guard. Her brows knit together.
"What are you talking about?"
Mervyn straightened slightly, sensing the shift.
"I know the Sovereign used to sneak you out of your family's mansion without informing your father so you could meet Mr. Vincent."
He folded his arms, sighing.
"And whenever your father found out, the Sovereign would tell him he had every right to take you wherever he pleased because you were his niece before you were your father's daughter."
Starla stared at him.
Then her lips parted in disbelief.
Both offended and baffled.
"So," Mervyn continued, a smug smile creeping onto his face, "I don't understand why you're looking at me as though I've committed such a terrible crime."
Starla was so baffled by what she had just heard that she actually froze.
For a moment, she simply stared at Mervyn, as though trying to determine whether he genuinely believed what he was saying or had completely lost his mind.
