Chapter 131 - Chapter 96: The Cost of Observation

Captain James Nolan's Log, Supplemental

Quarantine Observation Suite recording

30 days after Rothgard's Fall

Mirrors show more than faces.

Pride breaks in silence.

The future waits in white rooms.

Captain James Nolan stood in the dim observation suite, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the one-way glass that looked into the white interrogation room. Beside him, Commander Voss watched with professional detachment while Jasmine stood slightly behind them, hands clasped tightly in front of her as if the scene unfolding before her might slip away if she let go.

Inside the room, A.L.I. faced the Centurion with that same calm, measured presence. Darius Vaelor sat rigid in the white chair, orange overalls stark against the sterile surroundings, fists clenched on the table until his knuckles showed white. The last of his defiance was visibly cracking, shoulders trembling as A.L.I. delivered the final, unyielding facts in her clear, positive tone.

"I am sorry for the pain you feel," she said simply. "We protect our own and those who seek safety. That is all. We did not seek this fight. Your forces advanced on our position and opened fire on civilians under our protection. We responded to stop the threat." Darius's face twisted, the last fraying thread of his pride snapping visibly. His head dropped, breath coming in ragged gasps, the proud Centurion of the Draco Imperia reduced to a broken man staring at his own trembling hands.

Nolan let out a long, weary sigh and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I need to have another talk with Ali about not leaving character. She's getting a little too efficient at this." Voss gave a small nod, her expression unchanging. "She adapts quickly. The psychological profile is accurate, but the delivery can feel… clinical."

Nolan straightened, already turning toward the door. "Keep observing her progress, Voss. Note everything. I want a full debrief when she's done." He glanced once more at the glass, watching the Centurion's shoulders slump further, then looked at Jasmine. "Walk with me. I'm heading to the other holding areas to check on the rest of the prisoners. There are still quite a few who need to be questioned."

Jasmine nodded and fell into step beside him as they left the suite, the door hissing shut behind them. The corridors of the quarantine center were quiet, lit by the same soft, even light that filled every pre-fab on base. Their boots echoed softly on the composite floor while the distant hum of the facility's systems filled the silence between them.

After a few paces, Jasmine spoke, her voice low but steady. "Captain… I saw what happened in there. The way Ali broke that man without raising her voice. It was more terrifying than any dragon or spell I have ever witnessed. My people have already lost everything once. Will we lose ourselves here as well? Will we become nothing more than guests who are studied until we have nothing left to hide?"

Nolan slowed his stride slightly, giving her his full attention. "No. We study threats, not guests. Your people will have a true home at Shire Valley. We've already begun expanding the housing blocks and farms to accommodate everyone. But safety comes with rules. We cannot afford surprises, and we will not pretend the Draco Imperia is not still out there. That is why we are careful."

Jasmine's hands tightened at her sides. "Then what does that future look like for us? We are not soldiers like your Marines. We have farmers, artisans, and children. My uncle can offer land and protection, but it will take time. Months, perhaps years, before we can stand on our own again. Will your people grow tired of carrying us? Will we become a burden you regret?"

Nolan stopped at the next intersection, turning to face her fully. His expression was somber but honest. "We don't take on burdens we can't carry, Jasmine. We chose to help because it was the right thing to do. Your people will contribute. Some will work the farms; others will help build the permanent structures. A few may even choose to learn our technology. You will not be a burden. You will be neighbors. But it will take time, and it will take trust on both sides."

Jasmine searched his face for any trace of doubt and found none. She let out a slow breath, some of the tension easing from her shoulders. "Then I want to talk further about my people's future at Shire Valley. Not just shelter, but how we truly fit into this new world you are building. We have lost everything once. I will not let us lose ourselves as well."

Nolan gave a single, firm nod. "We'll talk about it. Right now, in fact. Walk with me to the next block. You can tell me exactly what your people need, and I'll tell you what we can provide." As they continued down the corridor together, the weight of command still pressed on Nolan's shoulders, but so did the knowledge that every decision here would shape the fragile alliance forming between two very different peoples.
