Ennis was no saint. He'd done so many bad things he could no longer keep count, but his memory of Vera Warner remained so vivid because of her beauty.
In the past, whenever Ennis set his sights on a woman, he would use any means necessary to get his hands on her. He had even brought men to try and abduct Vera, but someone else had taken her away before he could succeed.
'Could her showing up now be about what happened back then?'
"If you're going to make me think about it, are you talking about the time I tried to take you away? You know, if we had actually gotten together back then, our kid would probably be five or six years old by now!"
Ennis was only joking, but to Vera Warner, his words struck like a bolt from the blue. She was convinced he was the one who had violated her all those years ago.
Vera suddenly lunged at him, a flurry of kicks and punches. Her attacks were vicious, clearly intended to beat him to the ground.
