Vera Warner searched the surrounding area again, but there was still no sign of the nurse. A sense of panic washed over her.
'How could I not find her?'
'I was right behind her the whole time, and I didn't see anywhere to hide. Where on earth did she go?'
Vera had been excited at the prospect of finally learning about the past.
But now the woman was gone. How was she supposed to figure out what happened all those years ago?
Victor Morgan arrived shortly after. Seeing her dazed, he guessed she had lost the trail. "Vera," he said comfortingly, "I've had men posted at every exit from these alleys. She definitely didn't get out."
Vera sighed. "But there's nowhere to hide here. Where could she have gone? And then there's Luna Warner. We've deployed so many people and still haven't found her. Did they sprout wings and fly away?"
Victor pulled her into his arms. He rarely saw her spirits this low.
