Chapter 90 - Waiting

"Here," the girl handed me her phone, her hands still trembling. "You're really not going to call the state troopers?"

"No, not yet," I offer her a grateful smile, the wariness and exhaustion real. "I'll call them after I call my family. They're probably losing their minds."

"Yeah," she glances toward the door where Vishnu was waiting, toying with her lip. "It's a miracle you survived."

I kept my story simple.

After the girl got over the shock, she didn't hesitate to help. Letting us have as much water as we could drink, providing food for no charge, and offering to call the police.

"Can I sit with him while I call?" I point to the porch.

Vishnu was handling the situation better than expected. Hydrated and on his fifth helping of canned meat.

"Of course. Tell me if you need our address."

Nothing brings out the innocence in people like a mysterious woman covered in blood.

Not like I can run anywhere.
