Chapter 57 - C57: Constants and Variables

November 23, 2019. Anchor, Command Hub.

The air in the Command Hub felt heavy, thick with the static electricity of overworked displays and my own sheer exhaustion. I had been awake for thirty-six hours straight, surviving entirely on synthetic coffee and the cold, harsh light of the holographic interface.

Floating in front of me was the control wrapper for the FTL drive. It wasn't just code. It was a chaotic, three-dimensional tapestry of tensor calculus, quantum field equations, and energy flow metrics.

"Archi, run the simulation on subroutine epsilon-four again," I muttered, rubbing my eyes. "And this time, integrate the secondary fail-safes for the plasma injection regulators. Set the redundancy buffer to a hard one hundred percent."

"Running," Archi replied instantly.

A pulse of data flared through the hologram. A cascading string of numbers shifted, settling into a stable, but significantly slower rhythm.

"Simulation complete," Archi announced. "Surgrim, I must reiterate that this level of redundancy is unnecessary. The eight percent safety margin I calculated for the containment field is statistically absolute. We will survive the subspace displacement. By forcing a one hundred percent hard-limit buffer on the injection regulators, you are deliberately throttling the efficiency of the warp bubble."

"I am treating this like an enterprise server migration, Archi," I argued, swiping a hand through the hologram to highlight the specific tensor algorithms. "In infrastructure, if you don't have a backup for your backup, you have nothing. I don't care if your eight percent margin is mathematically flawless. Hardware degrades. Physical plasma conduits experience thermal expansion. If we hit a gravitational eddy in the Oort Cloud, I want a massive, brute-force safety net that instantly cuts the drive and drops us into normal space before the bubble can even think about collapsing."

"I do not want us to become a streak of gamma radiation any more than you do, Surgrim," Archi countered, his tone calm but carrying a distinct edge of logical persistence. "But you are applying terrestrial IT architecture to interstellar physics. A perfect Alcubierre metric isolates the vessel from normal space-time entirely. Within a flawless bubble, there is no time dilation. We could travel to Alpha Centauri and back in a matter of weeks, and the exact same amount of time would pass on Earth. But your massive safety buffers disrupt that perfection. You are creating friction against the universe."

"Reality has friction, Archi," I said, leaning forward. "We are building this in the physical world, and the physical world has variables. I want the safety."

Archi was silent for a brief moment, analyzing the exact topological changes my code would enforce on the universe.

"I have recalculated the temporal parameters based on your forced redundancies," Archi finally said. "Due to the friction introduced into the warp metric, the journey to Alpha Centauri will subject the Nomad to significant relativistic time dilation. For the crew aboard the ship, the round trip will feel like approximately two months. However, for observers outside the warp bubble - such as Earth, or this station - the elapsed time will be unpredictable. It could be three years. It could be five."

I stared at the glowing numbers. That was the price of a hundred percent redundancy. We wouldn't die, but we would be stepping out of sync with the rest of the universe.

"Lock the code, Archi," I ordered quietly. "I'd rather come home five years late than not come home at all."

"Code locked," Archi confirmed. "The Nomad is digitally prepped for interstellar transit."

I collapsed back into my chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The ship was ready. The spear was forged. Now, I just had to tell the people we were leaving behind.

Two Hours Later. Anchor, Atrium.

The Atrium was usually the loudest place on the station, filled with the chatter of forty-three scientists debating everything from botany to zero-g fluid dynamics. Today, it was dead silent.

I stood at the front of the room, facing the entire research staff. Rey and Sarah sat in the front row, looking incredibly nervous. Judy, Mereel, and Mabel stood leaning against the back wall. Mabel was wearing a tactical vest he had somehow convinced the 3D-printers to manufacture for him, looking entirely out of place among the lab coats.

"The Nomad is finished," I began, my voice carrying easily through the quiet room. "The secondary fusion core is online, the new hull is structurally sound, and the control wrapper is locked. We are ready to make the jump to Alpha Centauri."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Rey adjusted his glasses, raising a hand slightly.

"Surgrim," Rey asked, his voice hesitant. "How long will the evacuation take? We have sensitive hydroponic cultures that need to be stabilized for transit, and loading forty-three people into the cryo-bays will require at least - "

"We aren't evacuating, Rey," I interrupted gently.

The murmurs stopped instantly. The silence in the room became absolute.

"The Nomad is taking the jump," I clarified, looking around at the gathered scientists. "But the Anchor stays here. At L5."

Sarah stood up, her face pale. "You're leaving us? Here? Surgrim, you saw what General Vance did to the universities on Earth. If the military finds this station while you're gone..."

"They won't find you," I said firmly. "The Phase-Shift Lattice masking the station is fully operational. To Earth's radar, optical telescopes, and thermal sensors, this coordinate is just empty, freezing vacuum. You are invisible."

I brought up a holographic display of the station's inventory on the central Atrium projector.

"This is not an abandonment," I explained, pointing at the scrolling numbers. "This station was built to be autonomous, and it is. C.O.R.E. will remain active and handle all life support, power distribution, and gravity plating. Rey's hydroponics bay is currently producing a twelve percent surplus of our daily caloric needs. You have the raw materials from the comet to conduct zero-gravity research for the next twenty years."

"But why can't we come with you?" a younger physicist from MIT asked from the back.

"Because the Nomad is no longer a freighter. It's a testbed," I answered bluntly. "This is the very first time in human history that a warp bubble will be generated. The math is solid, but the reality is dangerous. If the subspace field collapses, the ship will be destroyed. I am not risking the lives of forty-three scientists on a maiden flight. You are safer here, hidden in the dark."

I looked directly at Rey and Sarah.

"There is something else," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "Archi and I built massive safety buffers into the engine's code to prevent a catastrophic failure. Because of that, the FTL jump will not be perfectly isolated from normal space. We will experience time dilation."

Rey's eyes widened in realization. "Relativistic drift. Oh my god."

"Exactly," I nodded. "For the crew on the Nomad, the trip to Alpha Centauri and back will take about two months of subjective time. But for you, sitting here in normal space... it won't be two months. It could be two years. It could be five. Maybe even more."

I let that sink in. I was asking them to wait years for a ship that might never come back.

"We are leaving the Taxi and two of the heavy Mules docked here at the station," I continued, my voice completely serious. "If anyone wants to go back to Earth, C.O.R.E. can fly you down in the Taxi and drop you off in a blind spot. The Mules can be used to gather more raw resources from the asteroid belt if you need them. You aren't prisoners here."

Nobody moved. Nobody spoke.

I looked at Rey. The botanist looked at his hands, then looked over his shoulder toward the massive, green glow of the hydroponics bay.

"My old life was begging for scraps of funding from bureaucrats who cared more about weapons than science," Rey said softly. "Down there, they lock the future in a vault. Up here... I'm growing alien plants in soil made from a comet. I have everything I need."

Sarah nodded in agreement, crossing her arms. "The Earth is toxic right now, Surgrim. General Vance proved that. We have the greatest laboratory in human history right here. We're not leaving."

A collective murmur of agreement swept through the scientists.

"Alright," I said, feeling a massive weight lift off my chest. "Judy has transferred all administrative command codes for the station to a rotating council headed by Rey and Sarah. You have full access to C.O.R.E. and the 3D printers."

I turned to my crew at the back of the room. Judy, Mereel, and Mabel.

"Pack your gear," I said. "We board the Nomad in one hour."

One Hour Later. The Nomad, Bridge.

The bridge of the redesigned Nomad felt completely different from the old freighter. The brutalist, open spaces were gone. Instead, the command center was located deep within the armored core of the ship, bathed in the dim, cool lighting of the new tactical systems.

I sat in the central command chair. It was wired directly into the Nomad's new neural-link network, giving me a seamless, real-time feel of the ship's massive energy grid.

Mereel was in the pilot's seat at the front, his hands flying across the haptic controls, running the final pre-flight checks on the anti-grav thrusters.

To my right, Judy was strapped into the logistics and engineering station, monitoring the power output of the secondary fusion reactor.

And to my left, sitting in a brand-new, heavily customized tactical chair, was Mabel. He was surrounded by four different holographic diagnostic screens, his eyes darting frantically between them.

"Point-defense grid registers green across the board," Mabel reported, rapidly tapping a sequence on his console. "Plasma Accelerators are in deep standby, but the magnetic containment fields are holding steady at one hundred percent. Targeting computer is active in simulation mode. Surgrim, this predictive software is insane. It's plotting micro-meteorite trajectories three hundred miles out just as a background diagnostic. The tracking fidelity is flawless."

"Keep the weapons safed for the transit, Mabel," I told him, though I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm.

"Safeties are on. We are strictly in observation mode," Mabel confirmed, leaning back in his chair.

"Surgrim," Judy called out, her screens flashing green. "The umbilical to the Anchor is detached. We are clear for launch."

I looked at the main viewscreen. The open, gaping maw of the station's massive hangar loomed ahead of us, the faint, shimmering blue haze of the energy shield separating the pressurized bay from the deadly void outside.

"Take us out, Mereel," I ordered. "Nice and slow."

"Copy that," Mereel said.

The Nomad shuddered slightly as the anti-grav drives engaged. With absolute, silent precision, the massive, nine-hundred-meter black spear drifted through the glowing blue containment field.

"We are clear of the station," Mereel reported.

"Archi," I said, gripping the armrests of my chair. "Spin up the secondary fusion core. Route all power to the Phase-Shift Lattice. Give me the warp parameters."

"Reactor online," Archi's voice echoed through the bridge. "Tachyon sensors are mapping the immediate gravitational topography. Calculating Alcubierre metric trajectory for Alpha Centauri. Massive redundancy buffers are engaged. Expect severe temporal displacement upon arrival."

I looked at the stars on the main screen. They looked cold. Unforgiving.

"Execute the jump."
