Chapter 64 - C64: Next Steps

The next morning, or at least what passed for morning on the station's chronometers, the atmosphere on Anchor was entirely different. 

The frantic, desperate energy of the previous day had dissolved, replaced by a steady, productive hum. The Nomad's fusion reactor was purring perfectly, feeding massive amounts of stable power through the heavy umbilicals. The ambient temperature in the residential ring had finally stabilized at a comfortable twenty one degrees Celsius, and for the first time in six months, the crew hadn't gone to sleep wearing three layers of winter clothing. 

In the background, invisible to the naked eye but constantly monitored by Archi, a swarm of several billion repair nanites was quietly undoing the damage caused by the blown superconducting coils, systematically fusing the micro-fractures in the station's grid. Anchor was healing. 

I was sitting in the Command Center, nursing a cup of coffee, watching the tactical holotable. Judy was standing across from me, her fingers dancing over the holographic interface as she sifted through the massive backlog of intercepted terrestrial data. 

"So, what is the actual state of the world down there?" I asked, gesturing to the blue marble projection of Earth. "When we first arrived, Archi mentioned an increase in orbital traffic, but nothing apocalyptic."

Judy nodded, pulling up a series of orbital trajectories. "It is exactly as we saw on the initial scan. They have not magically ascended to a new technological age. They are still relying on chemical rockets to get mass into orbit. Their infrastructure is powered by fragile solar arrays and basic fission reactors. The international community is throwing money at expanding the ISS, and the Chinese are pushing more rockets with low payloads toward the Moon. They are busy, but technologically, they are exactly where we left them."

"No secret space fleet, then," Mereel said, walking into the room and leaning against the bulkhead. 

"No," Judy replied. "They are nervous, but they are stuck in the mud of their own physics."

I tapped my console, pulling up the encrypted routing network that connected to our public Ledger on Earth. "They might be stuck, but they haven't forgotten. Look at this."

I opened the analytics for the Nomad Project's Ledger. The graph of active users and comments painted a depressing picture. 

"During the first four weeks after we vanished, the activity was massive," I explained, tracing the timeline. "People were constantly asking when the Nomad group would post the next update. But as the months dragged on... it shifted. By month six, the conspiracy theories started. Did the government shoot us down? Did a reactor test fail? By year one, the consensus was that we were dead."

"And after two years?" Sarah asked softly as she entered the room, followed by Rey and a few senior researchers. 

"Total flatline," I said. "Only a few hardcore followers holding out hope. To the rest of the world, the Nomad Project is a tragedy. A failed experiment."

I placed my hands on the console, my fingers hovering over the holographic keyboard. 

"Time to wake them up," I said. 

I didn't write a manifesto. I didn't explain time dilation or Alpha Centauri. I just typed a single, simple line onto the Ledger and hit publish. 

We are not dead. The dream continues. We are back.

"Archi signed it with the original Ledger keys," Judy said. "Every newsroom, university, and intelligence agency will know it is real within minutes."

"That," Rey chuckled nervously, "is going to cause an absolute meltdown in every intelligence agency on the planet."

"Let them panic," I said, waving the ledger screen away. "We have bigger mysteries to solve. Archi, bring up the Alpha Centauri file. The artifact."

The holographic projection of Earth vanished. In its place, a perfectly smooth object forty meters across materialized in the center of the table. The wireframe projection rotated slowly, glowing with a faint blue light.

The scientists leaned in instantly, their eyes wide. 

"What is that?" Sarah breathed, her eyes reflecting the blue light. "The geometry is perfect. There is no variance. Not even on a microscopic level."

"We found it on the toxic, high pressure planet in the Alpha Centauri system," I explained, pointing to the dense atmospheric readings attached to the file. "It was buried deep in a trench. It is not a natural formation. The isotopic signature of the surface material does not match anything in the local star system, or ours. It gave no readable power signature, but when our nanites tried to deconstruct it, the object projected an active integrity field and locked its molecular structure in place. Whatever is inside is shielded by a material we do not understand."

"An alien artifact," Rey whispered, adjusting his glasses. "A genuine, non-human construct. Surgrim, this is proof of intelligent, interstellar engineering."

"I know," I said quietly. "We didn't have the time, the equipment, or the sheer brainpower to safely analyze it out there. That's why I brought the data back to you. I want a dedicated team on this."

I looked at the group of researchers. "Dr. Matteo Reig."

A tall, sharp-featured man with greying hair stepped forward. He was one of the materials physicists C.O.R.E. had extracted during the last stealth run, and his eyes never left the projection of the object. "Yes, Surgrim?"

"You're the project lead," I said. "Take all the resources you need. I want to know what it is, what it's made of, and most importantly, if it's safe for us to eventually retrieve it."

"Understood," Dr. Reig said, already pulling out his datapad to sync with Archi's raw sensor logs. "We'll begin structural analysis immediately. If the outer shell is that dense, we might need to design entirely new spectrographic resonance scanners just to see past the first inch."

"Take your time," I assured him. "Because right now, we need to talk about our primary operational bottleneck. Time dilation."

Mereel groaned, crossing his arms. "Don't remind me. Missing two years of our lives every time we jump to the nearest star is a massive strategic liability."

"Exactly," I said. "Before we installed the Integrity Field, the dilation factor was horrific. The Integrity Field brought it down to a 2.47 ratio. It's manageable, but it's still unacceptable for long-term operations."

"The core issue," Archi began, his voice projecting through the room's speakers, "is subspace drag. When the Nomad initiates a warp jump, the Phase Shift Lattice generates an aggressive energy bubble to protect the ship from the crushing physics of the subspace tunnel. This bubble is incredibly powerful, but it is highly disruptive to the surrounding space time continuum."

"Like driving a blunt, square truck through a wind tunnel," Mereel offered. "You need a massive engine to push through the resistance, but you create a huge wake. Can we just pump more power into the Phase Shift Lattice? Brute force our way through faster?"

"No," Archi countered immediately. "More power equates to a larger, more aggressive warp bubble. That increases subspace friction. In the realm of subspace physics, brute force punishes you with exponential time dilation."

Judy stepped up to the table, her eyes tracking the mathematical models Archi was projecting. "What if we don't use brute force? What if we make the ship... slicker?"

"Define 'slicker'," I said, leaning in. 

"The Integrity Field we installed made the titanium hull physically stronger," Judy explained, bringing up the schematic of the Nomad's YBCO superconducting cables. "But the warp bubble is still acting like a blunt shield. If we alter the harmonic frequency of the Integrity Field, we might be able to tune the physical hull to harmonize with the subspace frequencies. Instead of fighting the tunnel, the ship would slip through it with minimal drag."

"Less drag means less interference with the space time continuum," Sarah realized, catching on. "Less interference means a drastically lower time dilation factor."

I stared at the holographic projection of the Nomad, listening to Judy and Sarah discuss the harmonic tuning. It was a brilliant idea. Refining the ship's internal systems to make it more aerodynamic in subspace. 

But as I looked at the ship, a completely different, wilder thought struck me. 

Why are we trying to fix the ship?

"Wait," I said, my voice cutting through the chatter. The room fell silent. "We're looking at this the wrong way."

I walked around the holotable, my mind suddenly racing, connecting pieces of technology we had developed over the last year. 

"The Nomad is incredible," I started, gesturing to the ship. "But it has limits. We are trying to cram a fusion reactor, a Phase Shift Lattice, a nanite forge, and an Integrity Field into a mobile hull. We are severely limited by mass, cooling, and internal volume."

"That's the reality of space travel, Surgrim," Rey pointed out. 

"But what if it doesn't have to be?" I countered, my eyes wide. I looked at Archi. "Archi, what happens if we take the Phase Shift Lattice and the Integrity Field generators off the ship?"

"I am not sure I understand the query," Archi replied. "Without those systems, the Nomad cannot enter subspace."

"Not on its own," I said, a massive grin spreading across my face. I swiped my hand across the console, clearing the Nomad schematic and bringing up a blank grid. "What if we build the warp drive in open space? What if we build a Gate?"

The room went dead silent. 

"A Gate," Mereel repeated, slowly pushing himself off the wall. 

"Think about it," I said, my hands flying over the interface as I began to hastily sketch a massive, ring-shaped megastructure. "A stationary installation. It doesn't need to move, so it doesn't have mass restrictions. We can power it with an array of massive fusion reactors that would never fit inside a ship. We line the ring with a hyper scaled Phase Shift Lattice and a stationary Integrity Field."

"The Gate generates the subspace tunnel," Judy whispered, staring at my crude drawing. 

"Exactly!" I said, my excitement bleeding into my voice. "The Gate does all the heavy lifting. It uses its massive, stationary power grid to tear open a perfectly stable, harmonized subspace tunnel. The Nomad doesn't have to fight the physics of the jump. The Gate acts as a slingshot. It accelerates the ship into the tunnel. The ship just coasts through, perfectly protected by the Gate's localized Integrity Field projection."

"The mathematics are sound," Archi announced. "A stationary megastructure, freed from the mass and thermal constraints of a mobile vessel, could generate a stable subspace corridor with minimal drag. If the vessel is propelled through the corridor by a controlled gravitational slingshot, the relativistic drift would be reduced to a factor of approximately 1.07. For practical purposes, the transit time experienced by the crew would match external elapsed time within a small margin."

"A few weeks," Mereel breathed, staring at the math. "And it would actually be a few weeks."

"There is a caveat," Archi added. "A 'slingshot' maneuver creates a unilateral tunnel. The subspace corridor will naturally decay at the target destination. The ship will drop out of warp safely, but the unilateral projection puts significant shearing stress on the vessel's hull upon exit, as the tunnel collapses around it."

"So it's a rough landing," Mabel grunted. "We can handle a rough landing."

"But we wouldn't have to handle it forever," I countered. "That's the beauty of it. We build Gate One right here at Anchor. We use it to slingshot the Nomad to Alpha Centauri. Because the Gate's stationary reactors handle the massive energy requirement of tearing space, the Nomad doesn't have to do the heavy lifting."

"And you build Gate Two at Alpha Centauri," Rey finished, realizing the scope of what I was proposing.

"Yes," I nodded. "A receiver. Once Gate Two is online and synced with Gate One, the tunnel isn't unilateral anymore. It is an anchored bridge. A permanent, perfectly stable highway between two star systems. Minimal stress on the ship. We just fly through."

"If we rely on Gates, we lose flexibility," Judy noted, her brow furrowed. "If one side goes dark, the ship could be stranded."

"That is why we do not remove the Nomad's Warp drives," I replied. "The Gate is the highway, not the only way home."

"But how fast is the highway?" Sarah asked, pulling up Archi's preliminary calculations. "The slingshot method has a dilation factor of 1.07. But what happens when both Gates are active?"

"Archi?" I asked, looking at the ceiling.

"When two stationary megastructures synchronize their Phase Shift Lattices, they create a perfectly isolated subspace corridor," Archi explained smoothly. "Within this paired Gate corridor, spatial drag is reduced to near zero. The time dilation factor stabilizes at 1.00 within operational tolerance."

"No time drift at all," Mereel said, a grin spreading across his face. "But what about the speed? If there's zero drag..."

"Think of it like a fiber-optic cable, Mereel," I said, tapping the holotable. "With our own drive, we were swimming through mud. With two Gates maintaining the tunnel, there is nothing pushing back against the ship. The Gates can accelerate the Nomad to speeds its own internal reactor could never achieve."

"Estimated transit time between Sol and Alpha Centauri within a dual-Gate corridor," Archi stated, "is approximately fourteen hours."

The room went completely silent.

"Fourteen hours," Rey whispered, taking off his glasses. "Two years passed for us while you made that trip. Now you're turning an interstellar voyage into a day trip."

The magnitude of the idea settled over the room. We were not just talking about upgrading a ship anymore. We were talking about laying the infrastructure for an interstellar transport network.

"It is a beautiful theory," Rey said quietly, breaking the silence. "But Surgrim, look at the scale of what you just drew."

He pointed at the holotable. My rough sketch of the Gate dwarfed Anchor station. 

"To generate a field that stable, the ring has to be at least two kilometers in diameter," Rey noted. "Maybe three. If we build that... we can't hide it."

"The cloaking field won't stretch that far," Judy agreed, her analytical mind immediately seeing the tactical flaw. "And the energy spike of a stationary Phase Shift Lattice powering up will be visible to every deep space telescope on Earth."

"They will see us," Rey said, looking at me. "The moment we start construction, the entire world will know exactly where we are, and exactly what we are doing."

I looked at the blue projection of Earth hovering in the corner of the map. We had spent two years hiding in the dark, building our miracles in secret because we were afraid of what humanity would do if they found us. But the Gate would be impossible to hide, and hiding was no longer the same thing as safety.

"Let them see us," I said. "We control the message through the Ledger, and we make sure the construction site can defend itself. If Vance wants to test us, he can waste his rockets against point defense grids and phase shields."

Mereel grinned, clapping his hands together. "Well, if we're going to build a three-kilometer space door in broad daylight, we're going to need some serious construction equipment."

"Which is exactly why we built the Class 3 drydock," Mabel laughed, pointing out the window toward the massive new secondary ring of the station. "Those heavy manufacturing arms you installed, Rey? They are perfect for this."

"He's right," Sarah realized, looking out the window. "We don't have to build the Gate in one piece. We can use the Nomad's nanite forges to print massive modular segments. The heavy manufacturing arms can position the segments perfectly in the vacuum, and we use a swarm of nanites to seamlessly weld them together in place. We can build the ring out in all directions simultaneously."

"It will be the largest engineering project in human history," Dr. Reig noted, looking up from his datapad. 

"Then we better get started," I smiled, looking around the room at my crew. "Dr. Reig, you and your team crack that artifact. Judy, keep an eye on Earth's reaction to the Ledger post. Mereel, Mabel, go fire up the shipyard. I want to see how fast we can start printing Gate segments."

The quiet, desperate survival of the last two years was over. The Nomad project was entering a new era, and this time, the whole world was going to watch.
