The attacker didn't use a botnet, but instead exploited the amplification effect of a popular database caching system called memcached.
By flooding memcached servers with deceptive requests, the attack ended up being amplified thousands, even tens of thousands of times.
This is a relatively avant-garde attack technique—highly technical, and right now only a handful of people can pull it off.
