Chapter 495 - Call It Character Building

Seven Sins System Chapter 495. Call It Character Building

I leaned back, crossing my arms and raising an eyebrow at her. "Because to me, there isn't," I said plainly. "It's what I do. I'm a punisher. Sinners get what they deserve, and I don't lose sleep over it."

Puriel's frown deepened, but there was no real argument in her eyes. "You're not wrong," she said softly, almost as if she didn't want to admit it. "But that's the part of you I'll never understand. You can detach yourself so easily from the guilt."

I shrugged. "That's the difference between devils and angels, isn't it? You feel every little thing. We don't. We just act."

There was a moment of silence before she spoke again. "So, your task is done?" she asked, her eyes briefly flicking toward the cabinet where my tentacles had been working. She watched as the last of them retracted back into my body, disappearing from sight.

"Yeah, that's about it," I replied, standing up and stretching my arms above my head. "The supply check is done. Everything's in order."

She seemed to relax slightly but stayed where she was. "So… what do you usually do when you're alone? In these hours?" she asked, her voice curious but cautious.

I placed the list on my desk, leaning against it casually. "Not much," I admitted with a slight shrug. "Just wait. Sometimes students come in, get hurt, and I treat them, but honestly, most of the time it's just like this—quiet. I usually spend my time reading mortal books."

"Books?" she raised an eyebrow.

I let out a small chuckle. "Yeah, boring, I know. But it's better than dealing with the endless piles of work and documents back in the Shadow Realm. You wouldn't believe how much paperwork comes with ruling that place. Sometimes it could take up my sleeping hours."

Puriel blinked in surprise and frowned, clearly not expecting that. "You don't sleep?"

I glanced at her, seeing the genuine curiosity in her eyes. "Sometimes not for a week. Depends on how much I'm juggling at once."

Her frown deepened as she blinked, clearly not used to the idea. "Why do you have so much work?"

I gave her a dry smile. "You know how my father is. You can't mess around with him. He's strict, but he also loves to shove his duties onto me. He calls it 'training,' but really, it's just his excuse to take time off and indulge himself."

She tilted her head, her lips pursing as she listened. "I can't imagine your father being so… careless with responsibilities."

I scoffed, crossing my arms. "Oh, he's not careless. He just knows he can dump things on me and call it character building. I handle it because, well, what choice do I have? But it's exhausting. Sometimes I'm up for days, trying to get everything in order."

Puriel's brow furrowed, and for a moment, her typical sharpness faded. Instead of her usual stern expression, there was something softer, almost contemplative. "I didn't expect this side of you," she admitted, her voice quiet. "You're… a hard worker."

I chuckled, a bit surprised by the compliment. "Thanks," I said, leaning back against the desk. "I'm not just a pretty face with tentacles, you know."

She rolled her eyes, but there was a small smile tugging at her lips. "It's strange to think of you dealing with paperwork, running things behind the scenes. I always thought devils spent their time plotting, tormenting, or… indulging."

I shrugged. "We do all that too, but someone has to keep the place running. And like I said, my father loves to push the responsibility onto me. So yeah, I work a lot."

Puriel's gaze remained on me, and there was a flicker of something in her eyes—maybe admiration, or perhaps just understanding. It was a rare moment where she wasn't looking at me like I was some kind of villain.

"Anything else?" I asked, shifting the focus away from myself. "Or is that enough new information about me for one day?"

She hesitated for a moment before answering, her voice thoughtful. "I just found out about this side of you, that's all. I didn't realize you were so… dedicated to your work. It's not what I expected from the Lord of Wrath."

I smirked, leaning toward her slightly. "What did you expect? That I'd spend all day sitting on a throne, summoning inferno, and yelling at sinners?"

"Something like that," she admitted with a slight smile. "The way you talk about punishment, it's easy to forget that there's more to it than just inflicting pain."

"Well, now you know," I said, standing up and walking over to the window, gazing out at the academy grounds below. "But what about you? What do you do up there in the Light Realm? I've always wondered since… Well, you guys literally don't have any jobs."

She gave me a puzzled look. "What do you mean we don't have jobs?"

I turned back to her, raising an eyebrow. "Come on. You don't punish anyone, you don't deal with the chaos of the lower realms, and I bet only a few people actually make it up there. So, what do you do all day?"

Her face softened again, but this time there was a faint smile playing on her lips. "It's not as easy as you think, Azrael. We do more than just sit around on clouds, watching over mortals."

I folded my arms, leaning against the wall. "Then enlighten me. What's a typical day like for a goddess in the Light Realm? Because from where I'm standing, it sounds pretty boring."

She sighed, almost as if she expected this line of questioning. "It's not just about waiting for souls to arrive," she began, her voice steady. "Our role is more about maintaining balance. We guide, we intervene when necessary, but most of what we do is… quiet. Subtle. We're not like you, constantly in the middle of conflict. Our influence is felt in the small things—helping mortals find their path, offering guidance they don't even realize they're receiving."
