After the destruction of the Timeless City, Nelson began to experience a macabre sense of déjà vu, as if he had returned to the time of the Epic Plains when their group targeted Faceless Ancient and everything started to go wrong.
That's why Nelson became extremely cautious and went underground while also working to stabilize the tumbling ATLAS, but without the Timeless City or its Machina Unit, it was impossible.
However, the ATLAS wasn't just an ordinary organization, and with God's backing, Nelson made some progress, but then he received another mission from his Patron God.
The mission to drop everything and find someone called the Cursed One. Moreover, Nelson sensed God's mirth and agitation when he received this mission, something he had never seen, as God never let his emotions show.
But maybe after turning Nelson into an acolyte, he was able to connect more deeply with that God and sense its strange state.
