Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

-Quiet After the Storm -

The silence felt strange.

For the first time since entering Walmart...

No zombies chased them.

No gunshots echoed.

Only the sound of footsteps as the survivors made their way through the woods.

Breddy carried the claymore over his shoulder.

Every step became heavier.

His breathing grew slower.

His vision blurred.

Raven looked over.

"Breddy...?"

He smiled weakly.

"I'm fi—"

Before he could finish...

His knees buckled.

The claymore slipped from his hand.

"Breddy!"

Raven lunged forward and caught him before he hit the ground.

His head rested against her shoulder.

The others rushed over.

Tyler looked panicked.

"Is he bitten?!"

Raven quickly checked his arms and neck.

"No."

She let out a relieved sigh.

"He's exhausted."

Mason picked up the claymore.

"This thing weighs a ton..."

"No wonder he's worn out."

Raven gently brushed Breddy's messy brown ponytail away from his face.

"He pushed himself too hard."

The manager nodded.

"We're carrying him."

Without another word, Mason lifted Breddy onto his shoulders while the rest of the group continued toward an old hunting cabin hidden deep in the forest.

Hours Later...

Warm sunlight filtered through the cabin windows.

A fire crackled in the stone fireplace.

Breddy slowly opened his eyes.

"...Where..."

His vision cleared.

Raven was sitting beside the bed, quietly cleaning her pistol.

The moment she noticed he was awake...

She smiled.

"You finally decided to wake up."

Breddy rubbed his forehead.

"How long was I out?"

"Almost six hours."

He tried sitting up.

Raven immediately placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Easy."

"You nearly collapsed."

Breddy chuckled softly.

"Guess I overdid it."

"A little?" she teased.

"You fought a Juggernaut with a claymore."

"I'd say that's overdoing it."

The two laughed.

For the first time...

There were no zombies.

No screaming.

Just peace.

Raven looked at him.

"...Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"You fight like you've been doing it your whole life."

Breddy leaned back against the wall.

"In a way..."

"I have."

"My family's been in the military for generations."

"My grandfather taught me discipline."

"My father taught me never to panic."

"When I was growing up..."

"They showed me boxing, wrestling, basic swordsmanship, and how to survive with whatever you have."

Raven listened carefully.

"So why Walmart?"

Breddy smiled.

"I wanted a normal life."

"I wasn't looking for war."

"I figured stocking shelves and helping customers would be enough."

He laughed.

"Funny how life works."

Raven smiled.

"You never really escaped your training."

"No."

"I just ended up fighting in blue instead of camouflage."

They both laughed again.

After a long silence...

Breddy looked at her.

"My turn."

"You always know military radio codes."

"You clear rooms perfectly."

"You never miss with that pistol."

He met her eyes.

"Who are you, really?"

Raven looked into the fireplace.

For a moment...

She didn't answer.

Then she quietly spoke.

"I was in the Army."

"I served for twelve years."

"Special operations."

"I spent most of my life on missions no one was supposed to know about."

She stared into the flames.

"I lost people."

"Good people."

"And when this outbreak started..."

"I couldn't save them."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"I still see their faces."

Breddy didn't interrupt.

He simply listened.

Raven wiped away a tear before it could fall.

"I've been running ever since."

Breddy reached over and gently rested a hand on hers.

"You don't have to run anymore."

She looked at him.

For the first time...

The fearless woman who fought through hordes of zombies looked vulnerable.

She smiled.

"...Thank you."

Outside...

The wind rustled the trees.

Inside the cabin...

The two survivors sat quietly together, no longer just teammates...

...but friends beginning to trust one another.

- One Quiet Night -

Rain tapped softly against the cabin windows.

For once...

No gunfire.

No screams.

No zombies pounding on the doors.

Only the sound of the fireplace.

Breddy stood on the front porch, leaning against the railing with a mug of coffee in his hands.

The cold air felt... normal.

Almost peaceful.

The cabin door creaked open behind him.

Raven stepped outside, wearing her tactical vest over her torn black dress.

"You couldn't sleep either?"

Breddy smiled.

"Too much on my mind."

She leaned against the railing beside him.

For a while...

Neither of them spoke.

They simply listened to the rain.

Inside the cabin...

Tyler peeked through the curtains.

He looked over at Mason.

"I think they're having a moment."

Mason chuckled quietly.

"Good."

"They deserve one."

The manager smiled as he tossed another log onto the fire.

"We'll take first watch."

"And second watch."

"Let them have tonight."

No one argued.

The group quietly kept their distance.

Outside...

Raven looked at Breddy's custom Walmart tactical vest.

"You know..."

"I've been meaning to tell you something."

Breddy looked over.

"What is it?"

She reached over and brushed a little dirt from the Walmart logo.

"I've seen soldiers wearing expensive gear..."

"...but somehow..."

"...that beat-up Walmart vest is the one I remember."

Breddy laughed.

"I never thought this old thing would become my lucky vest."

"It suits you."

"So do you."

The words slipped out before Raven realized she'd said them.

She looked away, suddenly embarrassed.

Breddy rubbed the back of his neck.

"I don't usually know what to say to compliments."

She smiled.

"I noticed."

The rain grew heavier.

A cool breeze swept across the porch.

Without thinking...

Raven moved a little closer.

"I spent years believing I'd always fight alone."

She looked out into the darkness.

"Then I met you."

Breddy was quiet for a moment.

"I spent years trying to live an ordinary life."

"Walmart..."

"My house..."

"My friends..."

"I thought that was enough."

He looked at her.

"Now I'm just trying to make sure everyone gets another chance."

Raven nodded.

"That's why people follow you."

"Not because you're the strongest."

"Because you never stop protecting everyone."

Breddy smiled.

"My grandfather used to say..."

"'A real leader eats last.'"

"I didn't understand it back then."

"I do now."

The silence returned.

It wasn't awkward.

It was comforting.

Raven looked at Breddy.

"You know..."

"When this is over..."

"What do you want?"

He thought for a long time.

"A little house."

"A quiet life."

"No zombies."

She laughed.

"That's it?"

"And maybe..."

He looked at her with a grin.

"...someone to drink coffee with."

Raven's cheeks turned slightly pink.

"I think..."

"I'd like that."

She gently rested her head against his shoulder.

Neither of them moved away.

Inside the cabin, Tyler smiled.

"Told you."

Mason quietly pulled the curtain closed.

"Give them some privacy."

The manager grinned.

"They've earned it."

Outside...

The rain continued to fall.

For one peaceful night...

The apocalypse didn't matter.

They were just two people finding hope in each other.

Then...

Far off in the distance...

A single, chilling roar echoed through the forest.

The peaceful moment ended.

Breddy and Raven slowly looked toward the dark tree line.

Tomorrow...

The fight would begin again.
