Martin Fernandez listened to her indignant grumbling, thought for a moment, and said, "Miss Joseph, could I trouble you to lend me your phone so I can contact my family?"
"Also, it really hurts."
Sarah Joseph had a "what kind of person is this, only now remembers to call family, only now knows it hurts" expression on her face, but she still took the phone out of her coat pocket and handed it to him.
Martin dialed a number and said, in a flat tone, "It's me."
Then he reported the hospital address and hung up, handing the phone back to her.
"Thank you, Miss Joseph," he said.
Sarah replied with a casual "you're welcome," then asked, "When can your family get here?"
She instinctively assumed he had called his family.
"They should be here in about an hour." Martin checked the time—12:40 a.m. It was very late, but she still showed no intention of leaving, apparently planning to stay until his "family" arrived.
