Dory had known Jenna since they were eight.
Their friendship had started after Dory accidentally broke a classroom window with a ball and blamed the wind.
Jenna had known immediately that she was lying.
They had been friends ever since.
So when Dory came to visit and saw Jenna's exhausted face, she knew something was wrong.
"You look terrible."
Jenna smiled.
"Nice to see you too."
"I mean it in a caring way."
Dory placed a bag of snacks on the bed.
Jenna barely touched them.
Dory watched her for a moment.
"You're not okay."
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not."
Jenna looked away.
Dory didn't push her.
At least, not at first.
She noticed Jenna kept checking the clock.
"Why do you keep looking at the time?"
"Nothing."
"What time are you waiting for?"
Jenna didn't answer.
Later, while Jenna was in the bathroom, Dory noticed the notebook on the bed.
She read the first page.
WHAT I KNOW.
WHAT I THINK.
Then:
ELIAS EXISTED.
THE HOUSE WAS A RESEARCH FACILITY.
03:17.
Jenna came back.
She immediately took the notebook.
"You shouldn't read that."
"Then tell me what's happening."
"I don't know."
"Jenna."
"I said I don't know."
Dory stopped.
She could tell Jenna was genuinely scared.
Then—
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
They both looked toward the ceiling.
A voice came from upstairs.
"Dory?"
Dory slowly turned toward Jenna.
"You called me?"
"No."
The voice came again.
"Dory."
Jenna grabbed her hand.
"Don't go."
Dory looked at her.
"Whatever this is, we'll figure it out."
The voice changed.
Now it sounded like Dory.
"Jenna?"
Dory's face went pale.
"That wasn't me."
