"Miss Wells, you worry too much. Whether Old Master Smith likes me or not, I don't care at all."
Bertha Haines didn't want to be at a disadvantage, even if it was just a verbal spar. Amos Smith had told her that no matter what happened, she could act as she pleased.
"Of course, I am self-aware and also content. Maybe I can't become Mrs. Smith, but I can certainly prevent you from becoming Mrs. Smith. Believe it or not?"
Blanche Wells was momentarily stunned, then her lips curled into a mocking smile.
"I didn't expect Miss Norris to be so cunning at such a young age. I wonder if Amos knows."
Bertha replied with a facade of a smile, "In terms of cunning, Miss Wells probably isn't lacking either."
Seeing the assistant bring over two cups of tea, Bertha deliberately said.
"I know you want to marry my uncle, but if my uncle indeed liked you, you would probably already be Mrs. Smith by now. So, I suggest Miss Wells not to waste time on my uncle."
