"Mom, I want to ask you something."
Bertha Haines had kept wondering in her heart about whether she had cheated. If she couldn't clear her name, she felt she might just die from frustration.
Jerry Moore looked at his daughter as though she were a precious treasure found again: "Ask away."
Bertha directly asked, "Back then, why did I break up with Amos Smith?"
The smile in Jerry Moore's eyes slowly faded: "Why suddenly think of asking that? If you've forgotten the past, then don't think about it anymore."
From her biological mother's evasive eyes, Bertha discovered a clue, and an uneasy premonition grew in her heart.
"Mom, this is very important to me."
Jerry Moore didn't want to tell her daughter the truth, fearing she might overthink it: "What else could it be—naturally, it's because you felt you didn't love him anymore."
Bertha tested, "So, after The Norris Clan went bankrupt, I broke up with him and then got back together? When I decided to be with Clare Lewis..."
