Upon hearing the term, Duanmu Huai raised an eyebrow. He knew what it meant. The origins of courtesans are mostly transactional. Some are sold by their parents, while others do it to pay off debts. However, even within these circumstances, there are different relationships.
One of them is the borrowing relationship. A courtesan sells herself to the brothel, forming a "borrowing relationship." As long as the courtesan works hard and repays the brothel's money, she will be free.
The other is buying relationships, but the latter is chosen by those with absolutely no way out; after all, the former still retains some personal freedom, while the latter is basically no different from slavery.
