The line collapsed completely. The spawns poured through the gaps like floodwater through broken stone. There were too many of them and they were far stronger than what they had faced before. Far more than Clyde had calculated.
They came from the crater, from the alleys, and from the ruined buildings behind them, drawn by blood and fear.
Clyde turned around, his spear became a silver blur as he tried to push back toward the others.
He impaled one spawn, ripped the spear free, then swept another off its feet.
Mina followed close, her daggers flashing, carving a narrow path through the white bodies.
But the path was too narrow. They were too late.
"AAARR-"
A scream cut through the chaos. It was short and abrupt, as if it were cut off in the middle of breath.
James went down under a mass of white fur and claws. The spawns swarmed, piling on top of his body. Flesh tore, bones cracked, blood sprayed across the asphalt.
Whatever voice had screamed did not scream again.
