Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
Another moon passed as the ships had finally arrived in the North, and the free folk docked within Karstark territory to continue toward the great city where their families and acquaintances were, in the Gift. The city had become enormous, and they began working to expand it further with the addition of the warriors who had fought in the southern war. At the same time, Mance would organize a few things with them and, afterward, head to Winterfell, where his wife was.
The Northern lords who were already in the North were also preparing, mobilizing resources and men throughout the region for the Wall, while at the same time preparing food for the people now that winter had arrived. The men of Skagos were also part of this. After all, they had fought alongside the Northerners, and now they would no longer remain isolated, joining once again with the North, the free folk, and the rest of Westeros against the army of the dead.
The Iron Bank had provided not only food but also ships to gather more resources and people from the south, collecting whatever they could throughout Essos. They had also brought a great quantity of timber. At the same time, the ships captured in the Iron Islands were also loaded with every kind of resource from the Reach and quickly began transporting them to the North, arriving on the western side of the continent.
Daemon also issued a decree ordering all the naval shipyards of the Seven Kingdoms to begin constructing ships two moons ago. Every kingdom took part, but most of the construction was carried out in the Westerlands, the Stormlands, Dorne, and the Reach. They had managed to produce at least another hundred ships to transport resources to the North during those moons, and they were already being sent north.
While everyone was focused on the North, all the kingdoms were still governed from the capital. Daemon as well was able to travel anywhere from King's Landing quickly, being absent for days to resolve problems that had arisen in each of them during that time. It couldn't be said that it was easy, especially when all the lords were either in the capital or on their way to the North.
Daemon also managed to find some time to go to Winterfell, which was the only place where, for the time being, he didn't have to get involved with politics as he did in King's Landing, although he was fortunate to have Val as a pleasant distraction in the capital.
In any case, with the massive supply of timber, they quickly began expanding Mole's Town. And not only that. Soldiers had been sent there, but also many prostitutes from the capital and various parts of the realm began boarding ships to earn some coins by servicing the soldiers in the North.
Daemon turned a blind eye to it. After all, he knew just how desperate those men could become after months without the touch of a woman, especially when they had no idea when they would truly face the dead—it could still take moons.
In any case, while the free folk who had settled in the cities of the Gift were one matter, the southern soldiers needed somewhere to stay. Thus, they ended up choosing Mole's Town, where they quickly began expanding it, just as the men began occupying every castle and checkpoint along all three hundred miles of the Wall.
Daemon also made sure to visit the Wall a few times during that period, at least twice, taking advantage of the times he was in Winterfell. He would stop by to see how things were progressing and speak with the Lord Commander.
As for the resources he had demanded from the kingdoms, in the end, the king did not obtain everything he wanted. Naturally, whether out of resentment or greed, some nobles did not hand over everything that had been requested.
Daemon already possessed all the record books, as he had ordered, containing all the information regarding the taxes and resources each fief had produced over the past five years. Some of the figures, however, did not match the excuses given or the resources that had been sent, and he would certainly turn his attention to those lords later, since he intended to reward those who had contributed the most resources by reducing their taxes. Those who had done the opposite would receive the opposite treatment, along with a reminder that they had failed to help the realm when it needed them most.
Even so, he had managed to gather enough resources to sustain all of the more than two hundred and fifty thousand men who would be fighting at the Wall for an entire year.
Around two hundred maesters had been recruited and sent by the Citadel itself to help, as a form of apology for what the order had done.
There was no way they could be forgiven so easily, but at least he would make use of that resource as long as they did not do anything foolish. The Citadel would be dealt with later and would certainly be reformed. All the archmaesters involved in the conspiracy were already dead, one way or another. For now, his priority was facing the dead.
The stockpile of dragonglass had also become enormous. The mining effort using the people of the capital had proven efficient, and there were thousands of blacksmiths working to forge arrowheads, spearheads, and other weapons from Dragonstone all the way to the Wall itself.
So, this would be the last time Daemon remained in the capital as king. There were still many duties for the various lords throughout the Seven Kingdoms, but from that moment on, he would focus exclusively on the war.
In any case, he needed to appoint someone to take care of the capital in his place. In the end, he left the capital under the care of Maester Mervyn and his Kingsguard, Clegane. The young Lord Darry and Lord Velaryon would remain in King's Landing, along with many ladies and other men who were unable to travel north.
Jon would be keeping an eye on the capital through his other eyes regardless. And he wasn't worried about losing anything of value, after all, there was nothing valuable left to steal. The only things he kept were the thrones, with the Vale's throne being placed last among the rows, on either side of the Iron Throne. After all, he would not leave the Vale without taking that final throne as well, completing the collection.
Daemon was already ready to depart, but he still needed a few more things finished in his solar while signing the last of the documents.
It was at that moment that the door opened. Val entered the room, with Marwyn waiting for the last documents.
"Is everything ready?"
"Yes. I just had to finish this," Daemon replied to his lover as he placed his final signature on the document and handed it to Marwyn.
Then he headed downstairs with the blonde, who was already prepared, wearing simple clothes and a coat against the cold wind. Daemon was dressed the same way, since most of his belongings were stored within his dimensional space, along with his armor and weapons.
They rode to the Dragonpit, where Viridrax stood with a saddle fastened across his back, something Daemon had arranged a few weeks earlier, as he had grown tired of flying directly on the dragon's back. Now, they each had their own saddles.
He had commissioned saddles for Viridrax, Winter, and Daenerys's Nyx, and he had already delivered hers during his visit to the North. They had installed it on Nyx, although Daenerys still had not flown on her dragon.
Daemon still needed to recreate the Order of the Dragon Knights to take care of his dragons, but that would have to wait for another time as well. For now, there was a war to fight. Probably the last one of his life.
Viridrax roared as Daemon mounted him, adjusting the saddle before launching into the sky with Winter close behind. From the ground, he could still hear the cheers of the people.
Everyone already knew about the war in the North, so they were all rooting for the king and the men of Westeros against the monsters.
Meanwhile, one week before these events, Lord Stark let out a sigh as he packed his belongings to finally depart for the North. Lords and mounted men awaited him in the courtyard as he emerged from the castle.
His family had gathered to say goodbye. Arya, Sansa, and Rickon had tears in their eyes, while sadness was also evident in the expressions of Bran and Robb.
"It seems I'll finally have to go," he said, embracing each of his children with heartfelt emotion.
Everyone knew that this was a one-way journey. The moment Lord Stark left Winterfell, he would never return as the Lord of Winterfell. He would head to the Night's Watch to take his vows and join the order for the rest of his days. That was the agreement he had made with Daemon, and he also felt obligated to honor it.
"You will take good care of Winterfell and the North. The North saw you fighting in the south, and they will trust you now. You are the Lord of Winterfell now, Robb. I'm proud of you..." Lord Stark said as Robb nodded, embracing his father.
He had spent all that time after they returned listening to his father and learning the last things he could from him. Now, Ned would depart for the Wall, from where he would never return. Robb was sad, of course, but there was nothing he could do. He felt conflicted about all of it, but it was the king's order, and his father insisted that this was what he truly wanted.
Lord Stark stepped back slightly from his children.
"It's not as though I'll never see you again. I just won't be around as much anymore. But your uncle and I will visit whenever we can. If the gods are good, I'll still see my grandchildren and great-grandchildren," he said.
Everyone nodded. Lord Stark had also settled the matter of his children's marriages. Robb would marry the eldest granddaughter of the Manderlys, Wynafryd Manderly. She would become the Lady of Winterfell, and her sister would inherit White Harbor, since what the Starks needed now was to strengthen the North's bonds.
There had also been discussions between Sansa and Harrold Hardyng of the Vale. After the war, their betrothal would likely be made official, as the boy, now the new heir to the Eyrie, had proven to be someone Sansa had grown fond of during the time she spent in the Vale.
Bran was a rather delicate matter... Edmure had left no descendants, and Lysa's son was a bastard, leaving only Catelyn's children.
Brynden had arrived at Winterfell a week earlier, where he revealed his plans for the future, since the king himself had agreed to them. Bran would officially become the future Lord of Riverrun. Brynden tried to persuade the boy to marry someone from the Riverlands; there was a Blackwood girl around Arya's age. But Bran refused. He wanted to marry the Reed girl. In the end, Ned and Brynden agreed to accept the boy's request.
Arya, on the other hand, refused any conversation about marriage. Even so, Lord Stark noticed that she and Gendry had grown very close, with Arya visiting his workshop every day to talk and spend time together whenever they could.
Daemon said he already knew about it. He even claimed that he had caught them kissing. To Lord Stark's surprise, it was Daemon himself who made a proposal. Knowing that Arya would never agree to marry any nobleman, perhaps he could legitimize Gendry Baratheon and marry the two of them.
Rickon was still far too young for Lord Stark to think much about his future, but Daemon had mentioned the Baratheon girl. Perhaps a marriage between the two of them in the future would not be impossible.
While discussing these matters with Lord Stark, Daemon also did not stop thinking about the conquered territories and those that still remained vacant.
Val was now pregnant, and he intended to place some of his children in the conquered territories, along with the children of Ygritte and Lucis.
He would also need to reorganize Skagos, since the island was still quite disorganized, and he wanted it for himself. He wanted to establish a new seat on the island, with a massive port. He also had Harrenhal, the Twins, Casterly Rock, the Westerlands, the Iron Islands, Skagos, and other unclaimed lands. The only places he could not claim were Highgarden and Sunspear, as they had to belong to someone with the blood of the ancient families.
Daemon intended to appoint only temporary lords to each place he could claim in the future because he wanted to grant most of those territories to his children someday. They would marry people from their respective regions, as none of his children would ever know want.
Dragonstone would belong to the heir to the Iron Throne, restoring the Targaryen tradition in which the heir was also the Lord of Dragonstone, and Daenerys's descendants would have access to the dragons.
In any case, Lord Stark finished saying his farewells to everyone and headed for his horse. Everyone else, including Brynden and a large contingent of soldiers from the Riverlands, the free folk, and the North, finally departed through the gates of Winterfell. The children of the forest were with them as well.
Returning to the present day, Daemon and Val arrived at Winterfell after several hours of flying.
Daemon was inside Robb's solar as they discussed a few more details. They too would soon be heading north.
Ever since arriving, Val had remained by her sister's side the entire time, and the two had not separated since discovering the pregnancy while also caring for Dalla's son.
At the same time, Daemon found Ygritte in Winterfell, waiting for him ever since he had arrived in the North and come with Mance to the Stark seat.
Lafy, Luci's brother, had also returned from King's Landing along with the other members of the free folk and had already settled in Winterfell. Lucis was happy to see her brother again, and he spent his days training with Bran, who had become his rival in the courtyard. But Lafy held the advantage, defeating him. Bran was still spending the last few moons recovering from his surgery and devoted more of his time to governing Winterfell and handling the affairs of the realm through his warg abilities and greensight than practicing in the courtyard...
Before meeting his wife, Daemon went to see Shireen Baratheon. He had cured the girl two weeks earlier, but because he had needed to remove all the skin covered by the greyscale, she had been forced to remain in bed for those entire two weeks.
"How are you feeling?" Daemon asked.
The girl was in her room with her mother, who was reading a book beside her. She looked at Daemon, who gestured with his hand for her not to make any sudden movements, allowing the girl to remain lying down while her mother bowed to him.
"Your Majesty," Lady Selyse said.
Stannis was already in the North as well after spending a moon at Storm's End, though he never even visited Winterfell. He went straight to the Wall, where he continued organizing the men.
Daemon examined the girl. Her skin was still somewhat red, but thanks to the spriggans, her recovery had progressed considerably. In another two weeks, her skin would have returned to its normal tone. The girl was naturally pale, and it wasn't as though she could get much sun in the North, so her skin would not look much different from the areas that had never been affected.
After that, Daemon went to the kennels.
There, he found several direwolf pups. The she-wolf Ghost had impregnated had given birth about three weeks earlier. He found the four pups nursing as he observed the entire litter. There were also two other females pregnant by the direwolves. He now possessed a considerable number of them, enough to take some to the war while leaving others at Winterfell.
This female was another one Ghost had impregnated, something quite common since he was the alpha of the pack. As for the third female, she had been impregnated by another direwolf.
Daemon also found Ghost, who immediately ran over to him the moment he saw him.
"Well... two of these are practically already spoken for," Daemon murmured as he looked at the four pups.
Two of the pups would be for his two children, one who would be born in a moon and the other in nearly eight moons.
In any case, he remained there for a while, and afterward found his wife walking around with Barristan Selmy following closely behind her. He decided to go over to her, and they talked.
Daemon would not miss the birth of his child unless the dead decided to attack. Even then, for him it would only be a short flight back to Winterfell on his dragons.
Daenerys had said that if the dead did not attack first, she would also mount her dragon and fight.
Daemon wanted to refuse, but the girl insisted. She would take care of Aegon, the name they had chosen if it were a boy, for as long as she could. After that, she would mount Nyx and head to the battlefield because she needed to help. After all, she was the queen as well.
Daemon did not like the idea, but he could also understand his wife. She was a dragon just as much as he was, and he could not simply stop her. He did not want her to be treated as someone fragile. It would be selfish of him to keep her confined simply out of concern.
She wanted to do her part. She did not want to be merely the queen who waited for her husband to do everything while she wore a crown. Not that anyone would say such a thing, but Daemon felt that Daenerys did not want to give people the opportunity to think that way. She also wanted to help him and show the realm that she was the queen.
