Chapter 4 - Chapter 3

"It was-" You lick your lips, pausing to find the correct phrasing. "-awkward."

"Awkward?" Katsuki held back the chuckle. "How so?"

"It's just..." You sigh stripping your jacket. "...Midoriya just expects me to accept him as my brother-"

You walk to the closet in search of a change of clothes, Katsuki leans against the desk listening as his eyes fell to the floor, he did a double take spotting one of Mina's bright red magazines.

He was going to kill her.

"-I understand he is technically my stepbrother but that doesn't automatically entitle him to a relationship." You continued as you changed into pajama's while your back was turned, Katsuki kicked the magazine under the bed. "He had years to adjust to the concept of having a sibling but thinks that I should just accept it and I-I don't think I can."

"Well-" Katsuki pushes himself off the desk, "-whatever you decide, I'm sure the nerd will understand in his own way."

"Yeah." You exhale, as you do Katsuki catches on to your tense demeanor. He pulled his lips into a thin line, eyes glued to you as he took a breath to test the waters.

"You went to dinner after your therapy appointment, right?"

"Yes."

"And how did it go?" Katsuki's glowing emerald eyes studied every move you made.

"I..." He could hear you struggling to open to him, he brought his hand to rest against your arm, it warmed him to his core, almost as if life was being breathed into him seeing you taking the tattered steps to confide in him. "...it feels like I am being torn apart."

"What-!?" Katsuki instantly alarmed, "-are you ok, what happened, I'm going to kill that therapist!"

"It's not like that." You reinsured him, "I'm physically fine." You huff.

"Physically?" Katsuki questioned.

"It's like...all the broken pieces that never got to heal are all fighting to come to the surface."

"I don't...I don't understand." Katsuki frowns, hating the fact he couldn't relate to you.

"The kid whose childhood was stolen, is searching for something I don't think I can ever have, while the girl trapped inside a collar is seeking revenge but all I want to do is find peace and I-I don't know which part will succeed, it feels like I'm losing a fight I can't win-!"

"Hey." Katsuki pulls you into him, wrapping you so tight all you could feel was him, all your spiraling mind could think of was him. You blinked the tears away as you exhaled, matching his breathing, for the moment, he sooths the storm circling inside your mind.

"No matter what happens-" Katsuki muttered into your hair, "-whatever gets thrown at us, it's going to be ok, because I am right here and I'm not going anywhere. I promised I would never let anything happen to you and I will make damn sure that's a promise I don't break."

"Katsuki..."

"What did Shiro say about any of this?" Katsuki wonders, causing an eye roll from you.

"He just said to kick whoever is in my way in the balls."

"Yeah-" Katsuki smiles, "-that sounds like him, what about Gray?"

Silence.

Katsuki pulls slightly away, gazing at your stone expression.

"You didn't talk to him?" Katsuki searches your face. "You know how he feels about that-!"

"I couldn't!" You snapped, backing out of the blonds grasp.

"What do you mean you couldn't?" Katsuki steps closer to you. "Gray will be pissed when he finds out you didn't call him-"

"He doesn't need to hear me whining about my bullshit." You shrug.

"It's not bullshit-" Katsuki catches you from walking away, "-this is your mental health we are talking about, it's important!"

"No-"

"I'm calling him." Katsuki declares, pulling his phone from his pocket.

"Don't-!" You bite, going to rip it from his grasp but Katsuki pulls away, the look of shock and confusion clear on his face from your abrasive actions. "-you can't...you can't call him."

"Why?"

"Because...his kid is sick."

"Sick?" Katsuki blinks, "I'm sure he will have a few minutes for you-"

"No." You shake your head, "He has enough to deal with, I'm not going to load him up with more shit to worry about."

"What's going on?"

You sigh, gaze falling from his face and onto the floor for a long moment before looking back to your boyfriend.

"The doctors think its cancer."

"C-Cancer!?"

"They are doing more tests to confirm it." You swallow the lump in your throat as you aggressively try to push away the claws tearing you apart at the seams.

"When...When did you find all this out?"

"This morning when he called me."

"Why didn't you tell me!?" Katsuki accused.

"Because I walked right into Dr. Aimi's office and then went to Dad's, it's not like I could have just sent you a text saying my niece might or might not have cancer, I think that's a conversation you need to have with someone face to face!"

"(y/n)..." Katsuki hugged you, shoving your face into his neck. "...I'm so sorry, when are you going to visit, I'll come with you-"

"I'm not going to visit." You blankly reply, causing Katsuki to shoot up right.

"What!?" He exclaimed, "How-How the hell can you not-!?"

"Gray wants it to be just him and Renata at the hospital, Shiro and I already tried. Something about the spread of germs or something, I don't know."

"...I'm sorry..." The words felt like he was on autopilot.

"You already said that." You pointed out.

"I know, I-I don't know what else to say."

"I didn't either." You weakly smile, looking off into space. "They might move up the wedding, they don't know how long she'll be around."

"(y/n)..."

"I-I just really want to sleep." You fake a smile, clearing the emotion from your voice ignoring Katsuki's gaze.

"Yeah." Katsuki nods, "Let's head to bed."

"It's early even for you." You struggled to form the joke.

"Yeah well-" Katsuki breathes, "-I feel like an early night."

You didn't argue, you just crawled into bed, the event of the day weighed on your shoulders as your head hit the pillow. Katsuki moved in beside you, pulling you tightly against him, letting you feel anchored, his airtight grip around your body kept you grounded.

Katsuki knew Shiro was handling this worse than you were, the red eyed hero adjusted his grip as he pulled the blanket over the two of you, as he held you, he could almost feel your world beginning to break apart again, and he had no idea how he could shield you from something like this.

As sleep alluded him, Katsuki concluded he couldn't protect you the way he wanted to, all he could do was be here, and when you awoke, he was going to make it the best damn Valentine's he could do.
