_POV: Juma_
Peace lasted 47 days.
47 days of no alarms.
47 days of kids playing in the streets of the Tome.
47 days where the only thing we fought was Kwesi trying to charge people for water.
The Tome wasn't a base anymore. It was a city.
Made of metal, glass, and sand.
Pandora's dynamics buildings torn down and rebuilt. Crimson Sky pavilions on the east side.
Refugees from Lagos, Nairobi, Addis, Dakar, Cairo. All of them.
They called us "The 12". Some called us gods. We hated that.
Sango Jr was walking again.
He trained every morning at 4am. Lightning in his hands, but softer now.
"My father was a monster," he told me one night. "I'm not going to be."
Tsehay built an arena. "For training. And for when we get bored."
Ọmọ started a hunting school.
Nala taught kids how to talk to the ocean.
Fatima and Nala turned the desert around us green.
Amina ran a hospital.
Chike made vaccines.
Zainab ran the maps.
Dele and I ran patrols.
Kunle... Kunle was always in the forge.
And Old Taju?
Old Taju sat at the gate, carving. Same mask. New lines.
"We won," Dele said on day 46. We were on the roof, watching stars.
"For now," I said.
I should've kept my mouth shut.
*THE FIRST CRACK*
It happened at 3:17am.
I woke up choking.
Not on air. On threads.
Thousands of them. All over the sky. Snapping.
I ran to the war room.
Zainab was already there. Map glowing.
"Tell me you see it," she said.
Above the Atlantic. Where we closed the Gate.
One star was gone.
Not black. Gone. Like someone erased it.
"Gate status," I said.
"1%," the console said. "Error. Gate status 1%."
"It was 0%," Zainab whispered. "For 47 days it was 0%."
The door opened. Everyone came in.
Even Sango Jr. Even Old Taju.
Sango Jr looked at the sky. Lightning sparked off him.
"It's him," he said. "Or what's left of him."
"Shango's dead," Tsehay said. "We watched him turn to dust."
"His mask isn't," Sango Jr said. "And masks remember."
Old Taju didn't say anything. He just kept carving.
We didn't sleep for 3 days.
We reinforced the Tome.
Kunle put shields up.
Iyanu made wind walls.
Nala and Fatima made the ocean around Africa rise 10 meters. "Just in case."
Ọmọ set traps in the desert for 100km.
Kwesi weaponized everything. "This toaster is now a missile."
Crimson Sky sent a messenger. Elder Bai Chen himself.
"We felt it too," he said. "The sky is wrong.
Our Sect Master says: The Court of the Throne is moving."
"The who?" I asked.
"The ones who wear masks," Bai Chen said. "The ones older than sects.
They eat worlds."
He left 20 cultivators behind. "To help. Or to die with you."
We took the help.
On day 3, it came
It wasn't a ship.
It was a bird.
Made of bone. No feathers. Eyes like coals.
It flew through our shields like they weren't there.
Landed on the war table.
Dropped a letter.
And turned to dust.
The letter unfolded itself.
`TO THE TOME OF ASCENDANT`
`FROM THE COURT OF THE THRONE`
`YOU CLOSED THE DOOR. GOOD.`
`WE LIKE A CHALLENGE.`
`YOU HAVE 12.`
`WE HAVE 12,000.`
`WE HAVE WORLDS.`
`YOU HAVE SAND.`
`SEE YOU AT THE CROSSROADS.`
`BRING THE SPEAR.`
`- THE MASKED KING`
Under it: a mask. Cracked down the middle.
12 stars around it.
And when I looked at it, I saw threads.
12,000 threads. All leading to us.
"The Masked King," Old Taju said. His voice was gravel.
"Shango's master. The one who gave him the first mask."
"Is he a god?" Amina asked.
Old Taju shook his head. "Worse. He's what's left after a god dies hungry."
Sango Jr crushed the table with his hand.
"He wants war."
"Then he gets war," Kunle said.
Old Taju looked at me. "Juma. How long?"
I looked at the threads.
"2 weeks. Maybe 14 days. Then they knock."
"Then we have 14 days," Kunle said. "To get ready to fight a god."
Outside, the missing star pulsed once.
Like an eye opening.
POV: Kunle
14 days.
That's what we had.
14 days to turn 12 demigods into an army.
Pandora's dynamics was gone, but their shipyards weren't.
Kwesi took them.
"Congratulations," he told the pandora engineers. "You now work for the good guys. Benefits include not dying."
In 3 days he had 40 ships.
Painted black and gold. "Tome Fleet" on the side.
He even made one shaped like a spider. "For morale."
Crimson Sky gave us Qi cannons.
"Don't ask where we got them," Bai Chen said.
Nala and Fatima raised the ocean.
A moat. 50km wide. Around the Tome.
"Let them swim," Nala said
We broke ourselves.
Sango Jr and I sparred until the desert was glass.
He could call lightning from orbit now. I could make metal fly.
Tsehay fought 20 Crimson Sky cultivators at once. Won.
Ọmọ learned to shoot fate. "If I hit your thread, you trip in 5 seconds."
Dele learned to hold lightning for 10 minutes without blinking.
Iyanu learned to take the air out of a 1km radius.
Zainab learned to put illusions in 1000 minds.
Amina learned to bring people back from the edge.
Chike learned plagues that only hit Wosam DNA.
Fatima and Nala learned to make tsunamis on command.
Juma... Juma stopped sleeping. He watched threads.
And me?
I built.
The forge had never been hotter.
I took the 12 tokens.
Nairobi's coin. Addis' bracelet. Cairo's scarab. Dakar's pearl.
Lagos, Accra, Sahara, and the 5 others.
Melted them.
"This is stupid," Kwesi said. "Those are collectibles."
"This is war," I said.
For 48 hours I didn't sleep.
Metal, gold, coral, stone. All of it.
I folded it 1000 times.
I quenched it in Nala's ocean and Dele's lightning.
On day 10, it was done.
A spear.
3 meters.
Shaft of star-metal. Head of 12 colors.
And in the center: a core that pulsed like a heart.
"The Spear of Ascendant," I said. "If one of us falls, the power goes to the rest."
Sango Jr picked it up. It didn't burn him.
"It accepts us," he said. "All 12."
He gave it back to me.
"You keep it. Until we need it."
The Guardians came.
Nairobi's lion. "FOR THE HUNT."
Cairo's jackal. "FOR THE DEAD."
Dakar's tide-woman. "FOR THE LIVING."
They didn't speak much. They just stood at the walls.
Old Taju talked to each of them.
When he came back, he looked older.
"They're scared," he said. "And Guardians don't get scared."
On day 13, we got another message.
Not a letter.
A sound.
Like someone knocking on glass.
From the sky.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
"That's them," Juma said. "Testing the door."
We were all on the wall at dawn.
The sky was clear.
Too clear.
Then it cracked.
Not like glass. Like skin.
A line. Black.
And from it: light. Wrong light.
Then the ships.
First 10.
Then 100.
Then 1000.
Black hulls. Mask symbols.
And at the front: the big one.
A city-ship.
And on the deck: a throne.
And on the throne: The Masked King.
He was 4 meters tall.
Armor made of masks. Layered.
And his mask had 12 eyes. All open.
He didn't speak at first.
He just looked at us.
At the Tome.
At the 12 of us standing on the wall.
Then he stood.
His voice didn't come from his mouth.
It came from the sky. From the sand. From our bones.
"YOU CLOSED MY DOOR."
The desert shook.
"YOU KILLED MY DOG."
Ships moved forward.
"NOW I WILL destroy all that you consider dear"
He raised his hand.
Behind him, 12,000 ships raised weapons.
Old Taju stepped forward. Stick in hand. Mask on his face now.
"Kids," he said. "This is it."
Sango Jr picked up the Spear.
"No," he said. "This is us."
All 12 of us stepped to the edge.
Behind us: a city of 2 million people.
Ahead of us: an empire.
Above us: stars that had gone dark.
The Masked King smiled. You could see it in the mask.
"LET US BEGIN."
And he dropped his hand.
The first shot fired.
