Michelle Quinn announced she was quitting. She returned to her desk, immediately typed up a resignation letter, and rushed it over to the Human Resources department.
"Secretary Quinn, are you sure you want to resign? If you quit now, you'll have to pay a breach of contract fee."
The head of the HR department moved his mouse, pulling up a scanned copy of a contract on his computer.
"Your employment contract states that the Lawson Group gave you a salary advance of five million. You must work for the Lawson Group for a minimum of five years. Failure to do so is considered a breach of contract, and the penalty is double that amount—ten million."
Michelle Quinn was stunned. She lunged for the monitor to see for herself. The day she signed it, she hadn't read the clauses in the addendum carefully at all; she'd assumed it was just a standard employment contract.
"Secretary Quinn, it's company time. Please return to your post."
