Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Demon’s Last Breath

The night sky burned with violence.

A storm of shadows tore across a land that no human had ever seen — a world where the ground itself pulsed like a living heart and the air smelled of ash and decay.

A demon was running.

His breath came out in ragged bursts as dark blood trailed behind him, burning the cracked earth wherever it touched. His once-majestic wings were torn apart, reduced to mangled fragments hanging uselessly behind him.

Behind him, the hunters followed.

Shapes twisted through the darkness — other demons.

Their forms were unnatural, shifting between flesh and shadow, their hollow eyes glowing with a hunger far more savage than beasts.

They were not chasing him out of revenge.

They were chasing him because he was valuable.

Because he was powerful.

Because devouring him would grant them strength beyond imagination.

A monstrous claw tore through the air and grazed his back.

Flesh split open.

Black flames erupted from the wound as the demon stumbled forward, barely maintaining balance.

He could feel it.

His body was reaching its limit.

If they caught him, his existence would end here — consumed, forgotten, reduced to nothing but stolen power inside another creature.

No.

That could not happen.

Not like this.

Not after everything he had done.

The demon raised a trembling hand.

Dark energy gathered at his fingertips, unstable and flickering.

A forbidden technique.

One that would tear space itself open.

The air screamed.

Reality fractured like shattered glass as a swirling vortex of distorted light appeared before him.

A portal.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Unknown.

But better than certain death.

The pursuing demons lunged forward, sensing his escape.

One of them let out a piercing shriek that echoed across the broken landscape.

"YOU CANNOT ESCAPE YOUR FATE!"

The wounded demon gave a faint smile.

"Fate… is something I have broken before."

With the last of his strength, he threw himself into the portal.

Darkness consumed him.

And the portal collapsed violently behind him.

The hunters arrived moments too late.

Their roars of frustration echoed into the endless void.

Their prey was gone.

For now.

Cold air struck his skin.

The demon crashed violently onto solid ground.

Stone.

Concrete.

A strange scent filled his senses.

Clean.

Unfamiliar.

He forced his heavy eyelids open.

Above him was a sky… but it was different.

No eternal crimson glow.

No burning clouds.

Just darkness.

Calm.

Silent.

He had arrived somewhere else.

Another world.

His body screamed in agony as he tried to move.

He could feel the damage.

Deep wounds across his torso.

Fractured bones.

Torn muscles.

His power was nearly depleted.

If he did not recover soon… he would truly die.

And then—

Footsteps.

Light.

Careless.

Unaware.

A human.

The demon slowly turned his head.

A boy stood a short distance away, frozen in place.

He looked young.

Seventeen… maybe eighteen.

Ordinary clothes.

Ordinary presence.

Completely unaware of the terror standing before him.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The boy's eyes widened as he tried to understand what he was seeing.

The creature before him was not human.

Its body was partially covered in dark, cracked armor-like skin.

Its eyes glowed faintly red in the night.

Something primal inside the boy screamed at him to run.

But fear had rooted him in place.

The demon stared back.

Weak.

Starving.

Injured.

But still dangerous.

Humans were fragile creatures.

Their bodies weak.

But their souls…

Their souls contained energy.

Life.

Strength.

If consumed, even a damaged demon could recover.

Slowly, painfully, the demon pushed himself to his feet.

His movements were unstable.

But the hunger was stronger than the pain.

"You…"

His voice sounded broken, like glass grinding together.

"…will keep me alive."

The boy finally stepped back.

"What… what are you…?"

The demon did not answer.

He moved forward.

One step.

Another.

The air grew heavy.

The boy's heart pounded violently in his chest.

Every instinct told him the same thing.

Fight.

Or die.

He had been in fights before.

Schoolyard violence.

Street conflicts.

Moments where backing down only made things worse.

But this…

This was different.

This was life or death.

The demon lunged.

The boy reacted on instinct.

He dodged sideways as a claw sliced through the space where his head had been moments before.

The force of the attack shattered the concrete wall behind him.

Debris scattered everywhere.

The boy's breathing became sharp and fast.

His body moved before his mind could catch up.

Adrenaline flooded his veins.

The demon attacked again.

Faster this time.

Despite his injuries, his strength was overwhelming.

The boy grabbed a broken metal pipe lying near the alley wall and swung it with everything he had.

The pipe struck the demon's arm.

A metallic sound echoed.

It barely did anything.

But it created distance.

That was enough.

The demon staggered slightly.

His wounds were slowing him down.

Good.

That meant he could be hurt.

The boy's mind raced.

Running would only delay death.

This creature would chase him.

He had to survive.

He had to fight.

The demon attacked once more, this time slower, his movements clearly strained.

The boy stepped forward instead of backward.

Surprising even himself.

The pipe struck the demon's wounded torso.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

A crack appeared in the dark armored flesh.

The demon let out a low growl.

Pain.

Real pain.

The boy didn't stop.

Fear turned into desperate determination.

He swung again, aiming directly at the same damaged area.

The pipe pierced through.

Dark blood splashed across his hands.

The demon froze.

His glowing eyes widened slightly.

For a brief moment… silence.

Then his body began to collapse.

The boy stumbled backward, gasping for air.

"I… I…"

He couldn't process what had just happened.

The demon fell to one knee.

His form began to distort.

Cracks of glowing red light spread across his skin.

"…interesting…" the demon whispered weakly.

His body began to break apart into fragments of dark energy.

The boy tried to step back.

But it was too late.

The energy surged forward violently.

Like smoke pulled into a vacuum.

It rushed directly into him.

Through his skin.

Through his breath.

Through his eyes.

Cold.

Burning.

Heavy.

Something ancient flooded into his body.

His vision blurred violently.

His heart pounded like a war drum.

A voice… faint and distant… echoed inside his mind.

"…survive…"

Pain erupted across every nerve.

He collapsed onto the cold ground.

Darkness consumed everything.

----------

Morning light filtered through the window.

The boy's eyes slowly opened.

For a few seconds, everything felt normal.

Quiet.

Still.

Safe.

Then the memories returned.

The creature.

The fight.

The blood.

His body tensed as he quickly sat up.

Pain shot through his muscles.

Bruises covered his arms.

Cuts lined his hands.

It hadn't been a dream.

He looked down at himself, breathing heavily.

Still alive.

"…How…?"

Fragments of last night replayed in his mind.

Every movement.

Every strike.

Every second that should have killed him.

And yet…

He had survived.

Barely.

He clenched his fist slowly.

A strange sensation pulsed beneath his skin.

Faint.

Unfamiliar.

But real.

Something had changed.

He could feel it.

But he didn't understand it.

Not yet.

Outside, the world continued as if nothing had happened.

Cars passed.

People talked.

Life moved forward.

Completely unaware that something dangerous had entered their world.

And it now lived inside him.

The boy took a slow breath.

Whatever had happened…

Whatever that creature was…

His life was no longer normal.

And deep within him, something waited silently.

Watching.

Recovering.

Growing.

The last breath of a demon had not been the end.

It had been the beginning.
