That's the Best for Him
He walked toward me, calm and sure, like someone used to getting answers. For a second, my body wanted to step back. I didn't. I stayed where I was and met his eyes.
"Miss Alayna?"
Armand stopped in front of me. He looked wrong here. Too neat for these halls. Too expensive for the smell of antiseptic and rush. His face was pale, drawn tight with worry.
"Hello, Mr. Armand," I said as I adjusted my grip on the stack of linens in my arms.
He blinked, clearly struggling to reconcile the sight of me in a plain white coat, hair pinned back, holding soiled sheets.
"Its… good to see you. What… are you doing here?" he asked at last, his voice carefully neutral.
Something firm settled in my chest.
"This is where I'm supposed to be. As someone who has medical background." I nodded at the linens. "What about you? Is someone sick?"
His shoulders dropped, like he had been holding them up by force.
