Chapter 31 - [Chapter 29]

----

That night, the house was quiet again.

Not fully.

The Seo residence was never fully quiet anymore.

There was the soft hum of the refrigerator.

The faint creak of the building settling.

The occasional rustle of a cat shifting position.

Kayden's low, irritated huff from where he had claimed a cushion near the foot of Jiwoo's bed, pretending he had not chosen the spot because it allowed him to hear if Jiwoo's breathing changed.

Jiwoo slept deeply.

He had spent the evening laughing, arguing gently with Jisuk, making sure Wooin had eaten enough, and apologizing to Kayden three separate times for Jisuk's snack-related crimes.

By the time Jisuk and Wooin left, Jiwoo had looked exhausted but happy.

Asuka had checked Jiwoo health before she had sent him to bed.

Kayden had agreed, loudly, that Jiwoo needed rest.

Then immediately complained that Jiwoo was too easy to tire out.

Then complained when Jiwoo apologized.

Then complained when Asuka told him he complained too much.

A normal night.

A warm one.

Asuka fell asleep later than everyone else.

She sat by the window first, bandages loosened around her face, sky-blue eyes turned toward the dark street below.

Her body was still remembering training.

Drive.

Impact.

Fire.

Mask.

Awakener first.

She let Kayden's words settle into her bones.

Then she slept.

And the future opened.

Flames.

Not hers.

Not clean.

Not controlled.

Violent fire licked across concrete and metal, orange-red and hungry, twisting around a narrow street where shadows scattered beneath broken streetlights.

Smoke crawled along the ground.

Someone coughed.

Jiwoo.

Asuka's awareness sharpened.

She saw him half-crouched, one hand braced against the road, uniform jacket singed at the edge. Blood dotted the corner of his mouth, not much, but enough to make her entire soul go cold.

Jisuk stood ahead of him, wind circling his shoulders.

His expression was sharp.

Angry.

A little afraid, though he would rather bite his own tongue than admit it.

Wooin stood on the other side, telekinetic pressure warping the air around small pieces of rubble scattered across the road.

They were not alone.

Two men stood in the firelight.

Brothers.

Their faces were similar enough that it was obvious, though one looked broader, heavier, with a smile that showed too many teeth. The other was leaner, eyes colder, flame curling lazily around his fingers like a pet waiting to be unleashed.

Klein.

The name came with the vision.

Famous criminals.

Fire-type awakeners.

Dangerous not because they had power alone, but because they enjoyed using it.

One laughed.

The sound cracked through the heat.

"Kids?"

The broader one tilted his head, amused.

"They sent kids?"

Jisuk's jaw tightened.

"Shut up."

His wind surged.

The flame answered.

The brothers moved.

Fire exploded outward.

Jiwoo vanished forward in a burst of speed.

Too fast for an ordinary eye.

Not fast enough.

A whip of flame cut across his path.

He twisted mid-step, narrowly avoiding the direct hit, but heat still caught his sleeve. He stumbled, rolled, recovered.

Good.

Better than before.

Kayden's training showed in the way he forced himself back up instead of freezing.

Asuka watched from inside the future, unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

Wooin lifted both hands.

Rubble shot toward the leaner brother.

The man smiled and burned through half of it before it reached him.

The rest curved under Wooin's control, changing angle sharply.

One piece struck the man's shoulder.

He stepped back.

Only one step.

But his smile faded.

Jisuk used that opening.

Wind gathered tight around his fist, and he dashed in, not as fast as Jiwoo, but sharper than most would expect. He struck with compressed air, aiming at the ribs.

The broader brother blocked.

Fire wrapped around his arm.

Wind and flame slammed together.

The pressure burst.

Jisuk was thrown backward.

Jiwoo caught him badly, both of them skidding across the ground.

"Jisuk!"

"I'm fine!" Jisuk snapped, though his sleeve smoked and his breathing hitched.

Wooin's eyes narrowed.

He shifted debris again.

Three angles this time.

One low.

One high.

One hidden behind smoke.

Good.

He was adapting.

Then the leaner Klein brother glanced toward him.

"Annoying."

Fire gathered at his palm.

Compressed.

Focused.

Too hot.

Too fast.

A bullet of flame shot toward Wooin.

Jiwoo moved.

Asuka's heart stopped.

Jiwoo threw himself between them.

He did not think.

Of course he did not.

Her brother was always like that.

Always soft.

Always brave.

Always stupid enough to make the world ache.

The fire struck—

No.

A thin ribbon of orange-yellow flame split through the vision.

Asuka saw herself.

Not fully.

A possibility.

A version.

She dropped between them, hoodie fluttering, bandages over her eyes, one hand lifted.

Her own flame met the Klein brother's fire.

Orange against red.

For one second, the two fires tangled.

Then Asuka's flame changed.

Not blue.

Not black.

Not anything that would reveal too much.

Just hotter.

Sharper.

Cleaner.

Her fire swallowed the incoming attack and twisted it upward, sending it into the sky where it burst harmlessly above the street like a dying flare.

Jiwoo stared.

"Asuka?"

Jisuk stared too.

"What the hell—"

Wooin's eyes widened, but he said nothing.

The Klein brothers looked at her.

The broader one laughed again.

"A fourth kid?"

The leaner one tilted his head.

"Fire-type."

Asuka's future-self stood still.

Calm.

Too calm.

A little dangerous.

She did not move like Haruka.

She did not move like she had in her previous world.

She moved like Kayden had taught her.

Feet grounded.

Core active.

Presence controlled.

A faint, believable leak of fire-type awakened power around her body.

The mask.

Speed and fire.

The broader brother grinned.

"Looks like this one's got some bite."

Asuka's hand lowered.

Flames curled once around her knuckles.

Orange-yellow.

Nothing more.

Then the vision fractured.

A dozen possibilities split apart.

Jiwoo charging.

Jisuk shouting.

Wooin bleeding from the temple.

Asuka stepping in only enough to redirect a fatal hit.

Kayden arriving too late to stop the first exchange but early enough to rage.

Shinhwa finding the aftermath.

Inhyuk's face dark with concern.

Jiyoung Yoo standing in a burned street, eyes sharp, wind silent around her.

The Klein brothers retreating.

Captured.

Escaping.

One injured.

Both injured.

Asuka's flames touching theirs, testing heat against heat.

A future where she overdid it and the street melted.

A future where she held back too much and Jiwoo's arm burned.

No.

No.

Her mind rejected that one.

The thread snapped.

Asuka woke with a sharp inhale.

Her eyes opened behind the bandages.

For a moment, she saw fire.

Red-orange light burned behind her eyelids even though the room was dark.

Her body was slick with sweat.

Her hand pressed over her face, palm covering the bandages as if she could shove the vision back into whatever place it had come from.

Her breathing was quiet.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

Beside her, the grey scarred cat lifted its head.

Across the room, Kayden's ears twitched.

He did not speak.

Not yet.

Jiwoo slept on.

Safe.

Breathing evenly.

Unburned.

Unhurt.

Here.

Asuka forced herself to inhale.

Then exhale.

Again.

Again.

The future settled into memory.

Not fixed.

Never completely fixed.

A possibility.

No.

Several.

But strong enough.

Close enough.

Likely enough.

The Klein brothers.

Famous criminals.

Fire-type awakeners.

Her brother.

Jisuk.

Wooin.

A fight they should not have been dragged into and yet somehow would be.

Asuka sat up slowly.

The blanket slipped from her shoulders.

Her hand remained over her face.

She knew they would not die.

The thread had not carried death.

Not for Jiwoo.

Not for Jisuk.

Not for Wooin.

That mattered.

It should have comforted her.

It did not.

Because not dying was such a small mercy.

There were so many ways to hurt without killing.

Burns.

Broken bones.

Fear.

Trauma.

A hesitation that followed someone into the next battle.

The next hallway.

The next night.

Asuka's fingers tightened over the bandages.

Her first instinct was simple.

Stop it.

Find the Klein brothers first.

End the threat before Jiwoo ever saw flame.

Before Jisuk ever had to stand in front of a criminal.

Before Wooin had to face another adult who treated power like permission to destroy.

Before Kayden had to arrive and find his students burned.

The instinct was clean.

Merciless.

Protective.

Easy.

Too easy.

Asuka lowered her hand.

The room came back into focus through cloth and shadow.

Jiwoo asleep.

Kayden watching her now, eyes narrowed, orange body still on the cushion.

The cats quiet.

The soft night around them.

Kayden's voice came low.

"Future?"

Asuka turned her bandaged face toward him.

For a moment, she did not answer.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

Kayden's gaze sharpened.

"Jiwoo?"

"Yes."

His tail lashed once.

"What happens?"

Asuka looked toward her brother.

"He fights."

Kayden's eyes narrowed further.

"With who?"

"The Klein brothers."

Kayden went very still.

That told her enough.

He knew the name.

Of course he did.

Kayden Break knew strong people, dangerous people, troublesome people. Criminals with enough reputation to reach him were not small threats.

"Those fire bastards?" he muttered.

Asuka's expression did not change.

"They are famous criminals."

"Yeah."

Kayden's voice was rougher now.

"Fire-type awakeners. Brothers. Annoying. Violent. They enjoy collateral damage."

Asuka's jaw tightened faintly.

Kayden noticed.

"You saw Jiwoo hurt?"

"A little."

His eyes flashed.

"Asuka."

"He does not die."

"That wasn't what I asked."

She was quiet.

Kayden stood.

The cushion dipped under his weight.

His cat body looked ridiculous in the dark.

Round.

Orange.

Soft.

His presence did not.

"Asuka."

She exhaled slowly.

"He is burned in some possibilities. Not severely if things follow the stronger threads."

Kayden's tail lashed again.

"Jisuk?"

"Hurt. Not dead."

"Wooin?"

"Hurt. Not dead."

Kayden cursed under his breath.

Asuka looked down at her hands.

"I can stop it."

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

The room went silent.

Her voice remained calm.

Too calm.

"I can find them before it happens. I can remove them from the equation."

Kayden stared at her.

The grey scarred cat pressed closer to her thigh, sensing something in the room shift.

Asuka's hands rested over her knees.

Still.

Gentle.

Those hands could burn hotter than the sun if she wished.

Could fold space.

Could stop time.

Could make arrival impossible.

Could end the Klein brothers before they ever understood they had entered the wrong future.

Kayden knew it.

Asuka knew it.

That was why the choice mattered.

Kayden's voice came slower.

"Is that what you're going to do?"

Asuka's fingers curled once.

Then relaxed.

"No."

Kayden watched her.

"I want to," she admitted.

The honesty scraped a little on the way out.

"But no."

"Why?"

"Because Oppa needs experience."

Kayden did not interrupt.

"Not because I want him hurt," Asuka said softly. "Never because of that. But he cannot grow if every danger disappears before he reaches it."

Her mouth tightened.

"He needs to understand what awakened fights are like. Not training. Not sparring. Not Jisuk being reckless or Wooin defending him. Real danger. Real opponents. People who will not stop because he is kind."

Kayden's expression shifted faintly.

Approval.

Reluctant.

Irritated.

But approval.

Asuka continued, "Jisuk and Wooin need it too."

"Do they?"

"Yes."

Her voice quieted.

"They are already involved with him. With us. This will not be the last time."

Kayden's eyes gleamed in the dark.

"You saw more?"

"Not clearly."

Asuka looked toward the window.

"Just the feeling."

A pressure.

A long road.

Mess after mess.

Names she did not know yet.

Organizations.

Schools.

Enemies.

Friends.

Places where Jiwoo's kindness would pull people in and danger would follow behind like a shadow that could not resist the light.

"This will not be the only mess we find ourselves in," she said.

Kayden gave a low huff.

"With Jiwoo? Obviously."

Despite herself, Asuka smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Kayden sat down again, but his body remained tense.

"So what will you do?"

Asuka's face became still.

"I will intervene."

Kayden's ears twitched.

"But?"

"I will not overdo it."

"That is vague."

"It is accurate."

"Asuka."

She turned toward him.

"I will let them fight. I will let Oppa make decisions. I will let Jisuk and Wooin use their own strength."

Her voice lowered.

"But I will not let them die."

Kayden's eyes sharpened.

"And if one of those brothers aims for a killing blow?"

"Then I stop it."

"If they aim to cripple?"

"I stop it."

"If they threaten civilians?"

"I stop it."

"If your brother is about to get burned badly?"

The room chilled.

Asuka's lips parted.

No sound came at first.

Then, quietly—

"I stop it."

Kayden held her gaze, even though the bandages covered her eyes.

"Good."

Her shoulders eased a fraction.

Not much.

A little.

Kayden looked toward Jiwoo.

"He needs experience," he said. "But you're right. There's no point in experience if it breaks him."

Asuka's expression softened.

Kayden clicked his tongue.

"Don't look at me like that."

"I am not looking."

"You are. Somehow."

"I see."

"I said don't start."

Her mouth curved faintly.

The grey cat settled against her side again.

For a moment, the fear loosened.

Then Asuka lifted one hand.

A small flame appeared above her palm.

Orange-yellow.

Quiet.

Controlled.

It lit the room just enough to throw faint warmth across her bandages.

Kayden watched.

The flame curled inward, then sharpened.

Not hotter yet.

Not blue.

Not black.

Just focused.

Asuka's voice was thoughtful.

"I am curious."

Kayden looked at her.

"How my flames will fare against theirs."

Kayden's mouth curved.

There it was.

That edge.

The one beneath the softness.

The part of her that did not merely fear danger.

The part that wanted to understand it.

Measure it.

Defeat it properly.

He understood that part.

Perhaps too well.

"They're experienced," Kayden said. "Their fire will be rougher than yours. More violent. They'll have tricks. Criminals who survive long enough to become famous usually do."

Asuka watched the flame twist.

"They enjoy collateral damage."

"Yes."

"Then their control has limits."

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

"Maybe. Or they simply don't care enough to restrain it."

"That is also a limit."

His mouth twitched.

"Good answer."

Asuka's flame brightened.

Only slightly.

The orange deepened toward gold.

"If they use fire as destruction, I can use fire as direction. Cut flow. Redirect oxygen. Fold heat away from civilians. Burn through their attacks at the narrowest point."

Kayden listened.

Her mind was already building the fight.

Not with panic.

With structure.

That was good.

Dangerous, but good.

"Don't get clever at the wrong time," he said.

"I know."

"You say that too easily."

"I know that too."

Kayden's eyes flattened.

"Asuka."

The flame vanished.

She lowered her hand.

"I will be careful."

"That means nothing in this house."

Her smile warmed faintly.

"Fair."

Kayden sighed.

Jiwoo shifted in his sleep.

Both of them went silent instantly.

Jiwoo turned onto his side, one hand curling near his pillow.

His breathing stayed even.

Still asleep.

Still safe.

Asuka looked at him for a long moment.

Her brother.

Her Oppa.

Kind enough to feed stray cats.

Brave enough to run toward danger.

Soft enough to apologize when others were cruel to him.

Strong enough to keep standing.

Not strong enough yet.

But he would be.

He had to be.

And Asuka would not cage him out of love.

Even if every instinct in her wanted to wrap Infinity around him and never let the world touch him again.

That was not protection.

That was fear.

She knew the difference.

She hated the difference.

Kayden's voice came quieter.

"You'll tell him?"

Asuka thought about it.

Then shook her head.

"Not yet."

Kayden's gaze sharpened.

"He should know if danger is coming."

"He should," Asuka agreed. "But if I tell him too early, he will worry. He will change how he moves. The future will shift."

Kayden accepted that reluctantly.

"Then tell me everything you remember."

Asuka nodded.

She described the street.

The fire.

The brothers' builds.

Their movement.

The way one compressed flames into bullets while the other used broader bursts.

Jiwoo's path.

Jisuk's wind.

Wooin's debris angles.

The moments where intervention mattered.

The moments where it did not.

Kayden listened without interrupting.

Fully awake now.

Fully serious.

No cat-like laziness.

No complaints.

Teacher.

Awakener.

Kayden Break.

When she finished, he was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said, "They can handle parts of it."

Asuka's fingers curled slightly.

"Yes."

"Not all of it."

"No."

"You stay hidden at first."

"Yes."

"If you reveal yourself, reveal only speed and fire."

"Yes."

"If you need to block a killing blow, do it in a way that looks like fire interception or movement. No Infinity unless absolutely necessary."

Asuka nodded.

"Agreed."

"If you use Blue, hide it under speed."

"Yes."

"If you have to use more—"

His eyes sharpened.

"Make sure no one sees."

Asuka's expression turned calm.

"Yes, Mr. Kayden."

Kayden studied her.

Then huffed.

"You really are troublesome."

"So I have heard."

"This is not praise."

"It can be."

"It cannot."

Her mouth curved.

Kayden looked away first.

The room settled again, though sleep did not return easily.

Asuka lay back down eventually, but her eyes remained open behind the bandages.

The future lingered.

Fire in the street.

Jiwoo coughing.

Jisuk's wind against flame.

Wooin's rubble burning midair.

Her own orange-yellow fire splitting through theirs.

Not too much.

Not too little.

A blade sheathed by choice.

A flame covered by a mask.

She breathed slowly.

Once.

Twice.

The grey cat curled against her side.

Kayden remained awake near Jiwoo's bed, facing the door.

Asuka knew without asking that he would not sleep much either.

The awakened world was beginning to move around them.

Small threads tightening.

Names approaching.

Danger taking shape.

The Klein brothers were only the next knot.

Not the last.

Not even close.

Asuka closed her hand lightly around the edge of her blanket.

She would allow her brother to grow.

She would allow her friends to fight.

She would allow the future to breathe.

But if the flames reached too far—

Her eyes gleamed faintly behind the bandages.

Then they would learn what fire looked like when it met Infinity's favorite daughter.
