Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Reunion and Resolve

As they gathered for breakfast, Alex couldn't help but reflect on those challenging years of separation.

Their family had endured a life of poverty and mediocrity, both their parents toiling tirelessly. It had been an existence marked by unwavering perseverance and resilience, especially in the wake of the cataclysms that had shaken the world.

After those earth-shattering events, countless families had been left in dire straits. Not just in America but across the globe, job opportunities were scarce, and the economy had crumbled.

Nevertheless, their father, David Thorn, had been a proud man who shielded his family from the pangs of poverty. He had laboured long hours at the local construction site, often juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Alex recalled the evenings when his father returned home, exhausted yet unwavering in his determination. His hands, roughened by a day's labour, bore witness to his relentless commitment to providing for his loved ones.

The dinner table had served as a sanctuary where they shared tales and aspirations, even in the face of the harsh realities of a world forever changed.

It appeared that the American government had turned a blind eye to the struggles of families like theirs. Assistance had been scarce, and the Thorns had relied on their own resilience and the support of their close-knit community to endure.

Looking at his mother and brother, Alex felt an immense gratitude for the sacrifices their father had made. He recognized that his father stood as a symbol of tenacity and determination, a role model for his sons to emulate.

"Your father," Sarah began, her voice carrying both pride and nostalgia, "he's an extraordinary man. Despite all the hardships we faced, he never wavered. He always told us that as long as we had each other, we could overcome anything."

John's eyes widened as he absorbed his mother's words, sensing admiration and love in her voice. Despite his young age during their last moments as a complete family, he had always looked up to their father.

Both their parents worked hard; Sarah was presently employed at a supermarket to supplement the family income.

She had taken on the job with unwavering determination, always placing her family's needs above all. Alex held deep respect for her strength and resilience.

As they sat down to breakfast, Alex's heart swelled with happiness and nostalgia.

Nine long years had passed since he had last seen his mother and brother. Tears welled in his eyes, but he blinked them back, determined not to reveal his emotions.

The aroma of freshly cooked breakfast filled the cosy dining hall as Alex settled at the worn wooden table.

His mother, Sarah, had prepared a hearty meal of scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and buttered toast. It was a simple breakfast, yet to Alex, it was a taste of home, a taste of the life he had left behind.

"Thank you, Mom," Alex said, offering his mother a warm smile as she placed a plate of food before him.

"You're welcome, dear," Sarah replied, her eyes brimming with maternal affection. She took a seat across from Alex and John, and the three of them began to eat in comfortable silence.

As he savoured the familiar flavours, memories of his previous life swirled in Alex's mind.

He couldn't help but recall the dungeons, betrayals, and the regret that had characterized his earlier existence. But in this new beginning, he had the chance to alter his destiny, shield his family, and seek justice against those who had wronged him.

Seeing Alex lost in thought, Sarah asked, breaking the silence, "Alex, are you feeling nervous about the Hunter Association test today?"

Alex nodded, his expression a blend of unwavering determination and a hint of lingering uncertainty.

"Indeed, Mom, I'm feeling a bit apprehensive. This is a momentous day for me, and I'm committed to ensuring that I excel in the upcoming test."

As he glanced at his family, warmth emanated from his smile, concealing the profound secret he held close to his heart. He was resolute in his decision to safeguard this hidden truth from everyone, even those closest to him.

'I must take the time to meticulously devise a well-thought-out plan for the future,' he mused inwardly.

Seated at the table, surrounded by the loving presence of his family, the atmosphere exuded palpable support and encouragement.

Sarah, comprehending her son's sentiments, reached across the table. Her hand found its place atop his, imparting a soothing touch—a silent reassurance of her unwavering faith in his abilities and her steadfast support.

"I have faith in you, Alex. You've always been strong-willed, and I know you can do it. Your father and I are proud of the person you've become."

Her words warmed Alex's heart, filling him with a renewed sense of determination. He knew that his parents had always supported

his dream of becoming a hunter, and he was determined to make them proud.

"Thanks, Mom," Alex said, his voice filled with gratitude. "I won't disappoint you."

After breakfast, John's infectious enthusiasm filled the room. "Big brother, you're going to be a hunter, right?" he asked, his eyes wide with excitement.

Alex ruffled John's hair affectionately. "That's the plan, little buddy. I want to become a hunter and protect our family."

John beamed with pride. "I know you'll be amazing, big brother. You will be a strong and capable hunter!"

Following breakfast, Alex left the cozy dining hall and made his way to his modest living room.

The walls were adorned with family photos, capturing moments from their past. Alex's gaze lingered on a picture of his parents, their smiles forever frozen in time

It served as a poignant reminder of the mission he had undertaken—to change their tragic fate.

Seated on his bed, Alex's thoughts turned inward. He couldn't help but wonder if, in his previous life, being a stronger hunter might have altered his family's fate. Perhaps they wouldn't have struggled so much, and his parents wouldn't have had to work long hours to make ends meet.

With a renewed determination, Alex made a silent vow to himself.

In this new life, he would become a formidable hunter, not only to protect his family but also to provide them with a better life. He was determined to ensure that his parents would no longer have to toil endlessly just to make ends meet.
