Chapter 2 - [2] First Match

The sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow over the volleyball court. For Izumi Miyamura, this was a place he had never ventured into before.

The anticipation and nervousness churned within him as he stepped onto the sandy surface, his sneakers sinking slightly with each step.

Izumi's eyes darted around, taking in the vibrant atmosphere of the court. Laughter, shouts, and the rhythmic sound of the ball echoed through the air. It was a world entirely foreign to him, and he couldn't help but feel like an outsider.

Kouhei, a friendly and encouraging presence, approached Izumi, clapping him on the back with a warm smile.

"Miyamura, you're doing great just by being here. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and this is your beginning. We're all here to learn and have fun."

Izumi nodded, appreciating Kouhei's words. He knew he had a long way to go, but he was determined to make the most of this experience.

"Alright, let's start with something basic. When the serve comes your way, try to dig it up and pass it to the setter. You're starting in the back row, so you'll be our first receiver."

As the first serve of the match was aimed at Izumi, he tensed up, his eyes locked on the incoming ball. His instincts kicked in, and he moved into position, swinging his arms to make contact. He managed to touch the ball, but it sailed off in an unexpected direction, landing wide of the intended target.

Izumi grimaced in frustration, but the players around him were quick to offer encouragement.

"Don't worry, Miyamura! No one masters this in their first try"

"Nice try, Miyamura! Keep it up!"

"Don't sweat it, we've all been there!"

"You'll get the hang of it, just keep going!"

"When receiving, try to keep your arms together and angle them slightly upward. It'll help you control the direction of the pass." Kouhei stepped closer, demonstrating the technique to control the ball's direction.

Izumi took a deep breath, his eyes focused on the ball as it sailed over the net once more. This time, he tried to follow Kouhei's advice, angling his arms and concentrating on his form.

The serve came at him, and he managed to make a cleaner pass, sending the ball toward Kohei. It wasn't perfect, but it was a step in the right direction.

"Nice one, Miyamura!"

"You're getting better!"

Words of encouragement and congratulations flew twords Izumi as successfully dig the ball. With a few pointers from Kouhei and several more attempts, Izumi gradually gained a better grasp of the basics.

Izumi was far from perfect, but he was making progress, and that was what mattered most to him.

The match continued, each point filled with intensity and energy. The two teams clashed in a fierce battle, each rally showcasing the determination and skills of the players.

As the first set of the match reached its climax, the tension on the court was palpable. The score was neck and neck, and both teams had displayed remarkable skill and determination throughout.

The players on both sides were giving their all, rallying back and forth with incredible intensity. But it was Kouhei's team that managed to seize the moment.

With a series of precise passes, expert sets, and powerful spikes, they gained the upper hand. The opposing team put up a valiant defense, but Kouhei's team's coordination and teamwork were unmatched.

"This is it, guys! Let's close the first set!" shouted Kouhei

In a pivotal moment, Kouhei received a near-perfect pass and set the ball with precision. His teammate, Hideki, soared through the air for one final, thunderous spike.

"For the set!"

With a powerful leap, Hideki soared through the air and executed a flawless spike. The ball traveled at high speed, cutting through the opponent's defenses like a bullet. It struck the court with such force that it ricocheted off the floor, almost impossible to return.

'Incredible power!' Miyamura thought watching the beautiful play, the way the spike went it mesmerised him

"Hideki's spikes are something else!"

"No way we could've stopped that!" said the middle blockers of Kouhei's team imagining a state they have to face such spikes

Izumi watched in awe as the sequence unfolded. It was a brilliant display of teamwork and skill, and he couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.

"Yes! We got the first set!" "let's Go" celebrated the team for their set win.

Kouhei and his teammates exchanged high-fives and enthusiastic shouts of victory. Izumi, who had been part of this thrilling match, couldn't help but share in their jubilation.

"That was amazing!" said Izumi while a giant grin on his face

"It's all about teamwork and determination. We did great!" replied Kouhei seeing Izumi enjoying the game

Their team secured the first set with a score of 25-23, and Izumi's elation knew no bounds.

He had been hesitant at first, unsure about stepping onto the court, but now he felt something he had never experienced before—a growing passion for volleyball.

'This... this is amazing. I want to learn more. I want to get better.'

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows on the court. As the players caught their breath and prepared for the next set, Izumi felt a sense of belonging and excitement he had never experienced before.

As the players gathered for a well-deserved break, Izumi's mind buzzed with thoughts of the game. Volleyball had entered his life unexpectedly, but it was quickly becoming a part of him, and he was eager to explore where this newfound interest would lead him.

The second set began with a renewed sense of determination. Izumi's efforts in practicing his receives during the break were beginning to pay off. He managed to get more of the serves under control, preventing some from falling to the ground, and he even got the opportunity to spike a set, scoring a point for their team.

The excitement was palpable as each team fought fiercely for dominance. Kouhei, with his precise and beautiful sets, created numerous opportunities for the spikers.

However, the opposing team's defense

proved formidable, repeatedly thwarting their attempts to bring the ball down to the opponents' court.

The most memorable play of the set occurred when the opposing team's ace managed to outmaneuver Hideki in a thrilling one-on-one encounter. It was a powerful display of skill that boosted their team's momentum.

In the end of the second set, it was a brilliantly executed set from the opposing team's setter that led to a decisive moment. The ball found its way to their ace, who once again triumphed in a one-on-one battle at the net, scoring the final point for the opposing team. The scoreboard showed a score of 21-25, signaling a loss for Izumi and Kohei's team in the second set.

Even though they had lost, the spirit of competition burned brighter within Izumi. He was fully immersed in the world of volleyball now, and the desire to improve and contribute more to his team's success drove him forward as they entered the third set.

Amid the thrilling volleys and heart-pounding rallies, conversations and tactics were exchanged with enthusiasm and determination.

On Izumi's team, the players huddled together during a timeout, strategizing for the next serve. Kohei, who had been orchestrating the team's plays brilliantly, took the lead.

"All right, guys," Kouhei began, his voice full of energy, "we've got to keep the pressure on them. Hideki, you've been amazing with your spikes. Let's keep utilizing that"

Hideki chimed in with a nod. "Kouhei's right. We've got to keep them guessing. Don't let them read our plays too easily."

The team shared words of encouragement, their determination unwavering. They broke from the huddle, ready to face the opposing team once more.

On the opposing side, their ace and setter had their own strategies. The setter, Hiroshi, looked to the ace with a determined glint in his eyes.

"Hiroshi, let's switch it up," the ace suggested. "I'll try a cross-shot to the corner on the next play."

Hiroshi nodded in agreement. "Good idea. And we'll go for a high set right after. They won't see it coming."

The opposing team executed their plan flawlessly, leaving Izumi's team momentarily stunned. However, the quick thinking and communication on both sides kept the match's intensity alive.

Amid the thrilling volleys and heart-pounding rallies, conversations and tactics were exchanged with enthusiasm and determination.

The third set escalated the intensity of the match, with both teams producing spectacular moments that left the audience in awe.

One such moment occurred when Hideki executed a power spike that tore through the opponent's defense like a bull.

"How the heck am I supposed to stop that?" one of the opposing players muttered in frustration.

"Nice kill, Hideki!" the audience cheered from the sidelines. [A/N— audience = the kids didn't get to play]

Hideki didn't stop there; he continued to score point after point, displaying his dominance on the court. However, the opponents didn't back down and retaliated with their own great plays, keeping the score tight.

With the score at 22-21 in favor of Kouhei's team, tension filled the air. The opponent's server decided to deliver a tricky serve aimed at the back row. The libero did his job by keeping the ball in play, but it rebounded toward the net. Seeing the perfect opportunity to score, Izumi instinctively jumped to spike the ball. However, mid-spike, he shifted his hand posture and set the ball toward the left corner. With all the blockers focused on him, Hideki, who had positioned himself strategically, had an easy slam to the opponent's court.

Izumi's play was something people with years of practice might struggle to achieve, and the crowd watched in disbelief.

"Are you for real?"

"Is he really playing for the first time?"

"What the heck was that set, man?",Sohei approached Izumi, patted his back, and praised him for the incredible play.

Izumi's teammates didn't take long to score the next two points, securing their victory in the match.

As the match concluded, a tired but elated Miyamura found a spot under a tree in the park to catch his breath.

The group of kids gathered around Izumi, their excitement still palpable after the intense match. They couldn't contain their chatter and enthusiasm.

"Man, that set you did near that was insane!"

"Yeah can you believe it, it was like *woosh* and *wash* and Hideki was like *Bam*"

"I can't believe that crazy set Miyamura pulled off!"

"You're a natural, Miyamura!"

Izumi scratched his head, still somewhat surprised by the compliments. "I don't know about that... I just sort of went with the flow."

Anathor kid from the group clapped him on the back again. "Well, you've got potential, that's for sure. With a little more practice, you'll be unstoppable."

Kouhei, who had been instrumental in helping Izumi improve his skills during the match, chimed in. "Yeah, Miyamura, you've got talent. If you're interested, you should think about joining a volleyball club or something."

Izumi paused, considering the idea. It was the first time he had played volleyball, and he had enjoyed it more than he expected. Maybe there was something to this sport that he hadn't realized before.

"You know what? That doesn't sound like a bad idea."

The kids cheered at his response, and they began discussing when and where they could meet up for more matches in the future. Izumi might have just stumbled into a new passion, and he was eager to explore it further.

As they continued to chat and plan their next volleyball session, the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm, golden hue over the park. Izumi couldn't help but smile, feeling a sense of belonging he hadn't experienced before.
